Good morning. It’s Friday, March 7, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBC Olympics crunched the numbers for its TV Everywhere data from the 2014 Winter Games, with 225 multichannel distributors offering verification for their customers. Overall, 4.8 million devices were successfully verified with a 54% success rate, a 50% improvement from a 36% success rate during the 2012 London Games. NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports Live Extra app saw 24.6 million video viewers for an 8% rise over the 2012 Olympics. In addition, there were 14 million video on demand transactions from over 3.3M unique set-top-box’s, with over 30 million advertising & promotion impressions via Dynamic Ad Insertion, according to the company.

ON THE AIR

FOX Sports 1 continues to beef up content, locking in a deal with Street League Skateboarding for a new multi-year partnership that includes live broadcasts of the skateboarding contest series on FOX Sports 1 as well as global distribution through the FOX family of networks. The 2014 SLS World Tour includes nationwide stops with dates and locations to be announced soon and features 22 top street skaters in the world.

Speaking of new deals, MSG Networks and Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls agreed to a new multi-year extension that continues to keep MSG Networks as the regional television home of the club. MSG Networks will telecast 22 of the Red Bulls’ 34 regular season games this season, including pregame and postgame coverage. The action kicks off on Saturday, March 8 at 7:30p vs. Vancouver. Steve Cangialosi will mark his seventh season as the team’s play-by-play announcer and 13th season covering the Red Bulls, while Shep Messing starts his 14th season as game analyst.

MLS team the Columbus Crew has found a new home however. The club reached a new multi-year agreement with Time Warner Cable SportsChannel to become the television home of the Black & Gold. The deal features enhanced pre and post-match coverage for all Crew matches, with Time Warner Cable SportsChannel becoming the dedicated home for all non-nationally televised MLS contests. Overall, Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will carry 33 of the Crew’s 34 2014 MLS regular-season contests.

Rounding out the soccer programming news, Univision finalized its coverage of the 2014 MLS regular season, and will now carry 16 additional games to be aired on Univision Deportes Network. That brings the total number of matches on the Univision MLS broadcast schedule to 44 for its family of networks, the most regular-season games by any network in the US. Ten games on UDN and 18 on UniMas had been previously announced.

On to ratings… Golf Channel and NBC are on the upswing following the PGA Tour’s Florida event last week at The Honda Classic. NBC saw its final round coverage of The Honda Classic on Sunday deliver a 2.6 household score, according to Nielsen, with 3.88 million viewers. That marks the second most-watched round at The Honda Classic since 2002. Golf Channel’s final round lead-in coverage on Sunday recorded a 1.3 million viewers (up 38% over 2012), making it the most-watched lead-in coverage since the WGC-Cadillac Championship last year.

ESPN International’s coverage of the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship Final Four from North Texas will feature Jay Bilas, Dan Shulman and Dick Vitale handling microphone duties. Commentator assignments for the three-game Final Four include: Shulman (play-by-play) and Vitale (analyst) for National Semifinal #1, Shulman (play-by-play) and Bilas (analyst) for National Semifinal #2 and Shulman (play-by-play)  and Vitale (analyst) for the National Championship. National Semifinal action will take place Saturday, April 5 at 6p, while the National Championship will be held Monday, April 7 at 9p.

ESPN announced that Draft Academy, a new four-week series spotlighting top NFL Draft prospects, debuts Tuesday, April 22, at 10p, with an eye toward capturing behind-the-scenes moments on and off the field. Hour-long-hour episodes will air on Tuesdays at 10p on ESPN.

Deportes Telemundo locked in Mexican soccer legend Carlos Hermosillo to its on-camera roster, where he will serve as a commentator. His debut in that role will take place on March 22 at 10p when Leon faces Cruz Azul.

NFL Media announced its free agency plans, offering 30 hosts, analysts and reporters for 24 hours of live free agency coverage over three days and NFL.com’s Free Agency Tracker, NFL Network, NFL.com and NFL Mobile from Verizon. NFL Network’s coverage begins March 10 at 8p with NFL Total Access: Free Agency Frenzy Preview and continues on Tuesday and Wed. with 10-hour editions of Free Agency Frenzy starting at 10a.
 
