IN THE NEWS

Break out those umbrellas because Sharknado 4 will hit in July. Syfy and The Asylum announced today that Ian Ziering will slay again in the newest installment, reprising his role as shark-fighting hero Fin Shepard, while Tara Reid is set to return as April Wexler to reveal the outcome of the fan-voted #AprilLives or #AprilDies social campaign. The fourth addition will also see the return of David Hasselhoff as Gil Shepard and Ryan Newman as Claudia Shepard. The new movie whips up adventure five years after the East Coast was ravaged, and where Fin, his family and the cosmos have been living blissfully sharknado-free. Cast also includes Gary Busey, Tommy Davidson, Imani Hakim, Cody Linley, Masiela Lusha and Cheryl Tiegs. Anthony C. Ferrante returns to direct an original screenplay written by Thunder Levin.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

More of those seventies shows are hitting the small screen. FX ordered a first installment of Trust, about the life of John Paul Getty III, heir to the great American fortune, which opens when the then 16-year-old was kidnapped in 1973 and his family declined to pay the ransom.

Freeform began production this week in London on new original series Guilt. The drama is a co-production of Sea to Sky Entertainment, Lionsgate Television’s Canadian joint venture with Thunderbird Films, and BV Family Productions. Ensemble cast includes Billy Zane (Titanic), Emily Tremaine (Vinyl), Daisy Head (The Syndicate), Cristian Solmeno (Rush), Naomi Ryan (Guardians of the Galaxy), Kevin Ryan (Copper), Zachary Fall (Crossing Lines), Simona Brown (The Casual Vacancy) and newcomer Sam Cassidy.

PBS greenlit a second season of original drama Mercy Street, from Scott Free. The network said the show drew 3.3 million viewers in its unveiling on January 17, following an episode of Downton Abbey’s final season. The first season of Mercy Street took place in the spring of 1862 in Alexandria, VA, the longest-occupied Confederate city of the Civil War, which was governed under martial law. Season 2 will explore the city’s growing chaos.

Love Nature and Smithsonian Earth are partnering with Plimsoll Productions to launch a natural history project, Camp Zambia, 50 hours of 4K wildlife and nature programs over the next two years from a new production facility in Africa. Content will range from footage of animal behavior to character-led series, showcasing the breadth of African wildlife, for Love Nature’s Canadian and international SVOD and TV offerings and Smithsonian Networks’ streaming service.
