DirecTV resumed carriage of far-right channel Newsmax. After reaching a multi-year distribution deal earlier this week, the TV provider – one of the first distributors to provide Newsmax nearly a decade ago – has added channel 349 back to its broadcast and streaming services, at no additional charge to subscribers. The conservative TV outlet that frequently covered former President Donald Trump’s rallies and claims of election fraud in 2020 first went dark on the provider in January, which Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy called a “blatant act of political discrimination and censorship” and Republican lawmakers said was “an assault on free speech.”
Dick Van Dyke suffered minor injuries in a car crash. The 97-year-old film and television star was involved in a single-car crash on Wednesday, March 15, when his car slid into a gate in Malibu, Calif., after the area experienced record rainfall. Paramedics treated Van Dyke for bleeding from the nose and mouth at the scene.
Telemundo stations are bringing local Spanish-language news to Samsung TV Plus. Users can now stream the news and original content through FAST channels Noticias Telemundo in California and Noticias Telemundo in Florida, with Noticias Telemundo in Noreste and Noticias Telemundo in Texas expected to launch in April. The deal marks the first of its kind for Samsung TV Plus.
Tubi unveiled new first-to-market planning integrations and partnerships. The Fox Corporation ad-supported video-on-demand service made the announcements at Tubi Connect, an event in New York City. The integrations utilize VideoAmp’s Premium Video Planning Tool, LiveRamp TV Activation and Comscore audience measurement, as well as Pause Ads to expand its Sponsorship and Total Takeover formats.
Alyssa Farah Griffin was absent from “The View” yesterday following a COVID diagnosis. Mahershala Ali has signed on to narrate Netflix’s “Chimp Empire.” The two-time Academy Award winner will bring the four-part natural history series on chimpanzee society in Uganda’s Ngogo Forest to life, directed by James Reed. The series premieres on April 19.
“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” is getting a spinoff series. Starring the Netflix original film trilogy’s cast member Anna Cathcart (Kitty), the younger sister and teen matchmaker shares her own love story in “XO, Kitty.” The 10-episode, half-hour dramedy series premieres on the streamer on May 18.
Fox Entertainment gave the green light to “HAVOC!” From Peabody-winning writer Michael Glouberman and CRE84U Entertainment, FOX and Bento Box will collaborate on the story of a supervillain’s final attempt to conquer the world, this time with a team of misfits.
A drama series inspired by the life of Heidi Fleiss is coming to HBO Max. Known as the “Hollywood Madam,” Fleiss ran a prostitution ring in Los Angeles that catered to high-profile clients, before her arrest in the early ‘90s. Following her nearly two-year sentence in prison, she has since made appearances on “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” “Celebrity Big Brother” and more. The project will be the first time her life story has been portrayed narratively onscreen.
Oxygen renewed the true crime docuseries “Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins.” Exploring the arc of intimate relationships that can turn murderous, the show features Manhattan District Attorney’s Office former criminal prosecutor Jenkins offering relationship commentary.
Jay Ellis is developing “Freeway Phantom” into a scripted series and podcast. The “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Insecure” star will develop the unsolved story of six Black girls’ – Carol Spinks, Darlenia Johnson, Brenda Crockett, Nenomoshia Yates, Benda Woodard and Diane Williams – murders in Washington, DC, in the 1970s; the killer was never caught. “The lack of coverage, then and now, surrounding the murders of these six Black girls is shameful,” said Donald Albright, co-founder and CEO of Tenderfoot TV. “We are grateful to collaborate with iHeartPodcasts and Black Bar Mitzvah to not only tell their stories, but to further investigate these horrific crimes, and address many of the same systemic issues that persist today.” From Ellis’ Black Bar Mitzvah, Tenderfoot TV and iHeart Podcasts, the podcast series launches May 17.
The Jim Henson Company has partnered with marblemedia to develop a live action comedy series. Created by Miklos Perlus, and based on his semi-autobiographical script, “Felix” tackles the topic of children’s mental health – from the eyes of a boy, his family and his “feels.” Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™ will create five original characters that manifest the larger-than-life emotions that Felix learns to live with. “We could think of no better partner on this project than The Jim Henson Company to join us in creating a transformative family television series”, said marblemedia’s A.J. Trauth. “We share a desire to bring the much-needed conversation around children’s mental health directly to audiences across North America, and the world. Stone Village acquired the exclusive rights to “The Immortality Key.” Based on Brian Muraresku’s New York Times bestselling book, “The Immortality Key: The Secret History of the Religion with No Name,” the film production company plans to produce a multi-part TV series described as “‘Game of Thrones’ but with psychedelics.”
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
The ninth and final season of “Endeavor” premieres on June 18. The PBS Masterpiece detective drama spinoff starring Shaun Evans and Roger Allam, with other former characters set to return for the finale, will unravel new crimes and unsolved cases in the concluding season.
Season two of “From” premieres April 23 on MGM+. Unraveling the mystery of a town that traps all who enter, the series’ season one premiere was the most-viewed original series premiere in the history of the network.
