IN THE NEWS

James Corden celebrates one year on CBS with The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special, featuring a new Karaoke with Jennifer Lopez as well as highlights from past segments, on Tuesday, March 29 at 10p. “We are so excited to be doing this show in primetime on CBS,” said Ben Winston, the late nighter’s EVP. CBS is likely excited, too Corden’s show holds the YouTube record for the most watched late night clip with “Adele Carpool Karaoke,” which has 84 million views.

Digital sports media content company Whistle Sports announced a Series C with funding from TEGNA, NBC Sports Ventures, Sky and Emil Capital. What makes this a good team? “Each of these companies share our commitment to engaging young millennial fans with compelling content in all the places that audience chooses to spend its time,” Whistle Sports EVP Brian Selander tells Cynopsis. “They also understand completely how an active and rapidly growing community of sports fans and followers is a source of strength and support for all the brands that want to reach those fans and for all the companies that are turning to us to create original content for them.”  The Whistle Sports community of sports fans and followers recently topped 170 million aggregate reach across all social channels, growing by more than two million a week.

Former NFL linebacker Dhani Jones and one-time pro soccer player Kyle Martino have been named hosts of NBC’s Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge. Evan Dollard and MJ Costa are course reporters. The competition from American Ninja Warrior producers Arthur Smith and Kent Weed has teams test their endurance on specially designed obstacle courses.

Yahoo is taking aim at cord-cutting sports fans with a National Hockey League partnership that will deliver live, out-of-market NHL games for free. "This alliance brings us one step closer to providing fans a live professional sporting event every day, on Yahoo, completely frictionless and for free – no cable subscription or authentification required,”said Phil Lynch, VP, media partnerships at Yahoo. In addition to pacts with MLB and NBC Sports, Yahoo also recently struck a deal with the PGA Tour.

Starz picked up distribution rights to thriller Careful What You Wish For. The film starring Nick Jonas hits theaters in June, followed by a VOD release.

Travel Channel gave the go-ahead for 26, season four episodes of Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations. During season three, the series is delivering its highest ratings to date with 21 percent growth among viewers P25-54.

Barry Schindel (Castle) will serve as exec producer and showrunner on CBS drama pilot Training Day, a reboot of the 2001 feature film.

Entertainment One struck an overall first-look deal with reality television producer Chris Deaux. Under the pact, Deaux will develop and produce unscripted programming with eOne through his Two Fifteen West.

COMING UP

You can hear the late Joe Alaskey’s final voice recording on the season 3 finale of ID’s Murder Comes to Town on Monday, March 14 at 8p. The Emmy winner was best known for succeeding Mel Blanc as the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other characters from Warner Bros. cartoons. Joe had been the narrator of Murder Comes to Town for all three seasons since 2014, and recorded the third season finale on Friday, January 29. He passed away on February 3 at age 63, after battling cancer.

Cartoon Network’s revival of The Powerpuff Girls premieres Monday, April 4 at 6p and runs weeknights at 6p through April 15, until setting into its regular Thursday timeslot. Superhero series originally launched in 1996, and was made into a 2002 feature film.

NBC Universo premieres one-hour special Don Omar Desde Vina 2016 on Saturday, March 12 at 30. Performance by the urban artist comes from Latin America’s longest-running music festival.

CNN will partner with TV ONE to host the CNN-TV ONE Ohio Democratic Presidential Town Hall on Sunday, March 13 at 8p, two days before five states hold primary contests. Roland S. Martin (News One Now) and CNN’s Jake Tapper host from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, live on CNN and TV ONE. Two-hour event focusing on issues facing black America will also be simulcast on Urban Adult Contemporary Radio One stations in each of its 15 urban markets and live-streamed online and across mobile devices via CNNgo.

The eighth and final season of USA’s Royal Pains launches Wednesday, May 18 at 10p. The show, which crosses the 100th episode milestone midway through the season, isn’t coasting: before sign-off the series will visit Hong Kong and air a musical episode.

Season two of MTV’s Scream will start making noise Tuesday, May 31. Newcomers include Kiana Lede and Santiago Segura.

WE tv dating show Driven to Love premieres Friday, April 1 at 10p. Host Ray J cruises around town in an SUV helping singles meet potential mates. Series from Lion Television is based on a format created by Matar Productions and Zig Zag Productions.

Small businesses have a chance to make it big in CNBC’s Billion Dollar Buyer, launching Tuesday, March 22 at 10p. With a supply spend of $2 billion, hospitality mogul Tilman J. Fertitta scouts for entrepreneurs that can bolster his empire with products for his high-end properties.

ADVERTISING AND AGENCIES

Publicis Media is restructuring, with Starcom and Zenith splitting from Mediavest and Optimedia, respectively, and operating as standalone global brands. Mediavest and Spark join to form a third global unit, while Optimedia and Blue 449 form a “challenger brand.”  SMG, ZO and Vivaki are being retired. An impending reorg was announced in December.

UPFRONTS UPDATE

ION Television launched a multifaceted national B2B campaign, called “The ION Blend,” to highlight a combination of advertiser value, program quality, and audience reach and insights. “Like your favorite cup of coffee, ION Television offers a mix of quality, consistency and value,” said Chris Addeo, SVP, Marketing & Promotions, ION Media Networks, who oversees the initiative. “We work very hard year-round to exceed our advertisers’ expectations on multiple fronts, and that has allowed us to increasingly become an essential part of their media plans.”

