IN THE NEWS

The next season of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” will be its last on ITV. The game show’s upcoming season will also be the last with Jeremy Clarkson as host, following the backlash he faced since his controversial column was published in British tabloid The Sun in December, in which he said he dreams of the day when Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle will be “made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”

Prime Video delayed the “Citadel” trailer release following the fatal train crash in northern Greece on Tuesday evening that killed at least 36 people. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden star as spies whose memories have been wiped out. In previously released images, Chopra Jonas and Madden move through a luxury train compartment, ready for a fight. The first two episodes are still slated to premiere on April 28.

Fuse Media announced its 2023-24 Upfront strategy. At The Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing’s “Diverse Owned and Targeted Media GrowthFronts,” the Latino-owned entertainment company highlighted its expanded slate of DEI-focused channels. Javier Saralegui, the company’s newly appointed revenue officer, said, “This year’s Upfront is packed with original content that organically weaves in our mission of creating multiplatform destinations where everyone can see themselves represented.”

Adam Sandler will receive the first-ever King of Comedy award at this year’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Sandler will accept the Silver Blimp on the KCA stage at the Microsoft Theater this Saturday at 7p.

Polaris struck an exclusive deal with Allen Media Group’s HBCU GO. The Black-owned television network and digital platform will create content geared toward culture, music and news for HBCU GO, VOD and AMG properties including TheGrio. Byron Allen, founder, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group, said, “It’s important for us to showcase not only the amazing sports and news programming, but also the heartbeat of the HBCU and Black Experience – our culture.”

Reginald Hudlin and Byron Phillips signed a first-look non-scripted deal with Original Productions. The duo most recently teamed up with the production company on “Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy,” a documentary series from Amazon. Under the deal, Hudlin Entertainment and Phillips will expand the comedy docuseries, as well as develop and executive produce non-scripted series.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Netflix greenlit “Zero Day” starring Robert De Niro. The conspiracy thriller series from Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael S. Schmidt dissects how we can find truth in a world of crisis. De Niro will also executive produce.

Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”) will direct and executive produce the upcoming series “The Day of the Triffids.” The TV adaptation of the John Wyndham sci-fi novel of the same name is in the works at Amazon, with Angry Films to produce. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, predatory carnivorous plants called triffids start to kill off the last remaining humans – that is, until biologist Bill Masen steps in to lead the fight against the killer plants.

HGTV ordered eight more episodes of “Rico to the Rescue.” The new season of the freshman series that has attracted more than 11.8 million total viewers since its January 7 premiere is slated to air in early 2024. The network also picked up 12 additional episodes of “Married to Real Estate” for its mid-season renewal.

USA Network renewed “Barmageddon.” The celebrity game show hosted by Blake Shelton and Carson Daly was the network’s best series premiere in nearly three years in total viewers, and the best premiere in the network’s history for an unscripted series. Season two is slated to have more famous names participating in the competition.

Hulu Originals renewed its deal with American High. The streamer has released seven films with the comedy production company since 2019, including “Plan B” and “Crush,” with an upcoming eighth release, “Miguel Wants to Fight.” Jason Zaro will co-produce new films under the deal for Hulu.

Fulwell 73 and CBS Studios extended their first-look deal for another three years. The deal will include scripted, alternative and digital TV across broadcast, cable, streaming and other digital platforms.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

The second season of HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere” will premiere on April 23. Starring and executive produced by comedian and singer Bridget Everett, the seven-episode season follows a Kansan struggling to fit into the hometown mold.

FOX Nation will release the docuseries “Jussie Smollett: Anatomy of a Hoax” on March 13. The five-part docuseries will feature exclusive interviews with brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who were part of the plot to perpetrate a staged hate crime on Smollett in 2019. The streaming platform’s Executive Vice President John Finley said, “‘Anatomy of a Hoax’ takes a deep dive into a scam that reverberated through the worlds of entertainment, pop culture, and politics.”

“CNN News Central” will debut its new lineup in April. The network previously announced that John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner will anchor the 9a-12p news block in New York, and Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto will anchor the 1-4p news block in Washington, DC.

“Builder Brothers Dream Factory” will premiere on HGTV on March 26. Inspired by “Property Brothers” Drew and Jonathan Scott, the animated series from Sinking Ship Entertainment and Scott Brothers Entertainment will follow a pair of brothers who help to solve problems in their neighborhood. Drew Scott called the series “one of our most personal projects to date,” and Jonathan Scott added, “We were raised to believe that we can dream up any big idea, and there’s always a creative way to come together and solve any problem.”

“Las Pelotaris 1926” will premiere on March 10 on ViX+. Filmed in Mexico and Spain, the series tells the story of three Basque pelota players struggling to achieve their dreams in the 1920s. The original drama series created by Marc Cistaré stars Zuria Vega, Claudia Salas and María de Nati.

COMING UP

Insight TV will celebrate Women’s History Month with “Breakthrough: Women Changing the Game.” The series will showcase the resilience of female athletes in traditionally male-dominated sports, including NASCAR, Jockey and Formula 4. Millennial-focused global channel operator Insight TV and NEO Studios have teamed up to bring the six-part docuseries to audiences worldwide on March 6 at 9p on INFAST, which is available on Samsung TV Plus, Plex and Freevee.

“American Masters: Dr. Tony Fauci” premieres on PBS on March 21 at 8p. The documentary follows Dr. Fauci for two years for a behind-the-scenes look into his career in public health, from the AIDS crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amish production “The Confession Musical” will debut on UP Faith & Family. Based on the book series by New York Times bestselling author Beverly Lewis, “The Heritage of Lancaster County,” the performance will feature Chonda Pierce and John Schneider in the story of two worlds colliding as a young Amish woman searches for her birth mother. The musical will premiere tomorrow, March 3, on the streaming service.

CASTING

Bebe Neuwirth will reprise her role as Lilith in the “Frasier” sequel. Neuwirth will reunite with Jack Cutmore-Scott and Kelsey Grammer in the Paramount+ comedy series.

Kristen Bell will star in and executive produce an as-yet-untitled comedy series. Created and executive produced by Erin Foster, and executive produced by Steven Levitan (“Modern Family”), the show, based on Foster’s life, is the first series order for a 20th Television production at Netflix since the studio joined Disney.

Doug Bradley is the new Joe Chill. The “Hellraiser” star was cast as the “Gotham Knights” villain who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents, who now awaits execution. Bradley will appear in the role for the first time in episode 6 of the CW series.

Christine Horn and Sule Rimi will lead Freevee’s “Classified.” The coming-of-age series from Kagiso Lediga will follow Ella (Imani Pullum), a public school student in Oakland, CA, who evades incarceration by finishing her studies with her family in Johannesburg. Horn will star as Ella’s stepmother, and Rimi will play Ella’s father.

Grantham Coleman will star in Taylor Sheridan’s “Bass Reeves.” The “Rustin” actor joins Lauren E. Banks, Forrest Goodluck and Barry Pepper as a series regular in the Wild West story. Coleman will play Edwin Jones, a man with a promise for the future, according to the series description.

GOING GLOBAL

CBS Reality commissioned a 10-part series with Phoenix Television. The UK entertainment channel will commission the non-scripted limited series “Murder: Fight for the Truth” to tell the stories of heroes who have cracked murder cases. Each episode will delve into one criminal case, four from the UK and six from the US. The series will premiere on April 6 at 10p.

“Get It Beauty” is coming to the US. The Korean lifestyle series from Scott Sternberg Productions and CJ ENM focuses on the latest trends in fashion, fitness, food and wellness.