Neil Patrick Harris reprises his role as Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Father.” Harris was a cast member on the original CBS series, “How I Met Your Mother,” for nine seasons, earninb four Emmy Award nominations. Barney will return for the two-episode mid-season finale of the near-future spinoff, in which protagonist Sophie (Hilary Duff) tells her son the story of how she met his father. The series will resume on May 23.
“My Favorite Planet: An Earth Day Marathon” airs on April 22. Celebrating and raising awareness for the planet, Antenna TV will kick off Earth Day with the pilot episode “My Favorite Martian” at 10a. The alien invasion series originally aired from 1963 to 1966 for a total of 107 episodes – the first 75 of which were filmed in black and white – starring Ray Walston as Uncle Martin, a martian stranded on earth, and Bill Bixby as Tim O’Hara, a human reporter.
Fox News isn’t swimming with the tide when it comes to streaming. At the network’s Upfront event on Tuesday, Fox News Media Ad Sales EVP Jeff Collins said, “Now we know there’s a lot of talk with audiences flowing into streaming and everybody’s watching streaming these days. Well, the fact of the matter is if you take a look at average audiences or rating across Fox News Channel, not the entirety of Fox News Media, just Fox News Channel, and you compare that with the largest streamers out there, Fox News would actually be the fourth largest streamer. Ahead of Amazon Prime, ahead of Disney + and ahead of HBO Max.” That said, “Of course, we continue to invest in digital properties as well,” added Collins. “We have over 100 million uniques on Digital, and we have more time spent on our digital properties than any other publisher. Not just any other news publisher, any other publisher period.”
The U.S. Soccer Foundation renewed its exclusive partnership with Telemundo as its official Spanish-language media partner. Aimed at amplifying the “United for Girls” Playbook and helping organizations engage girls and women in underserved communities in soccer, the partnership spotlights the organization’s commitment to encourage Latino boys and girls to live healthy lives through soccer. “We are thrilled to partner with the U.S. Soccer Foundation because we strongly believe in supporting initiatives that create more opportunities for unstoppable Latino girls and women,” said Christina Kolbjornsen, SVP of corporate and external affairs at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises.
The road to the UEFA Euro 2024 continues with Italy vs England on FS1 today. The reigning UEFA Euro champ Italy faces off against England at 3:30p, followed by Sweden vs Belgium on FS1 at 3:30p tomorrow. FOX Sports and Fubo Sports, America’s home for the 2024 soccer championship, announced coverage plans and schedules for the first two rounds of the European Qualifiers through March 28. The network will air 20 matches and six friendlies across FS1, FS2 and FOX Soccer Plus.
SuperTennis acquired the rights to the US Open. The free-to-air Italian Tennis and Padel Federation channel recently inked the multi-year deal, marking the first time the entire competition will be available on free-to-air TV in Italy. The tournament was previously shown in Italy through Warner Bros. Discovery’s Eurosport channels, until the company’s pan-European agreement last month did not include event coverage in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
TikTok updated its Community Guidelines. Facing an investigation and potential US ban, the ByteDance-owned social media platform went on the counteroffensive to address AI-generated content, hate speech and election integrity on its app. The company said it will share its Community Principles – “based on our commitment to uphold human rights and aligned with international legal frameworks” – for the first time. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will appear before US Congressional lawmakers today over privacy and data-security practices, as well as the company’s relationship with the Chinese government.
“Only Murders in the Building” added three cast members to season three. Jeremy Shamos, Linda Emond and Wesley have joined the Hulu original comedy-mystery series led by Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short – with Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, Jesse Williams and Ashley Park also starring this season.
Jamie Lee Curtis will executive produce and guest star in “The Sticky.” The Amazon Original series inspired by the 2011 “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist” will also star Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos and Guillaume Cyr.
Elizabeth Yu and Hilda Martin signed on to star in an NBC drama pilot from Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, Yu will play Young Maggie and Martin will play Young Hazel – two book nerds and best friends – in the drama pilot about an Instagram-famous book reviewer.
BBC Studios plans to lay off about 25 employees in its Children’s & Education department. A BBC spokesman said, “To deliver our creative ambitions for Children’s & Education, we have to make difficult decisions to ensure we have the right structure and the ability to focus on the content that has the highest impact.”
When it rains, it pours: Pluto TV added a new channel from The Weather Network to offer Canadian audiences weather coverage for major cities, a new morning form, long-form programming and more. This marks the first weather-related programming service to be provided on FAST channels in Canada.
Amazon announced it has sold approximately 200 million Fire TV devices globally. While expanding its Smart TV product lineup, the company has launched three new size selections: 43, 50 and 55 inches, starting at an entry price of $449.99. Amazon also indicated plans to expand its branded TVs into the UK, Germany and Mexico.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” takes Italy. Paramount+ has signed off on an Italian rendition of the drag competition series, set to launch in Italy before being rolled out across the US and Latin America.
