IN THE NEWS

FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel has proposed that cable and satellite providers be required to specify an “all-in” price for video service in promotional materials and monthly billing. “We’re working to make it so the advertised price for a service is the price you pay when your bill arrives and isn’t littered with anything that resembles junk fees,” said the FCC. “Not only will this reduce cost confusion and make it easier for consumers to compare services, but this proposal will also increase competition among cable and broadcast satellite providers through improved price transparency.”

FOX has renewed its mid-season dramas “Accused” and “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” for sophomore seasons to air in 2023-24. No surprise there – the January 22 premiere of “Accused” registered a 2.5 Live+35 Day rating and 14.6 multi-platform viewers, making it television’s highest-rated drama debut in two years, while the January 8 debut of “Alert” drew 8.5 million multi-platform viewers, up 112% from its Live+SD numbers. Both series are co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and FOX Entertainment.

The final four episodes of season one of CBS’ “Lingo” are moving to the 2023-24 season, to air as part of the quiz show’s sophomore run. The series has been replaced on Wednesday nights with repeats of procedurals.

A+E Networks is launching The Lifetime Network Movies Wine Club, a wine subscription program managed by Direct Wines. The goal: “elevate an already memorable viewing experience that our devoted audiences have grown to expect from Lifetime’s unique brand of storytelling,” said Sydney Snyder, VP, Consumer Enterprises at A+E Networks.

Keeping it real: The Writers Guild of America is seeking to restrict the use of AI as it negotiates with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for a new contract. “The WGA’s proposal to regulate use of material produced using artificial intelligence or similar technologies ensures the Companies can’t use AI to undermine writers’ working standards including compensation, residuals, separated rights and credits,” said the guild in a statement.

Spectrum will donate $10,000 to the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra through the 2022-2023 Stand For The Arts Awards, a partnership with Ovation TV that recognizes local arts, cultural and educational organizations and programs. Since the initiative started in 2017, Ovation TV and Spectrum have given out 60 awards totaling $600,000 towards arts education.

TECH TALK

Not surprisingly, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew did not have an easy time of it at the House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on Thursday. Faced with the Biden administration’s threat to ban the app unless its Chinese owners agree to spin off their share of the platform, Chew characterized the Chinese government’s access to TikTok’s user data as “hypothetical and theoretical risks.” But Chew faced questions about user videos that promote suicide (“Your technology is literally leading to death,” said Rep. Gus Bilirakis), and a post that contained information about the hearing that was underway, including a picture of an assault weapon (“You expect us to believe that you are capable of maintaining the data security, privacy and security of a 150 million Americans where you can’t even protect people in this room,” said Rep. Kat Cammack). “This hasn’t been a fun day. I know that,” Rep. Russ Fulcher told Chew as the hits piled on. “It hasn’t been a fun day for us either.”

So what next? “It is likely TikTok will be banned in the United States unless it is moved into full US control,” said Karsten Weide, Principal and Chief Analyst at W Media Research. “We know Chinese Internet companies cooperate with the Chinese government, so the risk of sensitive data being transferred to China is real, as is that of TikTok being used for disinformation. This doesn’t even take into account the lack of protections for minors, and the extreme addictiveness of the service.”

Sales of Amazon’s Fire TV streaming devices and smart TVs have topped 200 million units, following a milestone of 150 million Fire TV devices announced in January of last year. Amazon is expanding its offerings to include three new sizes of the Fire TV Omni QLED Series lineup as well as its lowest-priced HDTV to date, the Fire TV 2-Series, which starts at $200 for the 32-inch model.

PubMatic and Proximic by Comscore announced the integration of Proximic by Comscore’s Predictive Audiences and Content Targeting solutions into the PubMatic platform. Data from Proximic by Comscore is now available to media buyers via PubMatic’s Connect platform, enabling PubMatic’s clients to leverage new targeting options to reach key audiences in premium, brand safe environments across desktop, mobile, and CTV.

STREAMING

Demand Africa has expanded the distribution of its FAST channel to Amazon Freevee in the US. “DA’s new agreement with Freevee and overall expansion efforts reflects the increased demand for diverse stories from Black voices worldwide,” said Chris Eckman, SVP Operations & OTT Services, The Africa Channel. “With this increased distribution, Demand Africa stands ready to meet that rising demand and reinforce its commitment to supporting and celebrating partners in the Black content creation community by sharing their stories worldwide.”

The Cleveland Guardians and Seattle Mariners anchor full day coverage at 9:30p on FS1. The Giants-Yankees matchup also marks the start of FOX Deportes’ 2023 schedule, featuring more than 40 live games. Starting Saturday, May 6, FOX carries regionalized action on 16 Saturdays in prime time. Buffalo Wild Wings continues to sign NIL deals for the March Madness 2023 tournament, the latest with University of Colorado guard Jaylyn Sherrod. Earlier this week, Sherrod led the Buffaloes to their first Sweet 16 appearance in 20 years, with a game-changing free throw shot that sent the game versus Duke into OT and triggered Buffalo Wild Wings’ Overtime Wingtime (free wings for fans).

Harold Reynolds and Adnan Virk will team up to co-host a daily 6p edition of “MLB Tonight” on MLB Network. The show premieres Opening Day, Thursday, March 30 at 12p and again at 4p, before settling into its regular 6p timeslot on Friday, March 31.

“Limited time” is over for Friday Night Baseball fans. Apple offered games for free for a limited time after it struck a streaming deal for the games last spring, but now viewers will need an Apple TV+ subscription to watch (unless they’re at out-of-home venues with DirecTV for Business, which carry the games). “We’re excited for fans to experience everything new we’re bringing this season,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Services. “Apple TV+ truly has something for everyone, from two live baseball games every Friday night, to an incredible slate of award-winning original films and series — there’s never been a better time to sign up.”

The National Women’s Soccer League and Endeavor Streaming are teaming to launch a global streaming service for viewers outside of the US for the upcoming 2023 season. Prime Video and ONE Championship return to the Circle with “ONE Fight Night 8: Superlek vs. Williams,” broadcast live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium today, March 24 at starting at 8p. The event will be headlined by a ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Championship matchup between Superlek “The Kicking Machine” Kiatmoo9 of Thailand and Danial “Mini T” Williams of Australia, and will be available exclusively to Prime members in the US and Canada.

The New York Islanders and Nickelodeon are teaming up again for a slime-filled experience on Saturday, March 25. The third annual event will include the integration of Nickelodeon shows and characters across social and digital channels and in arena. Fans at UBS Arena and those following along on social platforms will receive Nickelodeon themed content throughout the game, and SpongeBob SquarePants will join Islanders mascots, Sparky and Nyisles, for a meet and greet with fans at the matchup against the Buffalo Sabres.
