For the first time, news anchor rivals Jose Díaz-Balart of Noticias Telemundo and Univision NoticiasJorge Ramos will appear together for a newscast interview. The heavyweights will discuss the present and future of the Latino community, the impact of the Trump presidency, journalism, activism, and Ramos’s new book, Stranger, tonight at 6:30p on Telemundo. “This Noticias Telemundo initiative strengthens our shared commitment to the Latino community at a time when journalism has become of vital importance for us,” said Díaz-Balart. Added Ramos of the conversation, “We’ve owed it to each other for the last 30 years.” 
 
Netflix gave a 10-episode order to a talk show from Saturday Night Live alum Norm Macdonald. Exec produced by Macdonald with David Letterman in an advisory role, Norm Macdonald Has a Show will, like Macdonald’s YouTube series, feature sidekick Adam Eget.
 
ABC postponed indefinitely an episode of black-ish over creative differences with creator Kenya Barris. “Neither ABC nor I were happy with the direction of the episode and mutually agreed not to air it,” said Barris. The episode, which was supposed to air February 27, covered political and social issues like the rights of athletes to kneel during the national anthem. Said an ABC spokesman, “One of the things that has always made black-ish so special is how it deftly examines delicate social issues in a way that simultaneously entertains and educates. However, on this episode there were creative differences we were unable to resolve.”
 
Season 4 of The Librarians was its last on TNT – but the drama might not have checked out permanently. “I will immediately begin the process of trying to move the show elsewhere,” tweeted EP Dean Devlin after the cancellation news broke. “Please keep your fingers crossed for us!”
 
Univision laid off 20 employees last week. “As the media industry rapidly evolves, we are focused on continuing to transform UCI for the future,” said a spokesperson on Friday. “As part of this process, we have recently taken steps to realign parts of our operations and reallocate resources to invest in growth that will best serve our audiences, community and partners.” Univision also last week canceled plans for an IPO, replaced its CFO and announced that CEO Randy Falco will retire.
 
During a political rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday night, President Trump called Meet the Press host Chuck Todd “sleepy eyes Chuck Todd. He’s a sleeping son of a bitch, I’ll tell you.” The dig came as Trump referenced a 1999 Meet the Press appearance during which he talked about North Korea. Tweeted Todd afterward, “Don’t miss @MeetThePress tomorrow! I know folks may be tired in the morning due to springing forward, so set those clocks and DVRs now before your eyes get too sleepy.”
 
Raycom Media’s National Investigative Team is making an impression – its “Licensed to Pill” story, focused on the nation’s top opioid prescriber, led federal agents to raid the offender’s Tennessee office. “One law enforcement officer told us that our data analysis gave him a new roadmap to investigate doctors,” said Director of Investigations Lee Zurik.

SEEN AT SXSW
 
Starz set the mood for upcoming series Vida and Sweetbitter, launching May 6, at SXSW. In addition to trailers (and lots of other food and drink), the Starz Sensory House served Spanish tapas for Vida, focused on Mexican-American sisters, and alcohol-inspired Sugarfina candy (champagne gummy bears, anyone?) for restaurant-set Sweetbitter.
 
GirlsLena Dunham told an SXSW audience that she sometimes felt “vitriol and anger” coming from some women with body types similar to hers during the 6-season run of her HBO series. “There was this energy of, ‘How dare you think it’s appropriate to take your clothing off on television and expose all of our secrets?’” Dunham told Glamor Magazine EIC Samantha Barry during a discussion about authenticity in the media.
 
During a panel on Showtime drama The Chi, series creator Lena Waithe said under new showrunner Ayanna Floyd Davis, season 2 will be “blacker and more authentic.” Fellow EP Common noted the importance of representation on TV.  “Storytelling brings down walls of racism,” he said. “The Chi shows the humanity of black people.”
 
 
COMING UP
 
Syfy is promoting original Superman prequel series Krypton and the 1000th issue of Action Comics with a live trivia challenge, taking place on Syfy Wire nightly at 8p beginning March 12. The initiative leads into Krypton’s premiere on Wednesday, March 21 at 10p. Each night, host Tiffany Smith and guests from the comic book world will incorporate lore from Krypton, Superman and the larger DC canon; fans will have a few seconds to respond to multiple choice questions as they compete for the nightly $1,000 cash prize.

Who was your first mentor?
My first mentor was my mom. She went back to work when I was in elementary school, changed careers, from furniture design (pre-kids) to fundraising (post-kids) in education. P.S.—her chair design, the R24, was featured throughout the Time/Life offices just like Charles Eames! She ended her career helping form the foundation for CornellTech. Nowadays I look at Dale Hopkins, the CEO of In Demand, who was my boss at G4, and Dawn Callahan, my current boss at Boingo. Dawn lets us do our best work every day and brings out the best in people. She’s a rock star. 
 How much of a difference do mentors make to a career?
Mentors are very important. I wish I had one earlier in my career. I am not sure how you find one, but when you do you should hold on tight and glean the most you can from their wisdom. 
 What is the most important thing a mentor can do for someone?
A mentor can help you see things differently, elevate your game or simply provide the support to lift you up and propel your career to new heights.
 
