02/23/16: Bellator battle sets heavyweight mark; Which ads scored at Daytona?; UFC hits the Three

Good morning. It’s Tuesday February 23, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Spike TV’s Bellator 149 battle set all-time highs for the promotion, with the Friday card delivering an average of 2 million viewers to the 3-hour fight card and Kimbo Slice’s three-round brawl with Dada 5000 averaging 2.5 million viewers, according to the network. That easily tops the previous record for the network, which saw the Kimbo Slice/Ken Shamrock battle last June nab 1.6 million. The event also ranks as the top telecast of the day among Men 18-34 across all of television, generating a 2.3 rating in the demo. Meanwhile, the Bellator 149 livestream drew 124% more views than the previous high. 

ON THE AIR

Groupings and match schedules for the 2016 Copa America Centenario are official, with FOX Sports and Univision Deportes set to carry the historic tournament from June 3-26. With the US designated to Group A with Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay, the men’s team will open against Colombia on June 3 from Santa Clara. Other highlighted group matches include a rematch of the 2015 Copa America final between Argentina/Chile in Group D on June 6 and Jamaica/Mexico on June 9. The final will be played at MetLife Stadium on June 26.

NFL Network released more details about its upcoming 2016 NFL Combine programming plans, which (as mentioned in yesterday’s issue) begin on Wednesday and workouts starting on Friday at 9a. Overall, NFL Media features will see a roster of 23 to cover the event, including Mike Mayock, Charles Davis and Daniel Jeremiah with Rich Eisen anchoring coverage of the on-field workouts. Combine Primetime will run Friday through Monday at 8p with a recap of each day’s action and hosted by Chris Rose. Tech upgrades are set to include: NFLN-Focus Camera Technology  “a high-speed camera that allows moving targets to stay in the camera frame longer, highlighting the smallest details”; Simulcam Camera Technology; and Cablecam Technology  offering a “unique overhead view which gives viewers a new way of following each drill and a more intimate feeling that they are present in Indianapolis.”

Elsewhere on the ratings front over the weekend:
The Cavaliers/Thunder battle on Sunday scored a 2.7 on ABC on Sunday in Nielsen overnights, marking the second best ESPN/ABC overnight of the ’15-16 season (excluding X-Mas).
NBCSN notched its most-watched non-Olympic telecast ever for US Soccer’s Women’s National Team, drawing 329,000 viewers for their game versus Trinidad & Tobago on Friday.

With an eye toward driving revenue for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey 2016, the NHL and the NHLPA are tapping the services of Lagardere Sports to oversee leading sponsorship sales in Europe. The global sports marketing agency operates in 25 countries worldwide and now has the ability to sell such commercial assets as use of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 marks along with those of the participating teams, group player rights and digital dasherboards for the European broadcasts of the entire tournament as well as on-ice and in-arena branding assets for the four exhibition games in Russia, Finland, the Czech Republic and Sweden.

Major League Soccer and TAG Heuer inked a long-term partnership that makes the luxury sports watch brand the official watch and official timekeeper of MLS. The deal includes the Professional Referee Organization and will see TAG Heuer act as the official timekeeper of US Soccer. During MLS games, PRO referees will wear a TAG Heuer Connected Watch and every MLS referee will sport the TAG Heuer logo branded on their uniform, and the company will provide and be visible on the substation board used on the sideline.

Churchill Downs Racetrack entered a multi-year agreement with sports merchandise retailer Fanatics to exclusively operate both online and on-site retail for the Kentucky Derby race weekend, starting with the 2016 event. Fanatics will expand the merchandise selection and increase the on-site footprint at Churchill Downs via additional retail locations around the track as well as launch a shopping experience across online, mobile and on-site retail locations for all horseracing fans. The agreement also includes a licensing component, which will allow Fanatics to create both collectibles and apparel, including an assortment of exclusive Kentucky Derby merchandise

DIGITAL & STREAMING

BBC Three is hitting the octagon and will offer MMA coverage through a new deal with UFC. The partnership will see BBC Three serve fans with live commentary and post-fight video through The Daily Drop as well as via BBC Three’s live page through BBC Three’s social media accounts beginning immediately with UFC Fight Night set for Saturday. Alongside BBC Three’s live and social media coverage BBC Three will produce short films and content on MMA and UFC athletes including Conor McGregor, Holy Holm, Ronda Rousey and Michael Bisping.

espnW unveiled full plans for its inaugural IMPACT25 Gala presented by Northwestern Mutual on Thursday, with the espnW Woman of the Year presented by Northwestern Mutual, set to be revealed at the Gala.Entertainment includes singer Grace Potter with ESPN’s Hannah Storm on board as host. The Madison Square Garden Company promoted Joel Fisher to the newly created position of Executive Vice President of Marquee Events and Operations where he will take a larger role in spearheading high profile, special initiatives, while continuing to oversee the company’s college basketball and boxing events, as well as other live sporting events such as bull riding, wrestling, and tennis.
 
Mobile U.S. college intramural and recreational sports platform MOKO Social Media named Shripal Shah, who previously served as MOKO’s COO, as the company’s interim CEO. Prior to serving as MOKO’s COO, Shah served as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of the Washington Redskins and Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Strategist for Catalyst Public Relations.

Longtime ESPN PR fixture Rob Tobias, was named Senior Vice President, East Coast Operations & Business Development at CMPR & CMPR Events. Tobias will oversee all accounts and business for the newly established CMPR East Coast Division and offer support to CMPR’s portfolio of special events and television shows. Tobias departed ESPN a year ago after three decades at the company.
