CYNOPSISKIDS!
03.06.14 Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea is known for engaging in some pretty transformative moves on stage. But he has not yet transformed himself into a milk-pilfering cat. Until now. The musician guest-vocals on a new episode of Disney Junior’s Sheriff Callie’s Wild West titled "The Pie Thief," airing Friday at 9a. In the ep, Flea’s Milk Bandit feline alter ego swaggers into town while the good sheriff and deputy are away chasing a fictitious trouble maker. Will the Milk Bandit be wearing more than a sock? We’ll just have to tune in and find out.
Credit a crowdfunding campaign for the possible appearance at a store near you of a Barbie-like doll based on the average measurements of a 19-year-old woman. Since artist/researcher Nickolay Lamm 3D-printed a playmate with the more realistic body type last July, there’s been a growing movement to make the doll, called "Lammily," a commercial reality. Lamm hopes to raise $95,000 and be able to produce at least 5,000 dolls that "promote realistic beauty standards," according to his YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfQu8pq0kok), which proclaims, "Average is Beautiful." Former Mattel VP of manufacturing Robert Rambeau reportedly is helping Lamm find quality manufacturers to do the job.
Would Hannah from Girls hang out with the likes of Archie, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead? Apparently so. Lena Dunham, the creator and star of the HBO series, is penning a four-issue story for Archie Comics that will bow in 2015. Mums the word on the story line, but the deal was sealed by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee), who just became chief creative officer of Archie Comics as part of the plan to modernize the comic while maintaining its classic Riverdale vibe. King Features Syndicate is leading a new licensing strategy for Betty and Veronica, and live-action film is in the works at Warner Bros.
Rihanna isn’t the only big music name to be connected to a kids flick this spring. Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars are on board both for the soundtrack and to voice characters in Rio 2, the sequel to Blue Sky Studios’ 2011 animated film that bows in theaters April 11. Monae will voice a veterinarian in the movie, while Mars will voice Roberto, a childhood friend of protagonist Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway). Both artists also have tracks on the Rio 2 soundtrack: Monae’s new tropical-themed single, What is Love, and Mars’ infectious Welcome Back.

Walt Disney Studios is partnering with screenwriting database The Black List to help bolster its Feature Writers Program. The Black List will produce over the next two months a short list of writing submissions for the studio, and Disney then will be able to select writers with diverse perspectives for its in-house Feature Writers Program. Submissions are being accepted as of yesterday, and more information can be found at www.blklist.com. The Disney partnership is Black List’s second studio alignment. The company last July teamed with Warner Bros. on a similar venture.

Facebook said it will block access to posts regarding gun sales and trades from minors 18 and under. The move is part of collective policy changes to make it harder for people to illegally sell and trade guns on Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, any time Facebook receives a report about a post promoting the private sale of regulated goods such as guns, the social network would send a message to that user reminding him or her to comply with laws and regulations. The policy change comes amid growing pressure from gun control groups and politicians; 225,000 people have signed a petition asking for a crackdown on the illegal sale of guns via these services.