Season 3 of E!’s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry is underway. 44 Blue co-founder and president Stephanie Drachkovitch talks about what’s different this time around, and the “challenge” Medium faces that any show would be so lucky to have, in the new Cynsiders.
 
 
UPFRONTS UPDATE
 
Guests at Ovation’s NYC Upfront event on March 8 were warmed up with a wine-tasting (later, The Wine Show’s Joe Fattorini gave a “90 second course on how to become a wine expert”), before EVP of Network Strategy, Liz Janneman, provided an overview of Ovation’s “Power of Art” branding, as well as an introduction to Ovation’s travel/adventure advertiser-supported TV Everywhere app JOURNY. Geared toward millennial viewers, JOURNY is currently available on Xumo and Roku, with additional digital platforms launches scheduled in the coming months. 
 
On the programming front, season 2 of Canadian drama X Company debuts May 7. Warren Brown was on the panel and relayed stories of how he went from two-time Thai boxing champion to actor. VersaillesGeorge Blagden, who plays King Louis XIV, was on hand to talk about the extraordinary experience of shooting scenes on location at the Chateau de Versailles (the third and final season premieres October 6), and Julia Stiles talked about her lead role in the drama Riviera, which will premiere on Ovation in February 2019.

Facebook nabbed exclusive national video rights to 25 weekday afternoon Major League Baseball games, to stream on Facebook Watch this summer. The games, starting April 4, will include “in-game production elements specially designed for intuitively watching, sharing and interacting on Facebook,” per MLB.
 
Facebook Watch also announced The Tattoo Shop, premiering Thursday, March 15. Interactive docu-series follows tattoo artists Ami James (Miami Ink, NY Ink), Chris Nunez (Ink Master, Miami Ink), Chris Garver (Miami Ink), Darren Brass (Miami Ink) and Tommy Montoya (NY Ink), as they open a new tattoo shop in Miami.
 
Snapchat and Instagram yanked their Giphy GIF sticker feature after a racist GIF appeared as an option. “This type of content has no place on Instagram,” said an Instagram spokesperson. “We have stopped our integration with Giphy as they investigate the issue.” Instagram just added Giphy in late January; Snapchat added it last month.
 
 
ADVERTISING
 
The 2017 NCAA March Madness tournament delivered $1.29 billion in national TV ads, according Kantar Media, second to the  $1.55 billion collected for the NFL post season. The NBA playoffs ranked third, raking in $934 million. 2018 March Madness starts this week.
 
When it comes to the brand preferences of cable news viewers, CNN fans like BMWs, MSNBC viewers are split between Jeeps and Cadillacs, and Fox News viewers go for GMC trucks and Chevys. At least, that’s what marketers think, according to ad spend data from TS Kelly, SVP research for TV data company Alphonso. As for overall ad spend in February, Otezla topped CNN’s list, Smile Direct Club spent the most money on MSNBC and Nutrisystem dominated the Fox News chart.

Christopher Abbott (The Sinner) will play the lead in Hulu limited series Catch-22….Jeremy Sisto (Law & Order) is back in business with Dick Wolf. The actor will star opposite Zeeko Zaki in Wolf’s upcoming F.B.I. for CBS….Parenthood alum Lyndon Smith has replaced Joey King as the lead in CW supernatural cop drama pilot Dead Inside.
 
Freeform rounded out the cast for drama pilot Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. Joining PLL stars Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish in the spinoff are Sydney Park (The Walking Dead) and Kelly Rutherford (Gossip Girl).
 
Marc Blucas (Undergound) won a series regular role on ABC drama pilot The Fix….Eric Balfour and Dorian Missick (Haven), Gerard Celasco (Moneyball) and Zoe Robins (The Shannara Chronicles) join ABC drama pilot The Finest as series regulars….Brian Stokes Mitchell (Mr. Robot) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Claws) are onboard CBS comedy pilot Fam as series regulars.

Slime-y move: Nickelodeon is teaming with IMAX Corporation to bring SlimeZone, the network’s first multi-player social virtual reality experience, to IMAX VR Centres. Created in the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, SlimeZone allows up to six players to step inside the Nickelodeon virtual world, play games, watch cartoons and slime friend​s. “This new VR experience will also show the creative community how we are using technology to create unique forms of entertainment for all ages,” said Cyma Zarghami, president, Nickelodeon Group.
