TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Nickelodeon will air new CG-animated series Alvinnn!!! And the Chipmunks on 70-plus channels around the globe, excluding North America and Brazil beginning in early 2015. The series, created by Janice Karman, and produced by Bagdasarian Productions and OuiDO! Productions, has been picked up for two seasons and marks the return of the franchise to TV after 20 years. The property is "loved by fans around the world so we’re delighted to bring this re-imagined series to a whole new generation of kids," said Jules Borkent, SVP, global acquisitions and international programming, for Nickelodeon globally, excluding the U.S. and France.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

PBS Kids will engage in potty talk Tuesday, March 4, with a special ep of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, "Prince Wednesday Goes to the Potty/Daniel Goes to the Potty." The show aims to help young children feel comfortable stopping what they’re doing to take a bathroom break when nature calls.

Nickelodeon goes down a rabbit hole with the primetime special Dora in Wonderland, premiering Monday, March 10, at 7p. In the hour long special, Dora, Boots and friends travel through Wonderland to find Abuela’s kitties after they run through a magic mirror. Guest voices include Mel Brooks (Mad Hatter), Alan Cumming (Rabbit) and Jewel (Cheshire Cat).

Inside Edition’s fabulous Megan Alexander will return to emcee the third annual Cynopsis Kids !magination + People Awards, June 11 in NYC. Call for entries is now open. Hub Network is twinning. The net will premiere new acquisition Sister Sister, starring Tia and Tamera Mowry Monday, March 3, at 7p ET/4 PT. Episodes from the classic series will air weekdays at 7p and 7:30p ET/4p and 4:30p PT. Hub acquired all six seasons of the show, which is distributed by CBS Television Distribution.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Cartoon Network sets an April debut for its latest online-to-TV transformation Clarence. The toon, which has amassed huge online fan base, was created by Skyler Page and is about a high-spirited boy named, surprise, Clarence. The series is the latest order to result from Cartoon’s animated short pilot development, joining Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa.

Lawmakers, stakeholders and others convened yesterday at the School Privacy Zone summit in DC to discuss effective ways to safeguard student privacy in schools that use education technology for teaching and learning. The summit is sponsored by Common Sense Media, in partnership with The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands. Among speakers: U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan; Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass); Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill; Joel Klein, CEO of Amplify; Cameron Evans, CTO of U.S. Education at Microsoft; Katherine Varker, Associate General Counsel, McGraw-Hill Education. The discussion focused on principles and practices around the types of technology used by schools and districts, the kind of student information that is collected, and the benefits and risks to collecting such data. "At Common Sense Media, we believe that education technology, used wisely, has the potential to transform learning for all children. At the same time, critical to maximizing the benefits of technology in schools is protecting each student’s private information," said James P. Steyer, founder/CEO of Common Sense Media.

Can ogres have British accents? DreamWorks Animation is bringing Shrek and friends to London via a themed attraction on the South Bank, reports the Los Angeles Times. Set to open next summer, Shrek’s Far Away Adventure, created in conjunction with Merlin Entertainment, will feature Shrek, Fiona, Puss in Boots and other characters from the franchise.

Nominees are in for the 27th annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, to be hosted by Mark Wahlberg on Saturday, March 29, at 8p. Among the contenders for an orange blimp: Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock, Pharrell Williams, Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, Mila Kunis, Steve Carell, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, One Direction, Miley Cyrus, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Justin Timberlake, Pitbull, Bruno Mars, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr., Jennette McCurdy, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez. Beginning this week kids will be able to cast their votes in 22 categories at Nick.com and the Nick app.

Archie Comics is off and running on its new line of young adult novels with Archie: A Rock & Roll Romance, due out this week. Follow-up Diary of a Girl Next Door: Betty, will drop July 16.

GAMES & APPS

Breakthrough Entertainment and Kids’ CBC are launching a free five-set ebook series based on preschool program The Adventures of Napkin Man! The show, created by Little Airplane, runs weekdays on Kids’ CBC and is programmed to help children better understand their day-to-day emotions.

LICENSING

HIT Entertainment is cross-promoting with squeezable fruit pouch purveyor Buddy Fruits for Thomas & Friends branded fruit products and a sweepstakes. The Buddy Fruits line will feature Thomas & Friends artwork along with info about the sweepstakes, which will grant two winners a Thomas & Friends total room makeover, with a value of $2000 each.

Ravensburger is launching a new collection of puzzles starring characters from Disney’s Planes and classic Disney-Pixar films including Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Monsters University and Monsters, Inc. … In other Disney licensing news, Wooky Entertainment is adding a line of Style Me Up! fashion sketch books featuring Disney characters. Designed for girls 8 and up, the books will arrive at retail this spring.
