Viacom CEO Bob Bakish informed shareholders at a meeting that “a new strategic vision and framework” would be unveiled on Thursday, when financial results for 4Q16 come out. While he said other companies “would kill for our brand,” Bakish acknowledged, “some of our networks need better ratings, and we will get them.”
Fox News’ election year windfall and baseball helped revenue at 21st Century Fox rise 4 percent in 3Q16, with Television Segment revenues up 11.7 percent from the same period in 2015. “Our record-breaking post-season baseball run underscores the immense value of our sports programming, as well as the broader competitive advantage we have built through our other leadership positions in entertainment and news,” executive chairmen Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch said in a joint statement.
Bravo is unveiling a brand refresh today, tied to the debut of its new scripted drama, Imposters. In addition to a new, cleaner logo, changes include a “bright and fun” gender neutral color palette, and the end of the “By Bravo” tagline. Seven years after the net last changed its look, the goal is to “reflect our growth and how we’ve evolved.”
Dish TV has launched a “Tuned In To You” campaign aimed at combating low customer satisfaction with pay-TV. “Customers just want to be heard in an industry that has forsaken its ability to listen,” said Erik Carlson, Dish president and COO. “‘Tuned In To You’ is more than a marketing slogan. It’s a company-wide rallying cry and a long-term business philosophy.” The initiative includes TV spots featuring a “spokeslistener,” immersive training of corporate employees to gain practical experience with customers, and feedback forms across every Dish.com web page. Dish lost upwards of 420,000 customers during the first three quarters of 2016.
Nextstar is beefing up its Washington news bureau with the hires of a bureau chief, an executive producer and three additional reporters, for its 171 stations in 100 markets. Media General, purchased last month by Nexstar for $4.6 billion, already had a five-person bureau in place there.
Raycom Media owned stations WALB-TV in Albany, Georgia, and WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi raised more than $585,000 to help people affected by recent deadly tornadoes. “When our communities are in need, Raycom Media stations respond,” said Raycom Media President and CEO Pat LaPlatney.

The Kremlin took issue with Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly’s characterization of Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a killer” during his pre-Super Bowl interview with President Donald Trump. “We consider such words from the Fox TV company to be unacceptable and insulting,” a Kremlin spokesman told reporters on Monday. “We would prefer to get an apology from such a respected company.” (During the talk with O’Reilly, Trump responded to the killer comment by saying, “What, do you think our country’s so innocent?”)
It appears Sean Spicer can take a joke. Asked on Fox & Friends about Melissa McCarthy’s portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live, the White House press secretary said of the skewering, “It was cute, it’s funny,” and “part of American culture.” Though he also admitted he’d prefer to talk about the issues.
About a half hour after CNN released a poll on Monday that indicated most Americans oppose Trump’s executive order on travel ban, the president tweeted, “Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting.”

CNN Brass on those emails.” Or not – CNN Communications wrote back, “@KellyannePolls was offered to SOTU on Sunday by the White House. We passed. Those are the facts.”

National total day ad sales for Super Bowl Sunday on Fox hit over $500 million, according to iSpot.tv. That includes revenue from four extra spots that aired during overtime: Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Sprint’s “Car” ad, which had aired earlier in the game, as well as new ads for Proactiv and SoFi, which also ran postgame. Despite the fact that a Super Bowl had never gone into overtime, Fox had negotiated just-in-case overtime ad spots, reports Adweek.
The Super Bowl broadcast had 51 minutes and 30 seconds of advertising and promos, making it the second most cluttered ever, reported Kantar Media, with ads taking up 23 percent of the broadcast (versus 21 percent in NFL regular season game). Anheuser-Busch InBev was the parent company with the most ad time (3:30 minutes), while auto was the lead category, with 8 spots and 7 minutes of ad time.
Bai Brands’ Super Bowl commercial, featuring Christopher Walken and Justin Timberlake, topped TiVo’s list of most engaging commercials, based on retention compared to overall program viewership. Kia ranked second, followed by It’s a 10 Haircare, T-Mobile, Honda and Anheuser-Busch.
TVision, which measures in room attention to TV ads with computer vision technology, ranked Hyundai the top ad, followed by Twentieth Century Fox, Skittles, Busch Beer, GoDaddy and Snickers.
McCann New York’s “Bad Romance” ad for National Geographic was chosen as winner of the “Super Clio,” an initiative from the Clio Awards that determines the Super Bowl’s best spot as chosen by a panel of creative leaders. “This spot was an incredible opportunity for us to reach the largest TV audience of the year and also a way to reintroduce our brand philosophy to push boundaries, go further and be pioneering in everything we do,” said Jill Cress, CMO, National Geographic Partners. “It allowed us to show a broader audience that we can take a topic like Albert Einstein and make it relevant, timely and create a global conversation around our series Genius, and the National Geographic brand in general.”

Individual episodes and seasons of HBO content will join FandangoNOW’s catalog, including Game of Thrones, Girls, Insecure, The Night Of, and more. The on demand video service is distributed on an install base of over 100 million devices.
Snapchat is less social media than “reality TV, starring people you know,” suggests an article in the Wall Street Journal, noting that with clips strung together to make stories that often last several minutes, users get the “lean back” experience of watching TV, versus the “lean forward” feel of participating in social media. David Bernath, GM of Comedy Central, a launch partner on the first version of Snapchat’s Discover section, called the content “the millennial skinny bundle.” The WSJ piece also notes similarities in the business models for Snapchat and TV, with video ads that look like television commercials.
ZDFneo will serve as a co-production partner with SAM Productions for crime thriller Below the Surface. ZDFneo is the digital channel of German public broadcaster ZDF, aimed at audience age 25 to 49.
