Viacom is thinking bigger with the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The competition series, previously on Logo, will air on VH1 Fridays at 8p, starting March 24 (Lady Gaga guests). Encores will air on Logo. “Coming off RuPaul’s Emmy win and a ratings record-breaking season of All Stars, the fandom around RuPaul’s Drag Race has only continued to swell as we head into season nine,” said Pamela Post, SVP of original programming & development at Logo. “Broadcasting the show on VH1 will allow more fans to experience the energy, heart and talent these fierce Queens bring to the stage every week.”
Sinclair Broadcast Group approached Tribune Media Co. about striking a deal, reports Reuters. FCC ownership regulations would have to be loosened for the large station owners to make that happen (but that’s where President Trump comes in). Talks now are preliminary.
ABC News president James Goldston issued a statement saying the network has “expressed our concerns to the White House that it operates in a way that’s open, transparent, and fair. We will continue to stand with our colleagues who cover the White House and to protest when any government official fails to live up to those standards.” The Associated Press reported that after certain news outlets were barred from a White House briefing last week, over 230 ABC News employees signed a petition asking the network to take a public stand on restricted access.
The new season of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars kicks off Monday, March 20 at 8p, with contestants including bull rider Bonner Bolton, Charo (Cuchi Cuchi), SNL alum Chris Kattan, World Series champ David Ross, Erika Jayne (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), Heather Morris (Glee), Mr. T, Olympians Nancy Kerrigan and Simone Biles, Bachelor Nick Viall, Fifth Harmony’s Normani Kordei and NFL safety Rashad Jennings. Good Morning America broke the news yesterday.
Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, the accountants in charge of the Academy Awards envelopes for this year’s show, will not be returning next year (surprise!), announced PwC on Wednesday. Cullinan handed Best Picture presenter Warren Beatty the wrong envelope, resulting in an otherwise well-reviewed show ending in turmoil. Cullinan had worked the big show for 4 years, Ruiz for 3. PwC apologized for the mishap shortly after the ceremony.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences issued its own apology Wednesday, for mistakenly showing a photo of I’m-not-dead-yet Jan Chapman in its dedication to the late Janet Patterson. “We sincerely apologize to producer Jan Chapman, whose photo was mistakenly used in the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ tribute for her colleague and dear friend, the late Janet Patterson,” the Academy said in a post on Instagram. “Janet, an Academy member and four-time Oscar-nominated costume designer, was beloved in our community. We extend our deepest apologies and condolences to the Patterson family.”
Major League Baseball is taking a swing at a cross-promotional partnership with HBO’s Game of Thrones. According to Deadline, the promotions will vary by team and will include co-branded merchandise, theme nights and giveaways. MLB hopes the effort will connect it with a younger audience.
Gray Television announced a hefty 40% increase in 4Q16 total revenue versus 4Q15, hitting $236.6 million. Political advertising was a big driver, up 427% to $48.5 million, while retrans consent revenue rose 32%, to $52 million.
Kids First! Film Critics Boot Camp returns to HITN Studios in Brooklyn for the third year this July. The event offers campers the chance to critique and review films, present their views on-camera and interview celebrities.

He can’t stop talking. Chris Hardwick, host of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead after-show Talking Dead, will host Talking with Chris Hardwick for AMC starting Sunday, April 9, a week after the season 7 ender of Walking Dead. “Talking will have the skin of Talking Dead, the soul of the Nerdist podcast and the guts of a Comic-Con panel,” Hardwick said. “I have loved learning how to do a talk show these last six years on Talking Deadbut am eager to expand the format into other areas of pop culture.” It won’t be the only show with Harwick’s name in the title – he also hosts Comedy Central late night game show @Midnight With Chris Hardwick.
Guerrilla, from John Ridley (12 Years a Slave), launches on Showtime Sunday, April 16 at 9p. The limited event series tells the story of a couple whose relationship and values are tested when they liberate a political prisoner and form a radical underground cell in 1970.
Travel Channel’s The Best Place to Be, from Queen Latifah and Flavor Unit, premieres Sunday, April 2 at 5p. Each of 4 one-hour episodes shows viewers the world through the eyes of adventurous celebs.
Coming up this month on American Heroes Channel is the premiere of Nazi Death Squad on Tuesday, March 7 at 10p, followed by new series Incredible Inventions on Saturday, March 18 10p, and UFOs: The Lost Evidence on Sunday, March 26 at 10p.
Season 2 of Saints & Sinners launches on Bounce Sunday, March 5 at 9p on. The net promises a “binge-worthy” season of deceit, greed, betrayals and corruption.
This Old House’s Detroit-based episodes, part of the show’s 37th season, launch Thursday, March 30 (check local listings). Thisoldhouse.com is also debuting its first digital series, Detroit. Once House at a Time, on Friday, March 3.
The new season of Up’s Heartland launches Sunday, April 23 with back-to-back episodes at 8p and 9p, before settling into its regular 8p slot. Previous seasons are on demand on Up Faith & Family.
A new season of Street Outlaws hits Discovery on April 10 at 9p. The show’s return follows a Monday, March 27 at 9p crossover special, Mega Race, pitting Motor Mondays’ Street Outlaws against Fast N’ Loud. (All 3 shows hail from Pilgrim Media Group.)
Fuse First: Russ premieres Monday, March 6 at 6a on Fuse and FM. The show offers a look into the world of rapper and producer Russ
Ghost Brothers returns for season 2 on TLC March 10 at 9p, during the net’s Friday night supernatural strand. On the premiere, the Brothers travel to New Castle, Indiana to investigate paranormal claims at the historic Thornhaven Manor.
Netflix comedy Glow launches June 23. Series is inspired by the ‘80s show about a struggling actress who enters the world of women’s wrestling.
Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews will be among the acts on hand for the TV premiere of Farm Aid 2016 on AXS TV Sunday, March 19 at 10p. Concert was filmed in Virginia last September.

