Nat Geo will air a special episode tonight about the life of Pastor Jamie Coots. Featured in the net’s Snake Salvation, Coots was bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service Saturday and later died. “While it may be hard for some to understand the choices he made due to his deeply held convictions, one cannot help but admire his dedication and bravery,” said David Lyle, CEO of National Geographic Channels. “We wanted to air this episode as a way to give perspective to the world-wide discussion his death has caused.” Snake Salvation: They Shall Take Up Serpents airs at 10p.
A federal judge in Utah granted a preliminary injunction Wednesday barring Aereo from operating in six states, ruling that Fox Broadcasting was likely to succeed on the merits of its copyright claim. “This is a significant win for both broadcasters and content owners,” said Fox in a statement. “This injunction will prohibit Aereo from stealing our broadcast signal in Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Montana.” The judge also granted a stay pending the Supreme Court cast, scheduled to begin April 22.
The Voice coach CeeLo Green announced on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that he will not be returning to the NBC singing competition. “I’m not coming back at all,” said Green. “I just don’t want to wear out my welcome there.” While Green was not scheduled to be a coach for this season, he has appeared on four past seasons. Usher and Shakira, who replaced Green and Christina Aguilera for season four but not season five, return with Adam Levine and Blake Shelton for season six premiering Monday, February 4 at 8p.
HLN announced a slate of programs designed to “debunk the myth that the world of social media is only about videos of cats riding skateboards,” said EVP and GM Albie Hecht. In development is game show Keywords; I Can Haz News Toons, featuring caricatures and cartoons; One.Click.Away, offering the stories behind odd online listings; Vacation Hunters, a travel competition incorporating viewer tweets and Videocracy, a trending topics countdown. And an app: #What’sYourFomo (Fear of Missing Out).
During this week’s American Idol live shows (Tuesday and Wednesday at 8p), Fox made it harder for fans to skip certain commercials, with live behind-the-scenes footage from the stage and judge’s table airing alongside the ads airing during four ad breaks.
Veteran news journalist Soledad O’Brien will host and co-exec produce Nat Geo event Live From Space, the net announced Wednesday. O’Brien, currently a contributor to Al Jazeera America, will broadcast live from Mission Control in Houston as the program literally circles the globe, airing in the U.S. and 170 other countries Friday, March 14 at 8p.
Country music net CMT wants to rope in new talent with a casting website. Submissions can be made here for anyone wanting to flaunt their “country swagger”; VP of casting Zena Van Ackeren will serve as administrator for the site.
ITV continues its acquisitions spree with the announcement Wednesday that it has acquired a majority stake in independent producer DiGa Vision (Teen Wolf), launched in 2011 by former MTV execs Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley. “They have developed a brilliant understanding of pop culture and really know what appeals to the key teenage and young adult demographic – which is supported by their online, mobile and social media strategy,” said Paul Buccieri, managing director, ITV Studios International and president and CEO, ITV Studios US Group.
Starz tapped filmmaker David Michod (Animal Kingdom) to direct original ballet drama series Flesh and Bone, from Breaking Bad writer/exec producer Moira Walley-Beckett. The drama, focusing on a troubled young ballet dancer, begins filming in spring 2014.
Hallmark Channel original series Signed, Sealed, Delivered, about four postal detectives who track down recipients of undeliverable mail, premieres Sunday, April 20 at 8p. The Muse Entertainment production in association with MoonWater Productions was created by Martha Williamson (Touched by an Angel).
NBC Sports‘ documentary recounting the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding figure skating drama will air Sunday, February 23 at 7p, the 20th anniversary of the 1994 Winter Olympics women’s skating competition. The show will include archival footage, as well as interviews with Kerrigan and Harding.
Sportsman Channel‘s MeatEater plunks actors/comedians Joe Rogan (Fear Factor) and Bryan Callen (MADtv) somewhere they’ll need a sense of humor: freezing Wisconsin on opening day of deer hunting season. Part one of the ep airs tonight, February 20 at 8p, concluding Thursday, February 27 at 8p.
Smithsonian documentary Treblinka: Hitler’s Killing Machine follows a forensic investigator and her team as they uncover information about the notorious death camp. Part of the net’s “Women in Science” block, the show premieres Saturday, March 29 at 8p.
Mad Dog: Inside the Secret World of Muammar Gaddafi offers an in-depth look at the tyrannical regime of the Libyan dictator. The 90-minute doc premieres Friday, April 11 at 9p on Showtime.
Gay-focused net Here TV announced the premiere of its first original sitcom, From Here On OUT. Juliet Mills (Nanny and the Professor) and Suzanne Whang (House Hunters) are among the stars of the series, bowing Friday, March 28.
Getting On is getting a sophomore run on HBO. The net ordered six more eps of the hospital comedy starring Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) and Niecy Nash (Reno 911), which ended its first critically acclaimed run in December.
