Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 13, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
 

Turner Sports and CBS Sports will celebrate nine years as partners for this year’s 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament, serving up live coverage of all 67 games once again across four national television networks – TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV – with all games streamed on NCAA March Madness Live. This year will see CBS carry the NCAA Final Four National Semifinals on April 6, as well as the National Championship game on April 8. The Regional Final games will once again be split by TBS and CBS. TBS will air the games on Saturday beginning at 6p while CBS will televise the games on Sunday afternoon starting at 2p. Coverage of the 2019 Division I Men’s Basketball Championship will begin with a one-hour Selection Show on Sunday from 6-7p on CBS.  Host Greg Gumbel will be joined by analysts Clark Kellogg and Seth Davis. Overall, Turner will air 43 game telecasts across its three networks while CBS will broadcast 24 games.
 
 
PROGRAMMING

The Drone Racing League has a new home, announcing a new streaming partnership with Twitter and broadcast agreement with NBC Sports to carry the 2019 DRL Allianz World Championship Season. Competition debuts on Aug. 11 at 2p on NBC and Twitter. For the first time ever, DRL will feature pro drone racing content concurrently on all screens, including mobile phones, tablets, PCs, and TVs, immersing fans worldwide into their thrilling FPV (First Person View) action.
 
ESPN gears up for its second consecutive year of coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship this week, and announced that offerings will be expanding for 2019 with two new race week programs joining the telecast schedule for all 21 races. The new season launches this week with the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix from the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit. ESPN is again teaming with Sky Sports and Formula 1 to bring Sky Sports’ award-winning presentation of Formula 1 racing to American viewers. New this season will be Sky’s Welcome to the Weekend program, which will air on Thursdays of race weekends on ESPN3.
 
FOX Sports unveiled the heavyweight team of broadcasters highlighting the first-ever FOX Sports Premier Boxing Champions PPV: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Mike Garcia. Current WBC Welterweight World Champion Shawn Porter joins Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and Lennox Lewis on the broadcast, adding insights and analysis. Porter and Mancini will join hosts Chris Myers and Kate Abdo live on FOX Sports’ desk. Calling the action live on Saturday will be Lewis, Joe Goossen and Kenny Albert from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
 
Speaking of FOX, the company announced that Sunday’s Monster Energy Cup Series race from Phoenix drew 4.794 million viewers for a 5% rise over last year/s score, according to Nielsen. Through four Cup Series races, average viewership is now 6.343 million viewers, up 3%.
 
The NABC and its multimedia rightsholder Learfield IMG College announced an exclusive partnership with Stadium to broadcast the 2019 AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show. This year’s show will take place on April 7 at 7:30p, showcasing the college basketball award program, in addition to a chat with the NCAA National Championship Game head coaches, moderated by Stadium’s college basketball insider Jeff Goodman. The event is hosted by Bleacher Report and Turner Sports personality Taylor Rooks.
 
NBC Sports is reporting that Sunday programming from noon through night, which included a key Premier League match, the opening race of the INDYCAR season, an NHL “Star Sunday” matchup, and the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational set multiple viewership milestones. Premier League action posted a Total Audience Delivery average of 1.68 million viewers across all platforms – NBC, NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app, and Telemundo – to rank as the second most-watched live Premier League match in US history.  Coverage of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg averaged a TAD of 502,000 viewers making it the most-watched INDYCAR season opener in NBC Sports history and up 94% compared to NBCSN’s first race last season. A Bruins/Penguins matchup on NBCSN scored a TAD average of 733,000 viewers to rank as the most-watched NHL regular-season game on NBCSN since the season opener of the 2017-18 season. Finally, final round coverage of the Arnold Palmer Invitational drew a TAD of 3.1 million viewers on NBC and NBC Sports Digital, ranking as the second most-watched final round of the event since 2012.
 
NBC Sports debuted In the Shadow of the Kop, an exclusive, in-depth multiplatform series highlighting Liverpool’s unique connection to its supporters, in addition to its history, and return to form as one of England’s most dominant clubs. Roger Bennett traveled to Liverpool to report on and chronicle the club. Over the course of the next six weeks, NBC Sports will release two unique digital films each week across its digital platforms, including NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app and NBC Sports’ YouTube channel. Portions of each film will air during NBC Sports’ Premier League broadcasts on NBCSN.
 
Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the largest documentary festival in North America, announced the original documentary Willie has been selected by the festival, which receives more than 10,000 film submissions each year. On Monday, April 29, the documentary will make its world premiere at Hot Docs 2019 at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, telling the story of Willie O’Ree, who in 1958 became the first black man to play in the National Hockey League.
 
Olympic Channel and SportsMax announced a new partnership featuring both linear and digital programming across 22 Caribbean territories. SportsMax will broadcast over 700 hours of Olympic-related content under the Olympic Channel brand on its channels as well as the SportsMax and Digicel apps and websites including embedded video.

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s signed on as the presenting sponsor of Outdoor Channel’s original series The Brigade: Race to the Hudson, slated to premiere April 22 at 8p. Participating sponsors include: Golden Corral, Gorilla Glue, Sawyer Products, Shell Rotella and Cub Cadet.
 
 
DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

Vegas Stats & Information Network and BLOK SPORTS announced a partnership to launch a new and innovative bracket challenge for the 2019 March Madness college basketball tournament leveraging BLOK SPORTS’ blockchain technology. The 2019 Beat the Spread Challenge begins March 18, and sees players receive free credits in the form of the BLOK digital token – dubbed the VSiN token – which can be used to place simulated wagers on each game, including picking the team they think will beat the point spread.  Players will compete for a variety of prizes, including first prize of $10,000.
 
Meanwhile, Selection Sunday will see the launch of Sports Illustrated’s Realtime Brackets Challenge, allowing fans to switch their pick during live tournament games. Making a winning call sooner scores you maximum pool points and available points drop as the game clock runs, and last chance to switch is with four minutes left to play.
 
PlayOn! Sports and Pixellot announced a seven-year extension of their partnership to bring automated sports production to U.S. high school sports. Alon Werber, CEO of Pixellot, remarked “We’re pleased to continue our successful relationship with PlayOn! Sports and the NFHS Network. This long-term contract will enable thousands of high schools to produce sports content at scale, through the network. We’ve worked diligently on our automated production solution to ensure an engaging and professional viewing experience for kids, their parents and the entire community. The NBA G League inked a multi-year distribution deal with Dailymotion, the global video-sharing platform in a move that will see the platform become a primary host to the G League’s official channels, with plans to distribute video-on-demand (VOD) content from more than 1,300 games over the next two seasons.
 
Digital sports video distribution platform SendtoNews is announcing plans to distribute PGA TOUR LIVE Featured Holes coverage of the 12th and 17th holes during this week’s THE PLAYERS Championship. The live stream will be featured across Tribune Publishing properties with coverage running from tomorrow’s opening round through the final round on Sunday.

ESPN Events deepened its esports ties with the launch of the first-ever ESPN Collegiate Esports Championship, where hundreds of schools from across North America are competing in qualifiers hosted by Tespa and Collegiate StarLeague’s that will launch soon with the semi-final and championship action taking place in Houston from May 10-12 at the George R Brown Convention Center during Comicpalooza weekend. Titles will see players contend for Overwatch, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Hearthstone, StarCraft II and Heroes of the Storm as the first games to be announced as a part of the LAN Championship event. Tespa and Collegiate StarLeague will hold qualifying rounds for Blizzard’s games and Street Fighter V, respectively, all culminating at the Collegiate Esports Championship in May. The CEC will become Overwatch’s only collegiate championship, previously held at the Fiesta Bowl.
 
BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. and Twitch unveiled the roadmap for the return of the TEKKEN World Tour for 2019 with Twitch again tapped as the exclusive streaming destination for competitive gaming league and the managing partner for TEKKEN 7 league operations, circuit events, and content on a global scale. Entering its third tournament season, the TEKKEN World Tour will offer at least a $185,500 prize pool, with a $100,000 baseline purse for the TEKKEN World Tour Finals. The action begins on April 20 at MIXUP in Lyon, France then continues throughout the year with additional North American based stops in Georgia, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, Florida, Washington, California, and Toronto, Canada.
