IN THE NEWS

AMC’s “Killing Eve will conclude with its upcoming, eight-epiode fourth season, premiering in 2022. Laura Neal (“Sex Education”) continues the “Killing Eve” tradition of a new lead writer every season, following Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emerald Fennell and Suzanne Heathcote. Neal is also an executive producer on season four. But while AMC might be burying “Killing Eve,” Dan McDermott, President of Original Programming for AMC Networks, said AMC is developing “potential extensions” that would keep the franchise alive.

ABC ordered seasons 17 and 18 of “The Bachelorette,” with both set to air in 2021. It’s the first time two seasons of the reality show will air during the same calendar year. “The Bachelorette,” typically a summer show for ABC, was moved to fall 2020 because of production shutdowns – and ranked as the #4 broadcast entertainment program in the A18-49 demo.

Fox employees are expected back in the office no earlier than September 7. “While we spent the last year working in new, and often remote, ways, you have continued to prioritize caring for each other,” wrote CEO Lachlan Murdoch in a memo to employees. “Similarly, the health and safety of our workforce has remained my priority. With that as the guiding principle, we are deferring our next possible phase one reopening date.” The prior target was in April.

CBS extended its production hiatus for “The Talk,” amid new allegations that co-host Sharon Osbourne used offensive language to refer to former co-hosts Julie Chen and Sara Gilbert. Osbourne was already in hot water for defending Piers Morgan after he accused Meghan Markle of lying about having suicidal thoughts. “Sharon is disappointed but unfazed and hardly surprised by the lies, the recasting of history and the bitterness coming out at this moment,” said her rep. For its part, CBS said it is “very mindful of the important concerns expressed and discussions taking place regarding events on ‘The Talk.’ This includes a process where all voices are heard, claims are investigated and appropriate action is taken where necessary.” The show has extended its production hiatus until next Tuesday.

NBC canceled “World of Dance” after four seasons, the last of which wrapped in August. After three solidly-rated installments, the reality competition had a shakier season four.

Facing outcry for it lack of diversity, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association approved a plan that would increase membership to a minimum of 100 members, with 13% of the total Black journalists. The news came shortly after over 100 public relations companies demanded that the HFPA, which runs the Golden Globes, make “profound and lasting” change, or lose participation from their clients at HFPA events.

In the A25-54 demo, 54% of consumers said ads on streaming services were more relevant than those on traditional cable networks.

Viewership for this year’s socially distant Grammys dropped by about half, to 9.2 million, but the telecast still earned CBS about $80 million in national TV advertising, on par with last year’s pre-pandemic event. Lincoln Motor had 10 spots during the show, according to iSpot.tv, followed by Progressive (6), Subway (5) and four each for Paramount+, Bacardi, Ford Motor, McDonald’s, Warner Bros., Truly Hard Seltzer and Voltaren.

BNC, the news network dedicated to covering the Black and Brown communities, has reached an agreement with CBS Media Ventures to augment the network’s Direct Response and National advertising sales team. CBS Media Ventures will provide BNC with increased representation for Direct Response advertising agencies as well as enhanced engagement with National Brands. The partnership is aimed at generating more spot advertising and sponsorship opportunities for brands looking to connect with BNC’s audience. “We’re thrilled to partner with CBS Media Ventures…their team is aligned with our values, they understand why we exist and want to help drive our vision,” said Princell Hair, President and CEO of BNC. “Connecting with a demographic that has more than $1.3 trillion in annual spend presents significant opportunities, and we’re looking forward to working with CMV on building value for brands that want to engage with BNC.”

Total retail video impressions grew +63% year-over-year in February, and CTV impressions grew +159%, according to the Innovid iQ dashboard. The biggest jump in the retail world came from programmatic audience-buying, which saw a +212% YOY increase. “Retail brands are doubling down on CTV and programmatic, a sign that the modernizing of the industry isn’t just taking place at the store level,” said Stephanie Geno, SVP of Marketing at Innovid. “Retailers are really embracing digital capabilities to reach their shoppers where they already are and building unified experiences across all touchpoints, across all channels.” While every vertical saw an increase in video impressions compared to the year prior, the biggest winners were Retail (+63%), Auto (+57%), CPG (+55%) and Telecom (+54%).

Advertising data, measurement, and analytics software company EDO announced the launch Ad EnGage CI (Competitive Intelligence) Streaming. Through the offering, marketers can access ad occurrence and targeting data across major premium streaming platforms, including Hulu, Tubi, Paramount+, Peacock, and Roku. The platform also provides insights into trends at the category and brand level. “We always see that greater transparency grows a marketplace. In this day and age, the streaming platforms need to showcase the advertising activity on their services, while marketers need to be able to make critical decisions to successfully deliver against their media investments,” said Kevin Krim, CEO & President, EDO, Inc. “With the expansion of our Ad EnGage platform into AVOD streaming, advertising sellers and brand marketers will now have access to EDO’s precise, reliable data on the non-linear platforms where they want to spend more.”
