Disney will start the first of three rounds of layoffs this week, said the company’s CEO, Bob Iger. A second round of cutbacks will take place in April and a third before the beginning of summer. About 7000 jobs will be impacted. “In tough moments, we must always do what is required to ensure Disney can continue delivering exceptional entertainment to audiences and guests around the world – now, and long into the future,” wrote Iger in a memo.
The Advertising Research Foundation has called for a “gradual migration” away from “TV households” to “TV-accessible (TVA) households” as the basis of TV measurement. The proposed move would address shifts in viewing dynamics driven by broadband access and mobile devices, including a rise in penetration of broadband only households from 25% to 31% in the last year, and the ubiquity of mobile devices with high-quality screens. “Forty-one percent of consumers with television sets reported watching professionally produced programming on a device the previous day,” said Paul Donato, Chief Research Officer at the ARF. “These dynamics highlight the problems with cross-device measurement today.”
Scripted originals account for nearly 90% of global SVOD original content spending, according to Ampere Analysis. Crime and thriller titles make up 24% of spend, followed by 22% for sci-fi and fantasy shows like Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and Disney’s “The Mandalorian.” Close to 15% of spend is on comedy shows, and over 10% goes to Children and Family content. But something’s got to give. “As the competition in the streaming industry continues to grow, platforms must continue to explore cost-effective unscripted formats to keep audiences engaged, emphasizing the importance of balancing quality and affordability in optimizing content strategies,” noted Ampere analyst Neil Anderson.
Digital US ad spend fell by 8% year-over-year in February 2023, with receding ad spend in linear (-12%) and digital TV (-25%). However, overall digital held a majority share of 59% of ad spend, according to Standard Media Index. Digital video (4%) and audio (8%) were the only two media channels with year-over-year lift in ad revenue in February 2023. In addition, eight out of the twelve product category groups entered new negative ad spending territory in February, with Technology, Entertainment & Media, Wellness, and Financial falling more than 20% year-over-year. CPG (+19%) and Pharma (+14% ) bucked the downward trend.
Sinclair Broadcast Group announced a multi-year, national agreement with USC Shoah Foundation—The Institute for Visual History and Education to assist with the recording of interviews with genocide survivors as part of the Institute’s Last Chance Testimony Collection Initiative, an effort to collect testimonies from the last living survivors and witnesses to the Holocaust and other genocides. Sinclair will provide its production facilities to film testimonies at its broadcast television stations around the US.
Jewelry retailer and shopping network JTV announced its launch on 64 stations owned by The E.W. Scripps Company. JTV’s broadcasts and will now be available free, OTA on channels adjacent to Scripps’ networks and other home shopping networks.

There were 41.3 additions across subscription VOD platforms in 3Q22, up from 34.8 million in the year-earlier period, according to Antenna. But there were also 33.8 million cancellations in the quarter, versus 21.7 million dropped subs. Peacock saw the biggest gain (+37%), followed by Paramount+ (+23%), HBO Max (+15%), Apple TV+ (+12%), Discovery+ (+7%), Showtime (+3%); Disney+ (+2%), and Starz (+1%).
Peacock is adding livestreams of MSBC’s “Morning Joe” and CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” The shows will be part of a Morning News Live collection for Peacock Premium subscribers.
TuneIn and CNN announced a multiyear extension of their partnership, which has included audio simulcasts of CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, HLN and a commercial-free CNN station available to TuneIn Premium subscribers.
