The Television Academy announced several changes that will bring more nominees – and winners – to the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards table. The Miniseries and Movie category will be split into two separate categories (they were consolidated three years ago); reality shows will be split into Structured (i.e. Mythbusters, Antiques Roadshow) and Unstructured (Pawn Stars, Duck Dynasty) Programs; the Voice-Over category will be split between Narrator and Character performances; the number of nominees for writing, directing and performing in the Miniseries/Movie category will go from five to six; the “2% rule” for close votes will allow for the possibility of seven nominees in the comedy and drama series categories, and Technical/Camerawork/Video for Series will be classified as an area award with the possibility of one or more than one award. This year’s award ceremony airs Monday, August 25 at 8p on NBC.

IN THE NEWS

NBC is bringing back Heroes (2006-2010) as a 13-episode event miniseries for 2015. “Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often, and we thought it was time for another installment,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke, adding that creator Tim Kring is onboard. The production “will appropriately be shrouded in secrecy,” said Salke, “but we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping in.” Heroes Reborn will be introduced as a digital series ahead of the miniseries launch.

The crowd-funded Veronica Mars movie will be available to rent or buy on March 14, the same day it’s released in theaters. According the Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. skirted around the usual 90-day window policy by renting 260 AMC screens for the theatrical release. Said creator Rob Thomas on Kickstarter, “The most important goal was always to make sure that every backer would be able to see the movie as soon as possible.”

Brooke Burke-Charvet announced via Twitter that she’s been bounced as co-host of Dancing with the Stars. “Weird day… Shocking pre-season elimination #DWTS… ME.” Burke-Charvet was the winner of season seven of the ABC dance competition and joined as co-host with Tom Bergeron for season ten. Brooke-less season 18 launches Monday, March 17.

NBC issued a straight-to-series order for 13 eps Shades of Blue, starring and exec produced by Jennifer Lopez. The cop drama, from Universal Television, Nuyorican Productions and Ryan Seacrest Productions, is slated for the 2015-16 season.

Amazon is now including preroll ads ahead of Amazon Prime Instant Video “pilot season” programs (Amazon users help decide which pilots make it to series), starting with Geico. As the presenting sponsor, the car insurance giant has a banner on the landing page and 15-second ads before non-children’s shows. “We’re testing and learning,” Amazon VP, global advertising sales Lisa Utzschnieder told AdAge. “It’s pretty early days, and we’re looking at all video formats. We’re focused on creating a great experience for our customers.”

Dan Rather will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Banff World Media Festival in June. Said the veteran CBS News anchor, “For one who began his life’s work in the print and early electronic era of journalism, to now receive special recognition from an international organization on the cutting-edge of the digital age is both an honor and a humbling experience.” Rather is currently host of Dan Rather Reports on AXS-TV, Mondays at 8p.

Hulk Hogan is coming home. The wrestler/actor/singer/reality star will appear on WWE‘s Monday Night Raw tonight, coinciding with the launch of the WWE’s streaming network; later that night, Hogan will appear on WWE Network‘s WWE Raw Backstage Pass. He’ll also host WrestleMania 30 on Sunday, April 6. Hogan, who started on the WWE in 1979, moved to WCW competitor TNA in 2009.

First Lady Michelle Obama will speak at a screening of Lifetime‘s The Trip to Bountiful today at 4p, as part of Black History Month. The TV movie, based on the Broadway revival of the Horton Foote play, premieres Saturday, March 8 at 8p.

Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank took to the airwaves Friday to address the criticism of the U.S. Olympic speed skating team’s “Mach 39” uniforms, made by Under Armour, which were replaced with an older model after the U.S. failed to medal in their first six events. Plank told the CBS This Morning co-hosts, “We gave the athletes every advantage… It didn’t translate to the success we wanted but you know, there’s lots of things that lead to that.” Plank added that Under Armour is “already looking forward,” with a new eight-year deal to renew its sponsorship.