The campaign features targeted digital and print advertising, as well as outdoor throughout New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Detroit. And hold off on the pizza run – for the fifth consecutive year, the net will hold its “ION Delivers” lunch program, sending lunch to key agencies in those five cities over a five-day period.

The “ION Blend” campaign media buy runs through May 31.

SOCIAL GOOD

Nickelodeon International’s “Together For Good” and UNICEF are teaming to educate and inspire kids to tackle discrimination and inequality. The partnership officially kicks off with a PSA featuring UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Katy Perry, which will premiere on Nickelodeon channels internationally during tomorrow night’s 2016 Kids’ Choice Awards.

CASTING

Poppy Montgomery (Unforgettable) will play the lead in CBS comedy pilot Furst Born, centered on a successful doctor and mother who learns she’s adopted. Swoosie Kurtz, fresh off canceled Mike & Molly, plays her mum mom. Montgomery also starred in CBS’s Without a Trace and Unforgettable (later on A&E).

Craig Ferguson (Celebrity Name Game) will star in NBC pilot Crunch Time, a game show/comedy hybrid that also includes Kyle Howard (Royal Pains) and Kelly Stewart (The Soul Man).

Nikki DeLoach (Awkward) landed a series regular role in ABC murder trial drama pilot The Jury, opposite Jeremy Sisto, Archie Panjabi and Kevin Rankin.

Fox event series Shots Fired added Tristan Wilds (The Wire) and Aisha Hinds (True Blood) as series regulars.

Matt Passmore (Satisfaction) has been cast as the lead in CW‘s paranormal pilot Satisfaction from Kevin Williamson. He replaces Bailey Chase in the role.

NBC pilot Marlon added former Late Night writer Diallo Riddle to the cast. Comedy is inspired by the life of Marlon Wayans.

RTE signed deals for RTE One doc 1916 to BBC for BBC Four UK, SBS Australia, TF1 Histoire France, TVE Spain and DR Denmark. The three-parter about the East Rising in Dublin, narrated by Liam Neeson, has also been licensed by 120 PBS stations in the U.S., as well as Aer Lingus.

FremantleMedia International acquired international distribution rights for feature documentary Serena, about tennis star Serena Williams, from Film45.

UK’s Channel 5 commissioned two-part special Penguin A&E, from Remedy Productions, following efforts to save the lives of Africa’s endangered penguins.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Turner Sports and Snapchat inked a multi-year content deal employing Snapchat’s Live Story product for coverage of major sporting events including NCAA Championships, starting with March Madness. Snapchatters wll be able to contribute their perspectives through video and photo Snaps to one collective Story, and have access to a variety of official brand marks, imagery and behind-the-scenes Snaps. Snapchat curates the submitted Snaps into a brief video that can be broadcast globally. Brands can get in the game with products including full-screen, vertical video 3V ads interspersed throughout the user-submitted content.

A+E Networks added 4,300 of its library episodes to A&E and History Watch Apps.With a reduced ad load, to date the enhancements have garnered 40 percent growth in video views and 114 percent growth in authentication rate.

RATINGS

Wednesday’s Democratic debate on Univision drew 2.01 million viewers and 966,000 among A25-54. CNN, simulcasting the event, attracted 3.94 million viewers and 1.34 in the news demo. Fox News, which counter-programmed with GOP candidate interviews, averaged 2.9 million viewers and 590,000 among A25-54 from 8p-11p. CNN’s average in the time period was 3.2 million/1.1 million.

The premiere of WGN America’s Underground delivered 2.5 million viewers across four airings Wednesday, the net’s most-watched original series launch in same day viewing. The 10p airing clocked 1.4 million viewers.

CBS’s Victoria’s Secret Swim Special drew a .7/3 rating among A18-49 on Wednesday, down 30 percent versus last year, and dipped over a million in total viewers, to 2.05.

The season two finale of ABC’s American Crime grew over the prior week by 16 percent in total viewers (to 3.7 million) and 13 percent in A18-49 (to .9/3), for its most-watched telecast in 5 weeks and matching a 7-week high among young adults.

The premiere of Destination America’s Paranormal Lockdown was watched by 816,000 unique viewers P2+, the highest-rated series premiere ever in net history in key demos, including HH (.67), P2+ (.36), P25-54 (.45) and W25-54 (.51) in Live+3.

Ellen’s Design Challenge finished its second season on HGTV with more than 10.7 million viewers tuning in since its January 18 premiere. Ratings among viewers P25-54 grew nearly 20 percent over the prior 13 week average, making it a top-rated program on HGTV in the demo.

Science Channel’s What on Earth? wrapped its second season on March 1 as the net’s most watched series of all time with a season average of 794,000 total viewers P2+ in L+3.The series debut on January 26 averaged 780,000 total viewers, growing to 832,000 for the finale, one of Science’s Top 15 most watched telecasts of all time (#13). It also tied for a series high rating among P25-54 and M25-54.

Fox Business Network had its first 8a-8p sweep in the news demo on Tuesday, with 35,000 viewers versus 22,000 for CNBC. In total viewers, CNBC drew 163,000 viewers to FBN’s 111,000.