Bobby Moynihan has joined the cast of CBS comedy pilot Me, Myself & I, exploring three periods in a man’s life. The commitment appears to signal the end of Moynihan’s nine-year run on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
Casey Wilson (Happy Endings) will co-star opposite Busy Phillipps in NBC comedy pilot The Sackett Sisters, from 30 Rock’s Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City) has joined the season 2 cast of Swedish crime drama Modus, an original series for Nordic streaming service C More. Cattrall will play the President of the United States, whose trip to Stockholm has devastating consequences.
Taye Diggs will star in ABC drama pilot Doomsday as an engineer and architect, reports TVLine. Diggs is recurring on Fox’s Empire.
Oliver Hudson (Nashville) grabbed the lead opposite Jenna Fischer (The Office) in ABC comedy pilot Splitting Up Together, about a couple whose marriage is reignited by their divorce.
SNL vet Jon Rudnitsky landed a lead role in NBC comedy pilot Relatively Happy, from Max Mutchick (Will & Grace) and Jeff Astrof (Friends), about an adult brother and sister who end up living together.
YouTube’s upcoming YouTube TV will include 40 channels, the Big Four among them, but has yet to add nets from Time Warner, Viacom, Scripps, AMC Networks and other cable companies with popular shows. Cable networks owned by the big broadcasters are included.
A new report from MoffettNathanson Research found traditional pay TV providers declined 1.7% in 4Q16 (down 319,000 subscribers), versus gains for virtual MVPDs like Dish’s Sling TV and AT&T’s DirecTV Now, which added 500,000 subs. “With the results now in from all the largest operators, it is clear cord-cutting of legacy distribution services – that is, without including OTT-delivered virtual MVPD bundles, like Sling TV and DirecTV now (and soon, YouTube TV) – has at least meaningfully accelerated,” said senior research analyst Craig Moffett.
With strong ratings, an upscale audience and shows that are a natural fit for a variety of ad categories, what is the goal of Scripps Networks Interactive this Upfront season? “We want to be paid full value for the media we sell,” Jon Steinlauf, president, ad sales & marketing, tells Cynopsis. “We just don’t think the differential between what the broadcast networks are being paid and what we’re being paid is right….There’s some imbalance right now with the average rating of broadcast relative to the average rating of top 10, top 20 cable when you look at their CPMs. As the leader of a sales organization in TV that has a very valuable audience, as a goal we have to try to think of working to close some of that gap, broadcast prime being what it is today. Broadcast is still bigger, but the spread has narrowed.”
Atop the list of which brands women have the most positive feeling about were Band-Aid, Amazon, Dawn, Google and M&Ms. YouGov BrandIndex released its study on the first day of Women’s History Month.
NBCUniversal’s Esquire and horror net Chiller will be dropped from Charter Communications starting April 25, according to Phillip Swann, who reports Charter has notified subscribers of the change. NBCUni has plans to transition Esquire to online-only later this year, but an NBC spokesperson said there are no plans to shutter Chiller.
Let the Games begin: Discovery Communications announced a new Olympics partnership opportunity for mobile operators with the launch of the first “Official Mobile Broadcaster” product, giving mobile providers the opportunity to co-brand with the Olympic Rings and offer their customers access to the Games. The service will be customized to drive engagement, with an operator-branded channel featuring Olympics real time highlights and news. Discovery Comm. and Eurosport hold exclusive TV and multimedia rights holder for 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018 through to the 2024 Olympics.
Armoza Formats closed a deal with Tresor TV in Germany for social experiment Sex Tape. The idea was first pitched at Armoza’s annual format competition.

Live with Kelly was the only strip in first run syndication to rise from the week prior, up 4% to 2.4. The talker’s annual “After Oscar” special had a 3.1/11 primary run weighted metered market average, up 24% from the prior 4 weeks.
Looks like entertainment magazines benefited from the epic Academy Awards fail with coverage on February 27. Entertainment Tonight rose 14% over its year-ago February sweep time period (4.0/7 metered market average), while Access Hollywood was up 17% (2.4/5), Extra rose 6% (1.9/4) and The Insider had a 23% boost (to 1.6/4).
Last Man Standing hit syndication ratings highs, include Households (2.1, up 5% over last week), total viewers (3.17 million, up 7% and A18-49 (.9, up 13%).
The series premiere of WE tv’s Mama June: From Not to Hot on Friday delivered 2.3 million total viewers in Nielsen Live+3 ratings, making it the network’s highest series premiere ever in total viewers and among key demos. The show ranked as Friday night’s #1 program among women and the #1 ad-supported cable program in its time period.
