IN THE NEWS

Fox News Channel’s Megyn Kelly has been added to the post-Super Bowl live broadcast of CBS’s Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Sunday, February 7. The target of Donald Trump tweets joins guests Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Will Ferrell and comedy duo Key & Peele

The Late Late Show with James Corden has a special post-Super Bowl show, too. Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine guest, with Elton John joining Corden for Carpool Karaoke and a tailgate party taking place outside the studio. Plus “surprises.” CBS broadcast airs at (approximately) 11:35p.

Dick Wolf signed a new overall deal with NBCUniversal that extends his relationship with NBC through 2020 – but it won’t end there if NBC can help it. Robert Greenblatt made no secret of his appreciation for the iconic producer’s contribution. “Dick Wolf is a without a doubt one of the greatest producers in the history of dramatic television,” said the NBC Entertainment chairman. “The Law & Order legacy would have been enough to set him apart from all the rest, but the Chicago franchise now kicks him into the stratosphere. He has been a defining voice of NBC for over a generation, and he is most welcome at this company forever.” The net also renewed Law & Order: SVU, and picked up season two of Chicago P.D.

It’s official: comScore’s acquisition of Rentrak is complete. “This merger brings together two great entrepreneurial companies that invented their respective fields and their respective trusted currencies,” said Serge Matta, CEO of comScore. “Both have been driven to create innovative technology platforms that use massive data scale to measure increasingly fragmented consumer behavior.” In the U.S., ComScore will measurebehavior on more than 260 million desktop screens, 160 million mobile phone screens, 95 million tablet screens, 40 million television screens and 120 million video-on-demand screens. The deal was announced in September.

Face the Nation anchor John Dickerson will again host CBS’s GOP presidential debate, on Saturday, February 13 at 9p, this time joined by panelists Major Garrett, CBS News Chief White House Correspondent, and the Wall Street Journal’s Kimberly Strassel. The net is also offering extensive coverage before, during and after the event via CBSN, including a stream of the debate with Google Trends data and a curated Twitter stream.

A letter from Fox Networks chairman and CEO Peter Rice alerted staff that as part of a reorganization, some employees would be offered “generous benefit packages” if they voluntarily resigned, effective in May. Rice pointed out that while the company is basking in the success right now of Grease: Live, The X-Files, the NFC Championship and its partnership with National Geographic, “This is the right thing to do for our business because although technology is rapidly changing our world, the global hunger for our brands and content will continue unabated and making the right decisions now will provide our company with many exciting opportunities for continued growth and success.”

The NFL is expanding Thursday Night Football in 2016 and 2017, continuing its partnership with CBS while adding NBC as a partner. Each net will broadcast five Thursday Night games, for total of ten, up from eight last year. Games will be simulcast on NFL Network. The NFL is also “in active discussions” with potential partners for OTT streaming rights.

Bravo ordered season 14 of Top Chef. Makes sense, however you slice it: the cooking competition is averaging 1.8 million total viewers and 1.2 million among P25-54, up 5 percent and 6 percent versus last season, per Nielsen.

ESPN is hoping to score with a morning show. SportsCenter: AM launches Monday, February 8 at 7a, the day after the Super Bowl. Hosts Jay Harris, Kevin Negandhi and Jaymee Sire will offer a (perkier?) take on sports tailored to early birds.

Eric Church and Chris Stapleton lead the nominees for the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards with five nods each. Cam, Chris Young and Little Big Town landed four apiece. Show will be broadcast live (if you’re not on PT) from Vegas Sunday, April 3 at 8p on CBS.

El Rey greenlit Lucha Libre wrestling series Lucha Underground for a third season, to premiere in early 2017. Sophomore run of the original series, produced by MGM in association with FactoryMade Ventures and AG Studios, airs Wednesdays at 8p.

Seven in ten people ages 18 to 35 responded negatively to the possibility of Donald Trump landing in the White House, with 54 percent saying they’d want to flee the country if it came to pass, according to a poll by Fusion network. And one third of those 54 percent were Republicans. Details are here.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Conde Nast Entertainment announced new division CNE Studios, to produce unscripted series developed by CNE. Al Edgington (The Amazing Race) heads the effort. “With the explosive demand for television programming, CNE Studios is the natural progression of taking our success in developing and selling unscripted series to the next level,” said CNE president Dawn Ostroff.

Spike TV, Paramount Television and Universal Cable Productions are teaming to develop scripted series Pendergast. Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead) exec produces, with John McLaughlin (Black Swan) writer and exec producer. Drama centers on an eccentric FBI agent in NYC.

Thunderbird acquired Armoza Formats police drama Street Justice for development and adaptation in the U.S. and Canada. The series has aired for three seasons on Israel’s Channel 10.

