Cyn3:

3 things NOT to do during an interview comes from Jennifer Fasig, VP Human Resources at The First Tee

Don’t treat company representatives differently: It shocks me when a candidate is rude to our receptionist. Just last week, a candidate interviewed for a management level position whose voice tone and hand shake were noticeably different when interviewing with a male verse a female colleague. When you are interviewing with a company, remember that any representative may be asked their opinion of you. It is important to treat everyone with respect and professionalism.

Don’t get too comfortable: I have candidates participate in several interviews. One reason is that often, a candidate can forget their professionalism. Examples include propping legs up during the interview, sharing too much personal information and believe it or not … eating candy during the interview. Remember, you are “on” during each interview stage.

Don’t be negative: It is important for candidates to be candid about their experiences, and I’ll often ask open-ended questions that one might go down the wrong path. A favorite interview question- what do you find most frustrating about your work place.  Once I had an accounting candidate tell me she hated small talk in the morning, a job is not the time to be social. My question is a bit of a trick since I don’t want to hear someone complain about their previous bosses, co-workers or the company. This is a good opportunity to share how you may have grown in the workplace, dealt with a difficult challenge or adapted to change.

And one thing to always remember, thank you notes! No need to snail mail your handwritten thank you, a quick email thanking the interview team works just as nicely. It has become a lost art in the job-hunting process and when someone does it well, it always stands out.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Maggie Malina is stepping down from her role as Head of Scripted Programming at MTV and VH1. “It’s time for new adventures, but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to make films and series that combined pop culture and social issues in unique and indelible ways,” said Malina, who joined Viacom in 1998, in a note to staff.

Discovery Communications is making some in-house moves as it nears its merger with Scripps Networks Interactive. Nancy Daniels has been named Chief Brand Officer, Discovery & Factual, for Discovery Communications. Daniels has been President of TLC since 2013. And Howard Lee was promoted to President and General Manager for TLC and Discovery Life Channel; Lee was most recently EVP, Development & Production for TLC and GM of Discovery Life.

Howard Shimmel is leaving as Turner’s Chief Research Officer. Word of his departure comes after Turner promoted Stephano Kim from EVP of digital strategy and operations and chief data strategist to interim chief analytics officer. Kim will oversee a new unit focused on corporate data strategy and analytics; Variety reports the new structure did not include a “sufficiently challenging enough role” for Shimmel.

Blumhouse Entertainment appointed Eben Davidson as Executive Vice President of Scripted Programming and Mary Liso as EVP of Alternative and Non-scripted Programming. Davidson had been SVP of Development for the TV division at Paramount. Prior to Blumhouse, Lisio was EVP Non-fiction and Branded Content for Scott Free and RSA Films.

Mike George, currently CEO of QVC, Inc., has been named President and CEO of Qurate Retail Group, renamed from Liberty Interactive Corporation and comprised of QVC, HSN, zulily, Ballard Designs, Frontgate, Garnet Hill and Grandin Road.
