IN THE NEWS

Big TV winners at the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards include Netflix’s “The Crown” for Best Drama Series; Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek” for Best Musical or Comedy; and Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” for Best Limited Series. For a complete list of winners, go here.

AMC Networks announced 2020 results, and once again streaming is the big headline. The company passes streaming subscriber targets, ending the year with more than 6 million subscribers across AMC+, Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now and ALLBLK, representing year-over-year aggregate subscriber growth of 157%. It’s not a matter of pleasing everyone, or “spend and spend in a gargantuan race for some subscriber number,” said said Josh Sapan, President and CEO, on an earnings call. Instead, the company’s services offer “discreet areas of editorial interest.” Fourth quarter net revenues decreased 0.6%, or $5 million, to $780 million over the fourth quarter of 2019. The decrease in net revenues reflected a decrease of 3.0% at National Networks and an increase of 7.5% at International and Other. Operating income was $81 million, an increase of 95.1%, or $40 million, versus the prior comparable period.

Netflix is a leader in gender equality in leading roles, according to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, comparing representation on the streamer in 2019 versus 2018. Over half (52%) of films and series had women as co-leads. 48.4% of films had women as leads/co-leads, versus 41% of top-grossing films in 2018-19. 54.5% of series featured women leads/co-leads, compared to 50.8% of the US population. And 2020 should be even better, said Head of Global TV at Netflix, Bela Bajaria, pointing to shows like “Bridgerton,” “Gentefied” and “Never Have I Ever.” “We have a lot of titles and we have a commitment to improve every year,” said Bajaria.

Former NFL player turned sports analyst Emmanuel Acho will step into Chris Harrison’s shoes to host “Bachelor: After the Final Rose.” Acho, the author of bestseller Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man, will speak with Matt James, the first Black bachelor, as well as the dating show’s three finalists. Harrison stepped aside from the show after making racially insensitive comments (for which he apologized). “Rose” airs Monday, March 15 at 10p.

E.W. Scripps reported Local Media revenue was up 43% in 4Q20 and up 22% (adjusted combined) for 2020. That includes $265 million of political advertising, which was record revenue on a same-station basis, and increased retransmission revenue by 31%. “Having completed the acquisition of ION in early January, Scripps is now a full-scale television company and the largest holder of broadcast spectrum in the country,” said Scripps President and CEO Adam Symson. “Our new Scripps Networks division is made up of seven powerful TV networks that each reaches nearly every American, through free over-the-air television, over the top platforms and on cable and satellite …We move forward now as a high-free-cash flow television company with two highly profitable operating divisions that position us to create significant value today and capture even greater value as a leader in the future of television.”

ByteDance agreed to pay a $92 million settlement to US users of TikTok who allege the app failed to get their consent to collect data, a violation of an Illinois biometric privacy law, which allows lawsuits against companies that harvest consumer data without consent. “While we disagree with the assertions, rather than go through lengthy litigation, we’d like to focus our efforts on building a safe and joyful experience for the TikTok community,” said TikTok in a statement.

As it did for the Golden Globes on Sunday, Haystack News will provide free streaming channels aggregating coverage from its hundreds of content providers covering the Grammy Awards and Oscars. “More than just the preferred destination for breaking news and analysis, Haystack News is growing its portfolio and viewing options for entertainment news content,” said Daniel Barreto, Co-Founder and CEO of Haystack TV.

TECH TALK

Facebook has launched a campaign aimed at helping people understand how personalized ads can help them discover new things. “Good Ideas Deserve to be Found” spots began airing on TV, digital and radio last week. Facebook said its initiative is intended to help struggling small businesses, and will waive fees for small businesses selling with Checkout on Shops through 2021. The move comes ahead of a change Apple is making to its iOS system that offers Apple device users an easy way to op-out of being targeted by advertisers.

Down Under, Facebook struck agreements with Australian news organizations Private Media, Schwartz Media and Solstice Media, after passage of a law that requires and codifies tech company negotiations to pay for news content.
