Good morning. It’s Tuesday March 14, 2017 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ION: Saving Hope at 12a
Myx TV: Mom vs. Matchmaker at 8p
NBC: Trial & Error at 10p
Spike: Adam Carolla and Friends Build Stuff Live at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
ABC:  The Real O’Neals at 9:30p
NBC: This Is Us at 9p

IN THE NEWS

Tyra Banks has been named host of season 12 of NBC hit America’s Got Talent. “Tyra is the complete package: Out-of-this-world talented, funny, brilliant and all heart,” said Paul Telegdy, president, alternative and reality group, NBC Entertainment. “In whatever she has done, she has always connected with audiences around the world. Her vivacious spirit will infuse ‘AGT’ in a big way.” Banks created and exec produced America’s Top Model for 23 cycles. She replaces Nick Cannon, who announced in February he was leaving the show after he was allegedly “threatened with termination” due to jokes he told on a Showtime stand-up special.

HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver again bought ad time on Fox News’s Fox & Friends in the D.C. area, with the goal of explaining to F&F fan President Trump how much the GOP’s American Health Care Act will hurt older people in rural areas, among others, who put him in office. “It’s like if the people of Pompei voted for the volcano,” said Oliver.

Speaking of Trump and Fox News, POTUS will be interviewed by FNC’s Tucker Carlson in a segment airing Wednesday at 9p on Tucker Carlson Tonight.

The eighth and final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones will have only 6 episodes (down from 7 in upcoming season 7, launching July 16), shared showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss at SXSW. It was also revealed the pop star Ed Sheeran will guest this season. “We knew that [series star] Maisie [Williams] was a big fan of Ed Sheeran and for years we’ve been trying to get him on the show so we can surprise Maisie,” said Benioff. “This year we finally did it.”

Close to home: HGTV’s Urban Oasis Giveaway will be located in Knoxville, TN, which happens to be the headquarters of the network. A fully renovated and furnished home will be given away in a national sweepstakes held this fall. “We know what an up-and-coming metropolis truly is,” said Ron Feinbaum, GM of HGTV home promotions. “It has it all, including an urban feel infused with Southern hospitality.”

Bravo got attention at SXSW with an (almost) nude flash mob. The stunt promoted upcoming social experiment Stripped, in which participants live without material possessions, including clothes, for 21 days.

This year’s biennial Cronkite Awards for excellence in political journalism honored double winner KUSA Denver; KXAN Austin, Texas; WXIA Atlanta; WOI Des Moines, Iowa; KMGH Denver, and KCET Los Angeles. Scripps won the award for station group.

GOING GLOBAL

Among the MIPTV 2017 offerings from Studiocanal is Ride Upon the Storm. The new series from Adam Price (Borgen), inspired by biblical tales, centers on a family of priests. Produced by Denmar’s DR Drama in a co-production with ARTE France and AAM le Francais, the drama will broadcast on DR1 in the fall.

UK-based Magnify Media has sold format The Singing Bee back into Romania and Indonesia after a break of almost a decade in both territories. Antena TV is in production with primetime episodes of the format for Romania, where it first aired on Pro TV in 2008, while Indonesia’s RCTI is re-launching the show with a 30-episode run. The Indonesian version of the US format, which was originally broadcast by Indosiar, also came off air in 2008.

Armoza Formats launched singing format The Final Four, which announces the finalists in the first episode. It’s the first singing reality show to be both developed and distributed by Armoza. What’s the gimmick? “Because of its unique structure, any viewer who thinks they’re good enough to challenge one of the finalists can do so through the app at any time, involving the audience throughout the season,” said Avi Armoza, CEO of Armoza Formats.
