TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Special delivery: Breadwinners, the latest original animated comedy from Nickelodeon Studios, rises to the top-rated show for kids 2-11 in its fourth week on the air. The pun-filled, breakneck-speed show about a couple of ducks whose life’s work is to deliver bread, is one of a slew of new animated shows about to flood the Nick pipeline including Bad Seeds, Shimmer & Shine, and Pig Goat Banana Cricket. "It feels like we’ve gone back to the Renaissance days of animation," network president Cyma Zarghami told CynKids before last week’s Nick Upfront. Breadwinners topped a clean sweep for the network for K2-11.

Is a G-rated YouTube in the works? YouTube is developing a web video destination for kids 10 and under, according to The Next Web. The goal of the site is to provide free videos and advertising suitable for children that parents can trust. YouTube is already pitching the project to video producers, but no launch date has been announced yet. The Google-owned video sharing network already enables parents to filter out content inappropriate for their children, as well as a version of the site specifically tailored to schools.

Break out the popcorn. A sequel to The Incredibles, and a third installment of the Cars movie franchise are in the works from Disney, studio chief Bob Iger shared yesterday at the company’s annual shareholders meeting. The Incredibles’ superheroic family has been dormant since 2004; Cars 2 revved $560 million in global box office in 2011.

Under the sea? Sofia Coppola is reportedly negotiating to direct a live-action version of The Little Mermaid, based more on the original Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale than Disney’s animated remix. The film is for Universal Pictures and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, reports Deadline, and the studio is hoping to move quickly. Coppola until now has focused on adult-themed films, including her most recent rich-girls-seeking-attention project, The Bling Ring.

The Peanuts gang is headed back to the big screen on Nov. 6, 2015, and Blue Sky Studios yesterday whet our appetites with the film’s first teaser, in all its bright, bold CGI glory This time around, Charlie Brown, Snoopy and friends from Charles Schulz’s beloved comic are in the hands of Craig Schulz, one of Charles’ sons. The gang hasn’t been in a full-length film since 1980.

PRODUCTION NOTES

ABC Family has a few new series in the works with tween/teen appeal. Among the pilots the network greenlighted this week are Alice in Arabia, about a rebellious American teen who, after tragedy befalls her parents, is unknowingly kidnapped by her extended family, who are Saudi Arabian. Based on the popular young adult novel by Blake Nelson, the upcoming Recovery Road focuses on a teenage girl dealing with addiction. Unstrung explores the cutthroat professional world tour of tennis as brother and sister Luke and Ellie Holt compete to move up the ranks.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Coolabi Group is bringing its fantasy good-vs.-evil adventure brand Beast Quest to digital life via at new deal with digital entertainment company Miniclip. The deal will see the two parties jointly creating games based on the publishing franchise, published in the UK by Orchard Books and with more than 100 books published to date in 30 languages. First mobile game is due out in the fall for iOS and Android platforms, as well as an online version to be hosted on the Miniclip website. Miniclip has over 100 million unique users per month, with a core demographic of 7-17 year olds.

Following delivery of the first episodes of The Jungle Bunch to the Rescue!, PGS Entertainment signed sales for the series in several territories across Europe, Canada and the Middle East. Broadcasters that have acquired the series include France3 Ludo (France), Super RTL (Germany), Rai Cinema (Italy), RTS (Switzerland), Cartoon Network (Germany,  Poland and Latin America), Nickelodeon (India) and ABC (Australia). The Jungle Bunch to the Rescue! is produced by TAT Productions and Master Films, in partnership with France Televisions, Super RTL and SeaWorld.
