IN THE NEWS
Twitter CEO and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak are among the tech leaders who signed an open letter calling for a six-month moratorium on the development of advanced A.I. systems. Over 1100 signatories urged technology companies to cease training A.I. systems that would be “more powerful than GPT-4,” which is the latest large language processing A.I. developed by OpenAI. Musk, a cofounder of OpenAI, broke with the company in 2018, and has been critical of the company since then. The letter cites risks with A.I. systems such as GPT-4 “becoming human-competitive at general tasks,” and being used to generate misinformation on a massive scale as well as the mass automation of jobs. The letter says that decisions about A.I. “must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders” and that more powerful A.I. systems should only “be developed once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.”
Bryant Gumbel will receive the 2023 Sports Emmys Lifetime Achievement award at the Sports Emmys ceremony on May 22. “Bryant‘s incredible resume spanning ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,’ NBC Sports, NBC News, CBS News, PBS and many other projects has brought dramatic and human news and sports stories to life for audiences throughout his career making him a clear front runner for this distinct honor,” said Adam Sharp, President & CEO of NATAS.
RENEWALS & CANCELLATIONS
Its upcoming season six will be the last for Freeform’s “Black-ish” spinoff, “Grown-ish.” “From the stories we’ve told to the talent we’ve fostered and, most importantly, the memories made, I could not be more proud of everything we’ve accomplished and the -ish family I’ve been a part of,” said creator and executive producer Kenya Barris.
Netflix wasted no time renewing “The Night Agent” – which racked up 168.7 million viewing hours its first few days on the platform – for season two. “The last week has been a whirlwind as we’ve finally been able to share ‘The Night Agent’ with the world,” said series creator, executive producer and showrunner Shawn Ryan. “To see the tremendous reaction to the show has been a great joy and is a credit to our cast, our writers, our directors, our crew and our partners at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix.
Police drama “Blue Bloods” will be back for season 14, along with original series stars Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Will Estes. While a renewal would have seemed to be a no-brainer – the show has been CBS’ most-watched Friday night program since launch, and performs well in syndication and streaming – 25% salary reductions for stars and producers reportedly had to be negotiated to before the network moved forward on the pricey scripted series.
NBC competition series “American Ninja Warrior” has been renewed for a sixteenth season, ahead of its season 15 premiere on June 5. Production on both seasons is underway with A. Smith & Co.

STREAMING
Eighty-seven percent of US internet households have at least one OTT subscription, according to a survey from Parks Associates OTT Video Market Tracker online service for 2022, and 40% of households share or use shared credentials, up from 27% in 2019. But linear TV is still alive. “Despite the dominance of subscription over-the-top (OTT) services, 44% of households continue to watch some form of pay TV, indicating that there is still interest in live/linear and ad-supported forms of content,” said Jennifer Kent, VP of Research at Parks Associates. “As consumers examine their finances out of fear of a recession, free streaming television continues to gain popularity. Savvy, ad-tolerant customers will view advertisements in return for cheaper solutions.”
Another streaming survey, this one from Reviews.org, found that one in three Americans have canceled a streaming subscription in the past six months. Top reasons for canceling included cutting back on monthly expenses (44%), not watching enough (37%) and using a different streaming service more often (9%). On the flip side, 55% of Americans joined a new streaming service in the past six months.