CBS Sports Network takes on Championship Week with action from the Mountain West, Atlantic 10, Conference USA and Patriot League tournaments, as well as live studio programming leading up to Selection Sunday. Coverage tips off with the Patriot League Championship Men’s Basketball Semifinals on Saturday, March 8 pitting Army and Boston University at 3:30p. Mountain West action begins on Thursday, March 13 with the quarterfinals starting at 3p, while Conference USA action begins with the semifinals on March 14 at 4p and the Atlantic-10 tips off on March 15 at 1:30p.

For the second consecutive year, NBC Sports Group will deliver more than six-hours of live coverage of the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship, with coverage of the Conference Championship and semifinal rounds on NBCSN and will also be streamed live on NBC Sports Live Extra. The action tips off on Sunday at 2:30p. Mike Corey will manage play-by-play for all games and will be joined by analyst Ron Thompson.

BTN is gearing up for March Madness with a 2013 Tournament Rewind next Monday through Wednesday, showcasing replays of last season’s most exciting NCAA Tournament games. Coverage begins at 7p on Monday with a replay of Ohio State’s Sweet 16 victory over Arizona.

MSG Networks’ Hockey Night Live! hits the road this week for the first time ever with a special presentation from Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday, March 8 at 9:30p on MSG+. Host Al Trautwig joins analysts Ken Daneyko, EJ Hradek and Dave Maloney immediately following coverage of the Devils/Hurricanes game for the latest highlights, news and information from around the NHL.

Major League Soccer formally unveiled its new marketing campaign, "For Club and Country." The campaign will include multiple creative elements, television spots, digital advertising, social content and storytelling that will be rolled out throughout the MLS season. The tagline is designed to let soccer fans know that they can watch many of the American and international stars of this summer’s FIFA World Cup play in Major League Soccer heading into the tournament and will be supported by all five of MLS’ national broadcast partners: ESPN, NBC Sports, Univision, TSN and RDS, as well as all regional MLS broadcast partners. MLS’ first nationally televised game will take place Saturday at 3p with Sporting Kansas City/Seattle Sounders FC.

In addition, MLS announced a multi-year sponsorship deal with Capri Sun and Kraft Foods. The agreement will see Capri Sun become the official juice drink of MLS. Other participating Kraft brands include Kool-Aid, Country Time Lemonade and Tang, which will activate in stores nationwide.

Festivities for the 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four in Nashville will see some familiar faces, with the NCAA announcing that former "Voice" contestants Cassadee Pope and Danielle Bradbery will perform a free concert as part of the event. The concert is set to take place at 4:30p on April 8 in the Music City Center.

SOCIAL MEDIA

The IOC released data after tracking social media activity on the Olympic Athlete’s Hub, the organization’s social media platform. Overall, more than 2 million new fans joined the Olympic Facebook page while the Olympic Twitter account drew 168,101 new followers and their Instagram account saw 150,000 new followers. The US ranked as the most active team participating in social media activity, logging 22,598 posts through the three social media platforms. Top hashtags included #sochi2014, #wearewinter, #teamusa, #goaus and #wirfuerD.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

Campus Insiders is adding some new spice to its basketball coverage, announcing that-for the first time-they will utilize their Heaven Cam this week for select men’s basketball matchups from the WCC Men’s Basketball Tournament. Games will include #3 San Francisco vs. #6 San Diego on Saturday afternoon as well as the #2 BYU game later that evening.

Yahoo locked in famed soccer manager Jose Mourinho as its Global Football Ambassador for 2014. The deal will see Mourinho offer commentary on worldwide football coverage throughout the year and including the FIFA World Cup, along with photos and video.

ROSTER MOVES

FOX Deportes named Carlos Sanchez as the channel’s new Executive Vice President and General Manager. Sanchez joins the company after serving at Telemundo WNJU-TV in New York, where he was President and General Manager.

Brian Matthews was tapped as the NFL’s Senior Vice President of Media Sales where he will be charged with leveraging NFL media assets and leading both NFL Network and NFL Digital sales, pricing and inventory. Matthews previously served as senior vice president of sales for NBC News Digital.