TLC brings back a second season of America’s Worst Tattoos with back-to-back eps on Thursday, March 27 at 10p. Bad ink includes an Ace Ventura stamp and a pink elephant.
Medical documentary series Sydney ER returns to Discovery Fit & Health for a second season on Friday, March 7 at 9p. The premiere episode of the Eyeworks Australia production chronicles the case of a hip hop artist who was stabbed in the chest.
Season three of Bravo‘s Million Dollar Listing New York launches Wednesday, April 2 at 9p. Season two of the real estate reality show averaged 1.4 million total viewers, up 23 percent from its first go-round. The net’s Married to Medicine comes back for season two on Sunday, April 6 at 9p, after racking up over 1.9 million total viewers during its first run.
BBC America‘s Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan returns for season two on Tuesday, March 25 at 10p. The adventure series will anchor the net’s new “BBC Earth” programming block, debuting Tuesday, March 11 at 9p with two-part special 24 Hours on Earth, followed by a season one retrospective special, Wildest Things with Dominic Monaghan at 10p.
Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix) has been cast as a sadistic gangster boss in Fox drama project Gotham, based on DC Comics characters. Ben McKenzie stars as Detective James Gordon.
Debra Messing (Will & Grace) will star in NBC pilot The Mysteries of Laura. The drama from Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions and Kapital Entertainment is based on a Spanish series about a female homicide detective.
Judd Hirsch (Taxi) will co-star in ABC pilot Forever, as the best friend of an immortal medical examiner, from Lin Pictures in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow) will star in Fox hip hop drama Empire, reports Variety. The Butler’s Lee Daniels will direct, and Danny Strong write.
Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) will star in ABC pilot Selfie, about a self-obsessed twentysomething.
Wendell Pierce (The Wire) joins season two of Showtime drama Ray Donovan, in the recurring role of a down-on-his-luck parole officer.
Ryan McPartlin (Passions) will appear on new USA series Playing House as a hunky officer. The Universal Cable Productions show premieres this spring.
Raycom Media’s America Now will go off the air after the current season. The ITV Studios America-produced news magazine, hosted by Leeza Gibbons and Bill Rancic, launched in 2010.
Two-time Oscar nominee (For the Boys, The Rose) Bette Midler will perform on the Oscars for the first time. ABC awards show airs Sunday, March 2 at 8p.
Zodiak Rights picked up worldwide distribution rights, excluding the U.S., U.K. and Ireland, for The Day They Dropped the Bomb, in production for ITV and Smithsonian Channel. The documentary, casting light on the tragedy in Hiroshima, is slated to run in advance of the 70th anniversary of the day the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6.
A&E is developing a drama set in the world of biblical fallen angels, reports Deadline. The 36 comes from Immortals writers Charley & Vlas Parlapanides and producer Michael London.
PopSugar and Core Media struck a deal to develop scripted and nonscripted projects targeted to PopSugar’s demo of women 18-40, in all platforms and channels. Core Media will manage the joint TV projects, with PopSugar assigned online duty.
UK.’s Arrow Media announced a commission from BBC TWO for Jumbo the plane that changed the world. A co-production with Smithsonian Channel and Discovery Canada, the documentary will air on BBC TWO and Discovery Canada, and on Smithsonian in the U.S. as 747: The Jumbo Revolution.

NBC Nightly News is reaping the benefits of the net’s Olympics coverage. Airing from Sochi, the news last week hit a nine-year high, averaging 11.61 million viewers – improving even on the numbers earned for NBC Olympics years 2012 and 2010.
Modern Family hit new highs in syndication the week of February 3 with 5.2 in HH and 3.3 in A18-49, 27 percent and 38 percent growth, respectively, versus premiere week.
Syndication’s two top talkers, Dr. Phil and Live with Kelly & Michael, also hit rating highs. Dr. Phil (4.1) scored its highest rating in five years, up 24 percent versus last year. Live (3.6) had its best rating since November 2011 (excluding the final week of Live with Regis and Kelly), a 29 percent boost year over year.
Order in the court: Judge Judy had its best rating (8.6) in eleven years, up 15 percent versus the same week last year.
The Sunday, February 16 cable premiere of Jesse Stone: No Remorse, starring Tom Selleck, was Hallmark Movie Channel‘s most-watched telecast ever among W25-54 (147,000), A25-54 (255,000), HH (902,000) and P2+ (1.16 million), and part of HMC’s highest day ever in network history, seen by more than 1.5 million unduplicated viewers P2+.
Monday A18-49 Analysis: NBC delivered the most A18-49 viewers with 5.6/15, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. The Olympics gave NBC 5.2/15 at 8p, followed by 2.2/6 for ABC’s The Bachelor. The Games ticked up to 6.0/16 at 9p, versus 2.3/6 for The Bachelor. At 10p the Oympics drew 5.8/17 for NBC, followed by 1.7/5 for ABC’s Castle.
