President Trump announced proposed budget cuts that would eliminate the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the major funder of PBS programming, and the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities. Not surprisingly, the move prompted a swift and strong response. “PBS and our nearly 350 member stations, along with our viewers, continue to remind Congress of our strong support among Republican and Democratic voters, in rural and urban areas across every region of the country,” said PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger in a statement released Thursday morning. “The cost of public broadcasting is small, only $1.35 per citizen per year, and the benefits are tangible: increasing school readiness for kids 2-8, support for teachers and homeschoolers, lifelong learning, public safety communications and civil discourse.” Patricia Harrison, CEO for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, said Trump’s budget cuts would lead to the “collapse of the public media system itself and the end of this essential national service.”
In response to reports regarding the possible defunding of the National Endowment for the Arts, Ovation recruited the support of several high-profile, non-profit arts organizations and arts leaders for its 2017 Stand for the Arts campaign to raise awareness, protect access and encourage action on behalf of arts and culture. The Coalition includes Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, American Alliance of Museums, Americans for the Arts, Arts Action Fund, Arts for LA, Arts Orange County, California Arts Advocates, Californians for the Arts, Film Independent, Ford’s Theatre Society, The LAMP, National Dance Education Organization, National Guild for Community Arts Education, National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, San Diego Regional Arts & Culture Coalition, Society of Voice Arts and Sciences, and California State Senator Ben Allen. “These organizations understand that there is power in unity and feel it is important to share stories about how the arts and creativity are absolutely indispensable,” said Liz Janneman, EVP of Network Strategy, Ovation. “With the very real threat that NEA funding will be cut or possibly eliminated, these dedicated arts advocates can help fuel the groundswell in this country that protecting the arts is essential to our economic and cultural well-being.”
For the first time, NBC’s Saturday Night Live is going live in all four time zones with its final four telecasts of the season. Things kick off with Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon as host on April 15, followed by Chris Pine (May 6), Melissa McCarthy (May 13) and Dwayne Johnson (May 20). “SNL – enjoying its most popular season in two decades – is part of the national conversation, and we thought it would be a great idea to broadcast to the west and mountain time zones live at the same time it’s being seen in the east and central time zones,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “That way, everyone is in on the joke at the same time. Kudos to Lorne Michaels, the producers and cast for making SNL one of the most relevant and anticipated shows in the zeitgeist.” Episodes will air live at 11:30p ET, 10:30p CT, 9:30p MT and 8:30p PT. For the Mountain and Pacific time zones, SNL will be repeated at 11:30p.
