Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 5, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Look for a clear nod to the growing diversity of kids’ viewing experiences when Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man returns to Disney XD for season 3. "The third season is incredibly innovative in terms of format and animation technique," Cort Lane, Marvel VP animation development and partnerships, tells CynKids exclusively. "And it’s incredibly flexible from a programming and promotional standpoint." The team has been assessing questions such as, "How do we structure a series like this as a full season to air on a channel but also for audiences viewing it in SVOD? And how can we make it work in smaller chunks and for binge viewing?" Lane says. "You need a very flexible creative structure." Though no release date has been set for the season premiere, and it’s still months away, Lane confirmed it will launch with two cross-over eps with DXD’s Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and teases, "Both fans and audiences and folks in animation biz will be surprised."

The nabi tablet and accessories products will be on display at the Radio Disney Music Awards thanks to a sponsorship by nabi manufacturer Fuhu that includes a pre-show Listening Lounge open to the public free of charge and stocked with nabi headphones and other products in the portfolio. Fuhu is also sponsoring the awards show and the seven-city RDMA tour. The sponsorship comes on the heels of a major sponsorship deal with NASCAR driver Landon Cassill. 

Disney and Dish are giving peace a chance, and their renewed distribution agreement, with benefits, means for the first time Dish customers can access Disney’s authenticated live and VOD products, including WATCH Disney, Disney Channel On Demand, Disney Junior On Demand, and Disney XD On Demand. To be refreshed monthly, the Disney Channel On Demand offering will include episodes from series including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates, A.N.T. Farm, Liv and Maddie and Jessie. Disney XD On Demand features a selection of eps from Phineas and Ferb, Pair of Kings, Kickin’ It and others. Select Disney Channel Original Movies will also be available.

PROGRAMMING

Nick News with Linda Ellerbee will hear stories from child refugees in the new special "Fleeing Syria: Children of War," premiering Tuesday, March 11, at 8p on Nickelodeon. The half-hour special features kids who fled Syria because of ongoing conflict to find safety at Jordan’s Camp Zaatari. "We at Nick News remain awed by the resilience of children who often suffer the worst in the human tide of the world’s refugees," says Ellerbee.

LICENSING

Who wouldn’t want to have a drink with a Marvel Entertainment superhero? The company unveiled new collaborations in the drinkware category with Thermos, Zak Designs, ICUP, and Silver Buffalo and Vandor. Drinkware will feature characters from the Avengers and Spider-Man franchises and designs inspired by Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

INTERNATIONAL

BabyTV, a Fox International Channel, has just launched in India on Tata Sky as part of the Kids Pack, joining Disney XD, Disney Channel, Nick, Cartoon Network, Discovery Kids and others. The channel will also be featured on TATA SKY’s new mobile app, called Everywhere TV, for iOS and Android devices.

New programming deals for DHX Media with operators in the Middle East and Central, Eastern Europe and Turkey this week. Chellomedia (Central Europe) renewed season 1 and licensed season 3 of Martha Speaks for its channel Minimax broadcasting in Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic and Slovakia. RTL Kockika (Croatia) picked up Arthur, Johnny Test and Caillou. Arab-broadcasting network MBC Group picked up The Zack Files for its MBC3 channel, and Onet (Poland) picked up Martha Speaks, Johnny Test and Sabrina’s Secret Life.

 

EXECUTIVE MOVES

DreamWorks-owned digital studio AwesomenessTV hired away Walt Disney Studios marketing executive TJ Marchetti to be its new Chief Marketing Officer. Marchetti replaces Margaret Laney, who reportedly is leaving Awesomeness to join a startup venture.

Nickelodeon named Damon Burrell SVP of Consumer Marketing and Advertising, Nickelodeon Group. Burrell, who jumps over from sister net MTV where he was SVP of Consumer Marketing, will oversee consumer marketing and advertising, social media, CRM and data analytics for Nick, as well as manage key property planning for the net’s brands. Prior to joining MTV Burrell served five years as a Group Account Director for Agency.com.

Scholastic UK appointed Miriam Farbey as Publisher, Children’s Books.  Farbey, formerly Global Publisher for DK, will oversee the division’s publishing and design teams.