Arrow Media has been commissioned to produce a second season of See No Evil for ID in the U.S. and Bell Media’s Canal D in Canada. “With so much of our lives spent tethered to screens of one kind or another, See No Evil serves as a poignant reminder that technology has the potential to capture crucial evidence, and deliver justice when a heinous crime has been committed,” said Kevin Bennett, EVP and GM of ID, where it launches its sophomore run Tuesday, February 23 at 10p.

REALSCREEN

Most networks tout their swelling production schedule. National Geographic Global Networks is fired up to produce fewer shows. Come again? CEO Courteney Monroe outlined her vision at Realscreen on Monday in DC. In short, the company is thinking big, eschewing “tonnage” and embracing premium content. “The word premium is new to our vocabulary and we’re going to get there by producing fewer but more distinctive programming. High-quality, bigger budget, really creatively ambitious programming in partnership with A-list creative talent,” said Monroe. “Our strategy over the past few years was defined by volume. We’re inverting that a bit. We are focusing on quality over quantity, but we have no preconceived notions about the hours we are planning to produce.” Monroe pointed to upcoming Morgan Freeman-shepherded Story of God, which premieres April 3, and series Mars (from Imagine Entertainment and Radical Media), and planet earth probeOne Strange Rock as content that define the network’s current vision. Nat Geo is also returning to feature documentaries including an upcoming Jane Goodall doc helmed by Brett Morgen (Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck) that will feature contents of 200 canisters of never-seen Goodall film Morgen uncovered.

Just say Yes: Producers and networks in the nonscripted realm need to stop using the word derivative, and start thinking of imitation as the sincerest form of flattery. “If viewers like it, why not make a clone if it? HGTV is Househunters sliced a bunch of different ways,” ScrippsKathleen Finch said during Realscreen panel The New Normal. “When you’ve figured out who your audience is, super-serving them that content is a winning game, especially because the repeat business has gotten so much softer.” Echoed SallyAnn Salsano, president of 495 Productions, “We have to stop saying the word derivative. Start saying sweet spot.” It’s important to assess all the angles, noted Brent Montgomery, CEO of ITV America. “When we break a brand, we want to monetize that brand. But when we get a call and someone says it’s a derivate from a buyer, that’s a negative.”

The main difference between scripted and unscripted? “It runs a lot slower, and it’s a writer’s medium. In scripted you’re only as good as your writer,” said Jimmy Fox, EVP of Objective Productions USA, who’s at work on The Arrangement, about a Hollywood contract marriage, E!’s second scripted series. “E! said after The Royals they wanted to do stuff that was soapy, with a Hollywood backdrop and they wouldn’t mind something darker,” he said… Best pitching advice from Leslie Greif, CEO of Thinkfactory (think, Hatfields and McCoys): “Listen to what all the network execs want, give them what they want with your own unique point of view, and understand the network executives want a hit, too. Go make that executive a hero.”

Loud TV (Tiny House Nation), part of Leftfield Entertainment and ITV America, and Canada-based Frantic Films (Still Standing) forged a strategic partnership to develop and produce programming for the U.S. and Canadian markets. The deal was signed at Realscreen.

SYNDICATION

Media General renewed Hollywood Live Today for a second season, after Fox Television Stations gave the thumbs up. “The show is energetic and relevant, and fits well with our lineup,” said Stephen Brown, EVP of programming and development for Fox Television Stations. Garcelle Beauvais (The Jamie Foxx Show) was named a new co-host on the news, gossip and lifestyle show from Media General’s BiteSize TV.

Eclipse Television announced a 2016 syndication package of five one-hour Incredible Dog Challenge specials, with air windows between April and September

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

IMAX and Discovery Communications formed a global distribution and marketing partnership that provides Discovery Channel with 18 months of exclusive paid global television rights for up to 10 IMAX documentary films following their theatrical release. It’s IMAX’s first television distribution agreement for original content.

Sony Pictures Television channel getTV inked a deal with Media General for both over-the-air and local carriage in 20 new markets. With the agreement, getTV has local deals in place in 87 markets.

Independent content studio The WorkShop reached an exclusive deal with Reelz for one-hour program The Real Story: Invincible, about “real life Rocky Balboa” Vince Papale.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Discovery Networks International renewed Too Ugly for Love? for a third season. Season two on TLC UK premiered January 13 up triple digits over the 52-week channel average. Dating series follows people who are hiding medical secrets from potential suitors.

Zig Zag Productions and Japan’s Yoshimoto Kogyo are re-teaming to co-produce new game show format PrankStars. The companies also collaborated on Time Out for KTV and slow motion format Split/Second for Nickelodeon.

A+E Networks has launched H2 HD with MENA region pay-TV net OSN. Viewers in the Middle East will also have access to a localized feed for History.
