CYNOPSISDIGITAL
03.05.15 Good morning. It’s Thursday March 5, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Just after executive producing Oscar-nominated documentary Virunga with Netflix, Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with the streaming service again for a new slate of environmental docs. DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company will have a multi-year first-look deal that covers original docs and docu-series as well as acquisitions. Netflix dished out $12 million for Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation earlier this week.
HBO’s a la carte streaming service will be called HBO Now, and will cost $15 per month. The Verge reports that the premium cable network plans to roll it out in early April, with Apple as a potential launch partner. Still not decided is if the stand-alone app will include the same full access to its programming as the HBO Go TV everywhere app.
Speaking of SVOD services…NBCUniversal will take a cue from the online success of Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, and launch its own comedy-themed SVOD later this year. The Wall Street Journal reports NBCU will produce original series and provide exclusive content from its roster of TV talent at a price tag of $2.50-$3.50 a month.
Multi-platform digital company Collective Digital Studio signed beauty and lifestyle influencer Meredith Foster, the creator and star of StilaBabe09 channel on YouTube (3.2 million subscribers, more than 227 million+ views). In the last year, Foster was featured in the web series BFFs of Beauty, which is a partnership between Olay and Teen Vogue. CDS’ network of beauty gurus includes Weylie Hoang, Lauren Curtis and Blair and Elle Fowler.
Fine Brothers Entertainment, the production company behind the React comedy series, has expanded with a new alternative TV division headed up by former Big Brother producer Brandie Tucker as Vice President of Alternative Television. The Fine Brothers’ multichannel YT collection boasts 15 million subscribers and 150 million monthly views. React was picked up by Nickelodeon and aired last December as ReactToThat.
Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce company known for the largest IPO ever, bought an 8.8 percent stake in Chinese film and TV company Enlight Media for $380 million. Alibaba spent $3 billion in the entertainment industry last year to broaden its reach from online sales to video streaming sites, sports, film production, and video games.
Fox Digital Studio will premiere feature film Tenured at the 14th annual Tribeca Film Festival from April 15-26 in New York City. Movie stars Gil Zabarsky, Kathleen Littlefield (The Slap) and Kate Flannery (The Office), and is based on the short Teacher of the Year, which was optioned by FDS as a full-length film after it was slated in Tribeca’s shorts program in 2012.
Telemundo and NBC Universo launched health platform Prevenir Es Vivir (Prevention is Life) that consists of PSAs, health segments and specials on Telemundo news programs, collaborations with health associations and a dedicated digital destination. Available in English and in Spanish at PreventionisLife.com and PreveniresVivir.com, AARP, the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association will distribute wellness information, videos and local health fairs online.

ADVERTISING + AD PLATFORMS
Nielsen bought data-management technology platform and exchange eXelate for an estimated $200 million. "This acquisition creates tremendous opportunity for Nielsen in the programmatic media ecosystem," Nielsen’s Global President Steve Hasker said. New York-based eXelate was founded in Israel in 2007, and was one of the last independent DMPs; competitor BlueKai was bought by Oracle in February.
Integral Ad Science acquired video analytics company Veenome yesterday. Veenome’s tech gives “in-stream” quality of video content, audio status, auto-play, and location of the player on a page. “The industry is waking up to the fact that as powerful as targeting the right audience can be, it’s a waste of money if the targeting is on low-quality media,” Integral CEO and President Scott Knoll told Cynopsis. “The current discussion on whether ads are viewable or not is missing that media quality encompasses many other critical components such as the context of the video content, size of the video, number of videos on a page and whether the sound was on or off.”
Fusion formed the new agency Fearless to assist socially conscious corporations, foundations and non-profits to develop campaigns for its millennial audience. Among Fearless’ first partners are Live Earth, a global series of concerts to benefit climate change causes, and The California Endowment. “Although millennials are more interested in doing good, they aren’t motivated by the same old dry boring, righteous approach,” Fearless co-founder Alex Bogusky said. “Mashing up agency and media solves a huge problem for socially-minded clients who have incredibly compelling messages but no way to find their audience.”
