In its second round of layoffs, Roku plans to lay off 200 employees, or about 6% of its workforce. The restructuring is designed to control operating expenses and refocus funds on projects with a higher return on investment.
ABC News has downsized its executive team. Following layoffs ordered by the network’s corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company, ABC News eliminated staffers including Wendy Fisher, Galen Gordon, Mary Noonan, Alison Rudnick, Chris Vlasto, Heather Riley and David Herndon. The cuts are part of the company’s decision to cut 7,000 jobs over the coming months.
Peacock and Duolingo played a prank for April Fools’ Day. The streaming service and language-learning app promoted a fake reality show to publicize discounts on each of their services. “Love Language” follows 10 singles looking for true love while living under one roof – but here’s the catch: none of them speak the same language. The contestants participate in language lessons from Duolingo, which they must pass to find a match. Duolingo VP of Global Marketing Manu Orssaud said, “By partnering with Peacock, a leader in buzzworthy reality TV, we were able take this approach to a whole new level by bringing Duolingo’s unique, and unhinged, spin to the romantic reality series space, featuring none other than Duo the Owl.”
NBC canceled Nick Jonas, Liza Koshy and Shakira-led series “Dancing with Myself” after one season. The dancing competition, originally hosted by Camille Kostek when it premiered in May 2022 for eight episodes, saw a group compete in dances designed by the show’s celebrity coaches.
Ballen Studios pledged $1 million to honor those affected by violent crimes. John Allen’s global multiplatform content company contributed the donation via the MrBallen Foundation, awarding 100% of the funds in financial grants to victims, families and communities. Allen said, “My hope was to provide a pathway to give back, and I’m proud to share the entirety of donations that come into the foundation go out the door and directly to aid victims, their families and organizations working at the root of issues to make a genuine difference in the lives of people that need it most.”

An all-Black cast will star in a Martha’s Vineyard spinoff of “Summer House.” Set in one of the first beachside destinations where African Americans could purchase property, Nicholas Arrington, Jasmine Ellis Cooper, Silas Cooper and more star in “Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard.” The Bravo reality series is slated to premiere May 7 on the network.
Admission is now open: The “Star Trek” universe expands with “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” Paramount+ issued a series order for the project that follows a new class of cadets, from Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Roddenberry Entertainment and CBS Studios. Production is slated to begin in 2024.
An anime series based on “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is coming to Netflix. When Scott, a part-time garage band member, falls for a girl named Ramona, he fights to defeat her seven previous lovers. The 2010 original film’s cast has signed on to voice the reimagined characters, including Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Aubrey Plaza, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill and more will also lend their voices to the series.
Netflix, CBC and APTN greenlit a new Arctic comedy series. From Inuit co-creators Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, and with executive producer Miranda de Pencier, the as-yet-untitled series follows a young Inuk mother trying to build a new future for herself in a small Arctic town. “This series is full of stories that come straight from our hearts and our funny bones,” the co-creators said. “We’ve drawn from our experiences as Inuit women living, laughing, crying and shacking up while Native.”
An Aaron Foley-inspired series is in development at Amazon. Telling the story of three gay millennial Black men in Detroit, the pilot from Chuck for “Boys Come First,” will be produced by Field Trip and Amazon Studios.
Abacus Media Rights acquired the international distribution rights to “Legacy List with Matt Paxton.” The series produced by indie production company My Entertainment and Shipyard Entertainment is about the hidden treasures, heirlooms and precious memories of homes. It currently has four seasons under its belt, with the fifth in production this year.
Blumhouse secured rights to the onscreen adaptation of “Mr. Entity: The Moffitt Family Haunting” manuscript. Telling the story of Deborah and Jessica Moffitt, who alleged they were terrorized by a spirit known as “Mr. Entity” from the late 1980s to early 1990s in a 2022 article, the Blumhouse Television series will be developed in collaboration with Good Caper Content.

The fifth and final season of FX’s “Mayans M.C.” premieres May 24. The first two episodes of the 10-episode biker drama set on the California-Mexico border will debut at 10p on FX, streaming the next day on Hulu, with one new episode each following week.
“Finding Your Roots” season nine finale premieres April 4 on PBS. Using genealogical detective work and DNA analysis, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. analyzes the lineage of Billy Crudup and Tamera Mowry-Housley.
The latest original content from Magnolia Network starts debuting in April. New series and seasons of titles such as “Big Sky Kitchen with Eduardo Garcia,” “Capturing Home,” “From the Source” and “Ranch to Table” will launch on cable and streaming, on HBO Max and discovery+, this summer and fall.
Apple TV+ announced a new 10-part docuseries to celebrate Earth Day. Premiering globally April 21, Tom Hiddleston will take audiences from pole to rainforest, encountering some of the world’s largest species, with his narration of the nature series “Big Beasts.” Two new episodes will premiere each week until May 19.
“Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” returns April 26. Also starring Michael Bolton, Ronny Chieng, Frankie Muniz and more, the third rendition of the Comedy Central original series is the directorial debut for Awkwafina. Inspired by her real-life story of growing up in Queens, New York, with her dad, grandma and cousin, Nora leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer borough-NYC, according to the description.
“Lidia Celebrates America: Flavors That Define Us” is scheduled to premiere May 30 on PBS. In the hour-long special, chef, bestselling author and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich travels the country to meet with multigenerational Americans shaping the definition of what it means to be an American.
Gabrielle Union celebrates her birthday with “My Journey to 50” on BET+. Traveling across Africa, from Zanzibar to Ghana, with her husband Dwyane Wade, their children and friends, Union sheds light on the path of her heritage. The two-part special documenting the actress, producer and author’s birthday celebration premieres June 15.
“Fast Foodies” gets a nine-week run on Food Network. Beginning April 13, the cooking reality series will kick off a ten-episode run with back-to-back episodes and celebrity guests Joel McHale and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Kitman Labs and Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer announced a multiyear partnership. The deal will support advancement in player development, coaching, scouting and recruitment, and will create a prototype for a data-driven soccer club, according to a statement. DAZN made a “significant” blanket bid for coverage of the English Football League for the 2024-25 season. If accepted, the bid would mark an end to the Saturday 3p blackout rule for domestic coverage, and would hand over the rights to 1,891 matches across the Championship, League One, League Two, EFL Cup, EFL Trophy and end-of-season playoffs. The EFL’s current deal with Sky Sports will expire at the end of next season.

Shondaland’s “The Residence” will star Barrett Foa in a recurring role. The “NCIS: Los Angeles” alum will star as “the first gentleman” of the White House in the murder mystery adaptation.
The BBC plans to slash 1,000 hours of shows annually. The British public service broadcaster said there will be “difficult choices to come this year.”
Omens Studios secured a multi-season commission for two new series. Based on “123 Number Squad” and “Leo the Wildlife Ranger,” “Paula & Pals” will develop three seasons in the original series’ neighborhood, Numberville, as well as other worlds. “Leo the Wildlife Ranger” will continue with four new seasons, this time refocused on Leo and Katie’s adventures to protect wildlife and uncover facts about the natural world.
All four seasons of “Turbozaurs” are now available in Singapore. Produced by American animation studio Tale Wind, the animated series about dinosaurs that can transform themselves into machines was previously available in 30 countries and in 15 languages, with a fifth season to release soon.
