PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
9 Story Media Group has entered into an agreement with Peacock Alley Entertainment to develop and co-produce Motel 51, a serialized science fiction drama aimed at a young adult and family audience. Written and created by Laura Kosterski (Producing Parker), the series will be executive produced by Brad Wright (Travelers, Stargate), Carrie Mudd (Travelers, Sanctuary), Vince Commisso (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) and Natalie Osborne (Angela’s Christmas).
The BBC’s Call the Midwife, which comes from Neal Street Productions and airs on PBS in the U.S., was renewed for seasons ten and eleven. Filming on season nine is about to commence, to air in 2020.
Nat Geo ordered a feature doc on the 2018 rescue of a Thai soccer team, from director Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September), producer John Battsek (Manhunt: The Story of Bin Laden), producer P.J. van Sandwijk (American Dharma) and executive producer Michael Lesslie (Little Drummer Girl). A Cave Rescue (wt) will chronicle the world of cave diving, as well as the community that saved the boys.
CBS All Access renewed original series No Activity for season three. Comedy is produced by CBS TV Studios in association with Funny or Die, Jungle and Gary Sanchez Productions.
FX and Scott Rudin are producing a pilot for Gone Hollywood, reports Deadline, a drama set at a talent agency in the 1980s.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Syndicated talker Tamron Hall will premiere on Monday, September 9, 2019. The show has been licensed to stations representing over 85% of the country, including 47 of the top 50 markets. “The premiere date is an easy one to remember, 9-9-19,” said exec producer Bill Geddie. “On that day everyone will learn what I already know, that Tamron Hall is the real thing we’ve been searching for in daytime talk.”

Netflix tips a hat to 1967-1973 sketch comedy series Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In with a special to be taped March 8 in Hollywood, with original cast member Lily Tomlin performing. U.S. advertising is expected to grow 7.6% in 2019, according to Standard Media Index. In January, Comcast and Google each had a 10% share of media spend, followed by 9% for Walt Disney, 8% for 21st Century Fox and CBS Corp., 4% for Facebook and Discovery and 3% for Viacom.

Following reports that Steven Spielberg is going to propose a rule change at April’s Academy Board of Governor’s meeting that would require Oscar nominees to have a theatrical run, making films like Netflix’s Roma ineligible, Netflix offered another point of view. “We love cinema,” tweeted Netflix Film. “Here are some things we also love: Access for people who can’t always afford, or live in towns with, theaters. Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time. Giving filmmakers more ways to share art. These things are not mutually exclusive.” Spielberg had told ITV News, “Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie.”
MotorTrend series Drift This debuts Wednesday, March 6, on the MotorTrendApp. Hosted by drifting pioneers Chris Forsberg and Ryan Tuerck, series explores how to make improbable vehicles drift (make a vehicle go through a turn sliding sideways). Using creative engineering, custom fabrication, and horsepower, Forsberg and Tuerck “combine professional racing knowledge with creative insanity.”
Spotify launched in India and reached one million users in under a week. While the service has licensing agreements with Sony Music and Universal for India, it has yet to strike a deal with Warner Music.

Intelligent edge platform Akamai announced enhancements aimed at helping businesses accelerate their cloud migration strategy. “Eighty-five percent of companies today have a hybrid cloud strategy, but many have begun to realize that the cloud brings significant challenges to security, operations, and cost management,” said Rick McConnell, President and General Manager of Akamai’s Web Division. “With enhancements to our platform, Akamai surrounds and extends client infrastructures, leveraging the edge and advanced security to alleviate cloud challenges.”
Pinterest is rolling out tools that offer consumers and brands a more personalized shopping experience. With Catalogs, brands can create Product Pins with updated prices and information from an online catalog, and consumers can shop specific retailers, get ideas related to what they’ve been saving and have more products to search.
Fifty-three percent of consumers said it’s important or very important to have a smartphone on hand while shopping for a car, according to AdColony’s Car Buying Survey. Top three reasons: comparing prices, researching models, and finding dealerships. Almost 60% of those surveyed said they were likely or very likely to visit a dealership after researching a car online.

Podcast start-up Luminary has snapped up big names for a lineup of over 40 shows, with creators including Conan O’Brien, Trevor Noah, Lena Dunham, and documentarian Alex Gibney. Existing podcasts, include Russell Brand’s Under the Skin, will move exclusively to Luminary. The Luminary app, $8/month ad-free, or free with ads, is slated to arrive by June.

ITV Studios and Motion Content Group’s format Love Island has been commissioned by Three in New Zealand, taking the total number of original commissions to 12. Love Island NZ will be produced by ITV Studios Australia, its first production for a New Zealand network.
UK’s Channel 5 signed a content partnership deal for its streaming service, My5, with HOT Telecommunication Systems, Israel’s multi-channel cable television company. The partnership marks the first foreign language content deal for the platform and includes a selection of four original Hebrew language drama series produced by HOT. All of the content will debut on My5 in spring of this year and will be subtitled in English.
Kew Media Distribution reports it has received unprecedented interest from broadcasters around the world to acquire Leaving Neverland, the Channel 4 and HBO co-production focused on Michael Jackson accusers. Through individual and pan-territory deals, more than 130 countries are set to air the two-part production.
Corus Entertainment is launching the first 24-hour Adult Swim channel in Canada on April 1. Series include Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken, Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories, and The Eric Andre Show, plus acquisitions Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, American Dad, and more.
