Major League Soccer announced that Chicago’s Soldier Field will host the league’s 2017 All-Star Game on Aug. 2. The date marks the second time in the 22-year history of the league that Chicago will play host to the mid-season classic. “Chicago is one of the great sports cities in America, and Soldier Field is one of the most historic venues in this country and around the world,” said Garber in a statement released by the Fire. “The MLS All-Star Game is an opportunity to take the best of our league and put them up against one of the best clubs while broadcasting it around the globe.”
NBC’s Saturday telecast of the $12 Million Pegasus World Cup Invitational over the weekend posted a 1.23 overnight rating for the network, according to Nielsen. That marks the best for an afternoon horse race (not counting Triple Crown races)? since American Pharoah won the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in ’15 in his final race.
With more Nielsen numbers in, ESPN saw the Australian Open Men’s Championship rank as the most-watched in 13 years, serving up an average of 1,133,000 viewers to mark the best numbers since 2004. Viewership was more than double the average for last year. Meanwhile, the historic matchup of the Williams Sisters drew a total audience of 953,000 viewers over the weekend, up 37% from last year’s match and marking the largest audience for the event since it moved to an overnight time slot in 2009.
David Feherty is back for Golf Channel’s Feherty, with the seventh season of his show set to return to the network on March 6 with a lineup of guests that will include the likes of Phil Mickelson, Matthew McConaughey, Condoleezza Rice and Patrick Reed. Meanwhile, Farmers Insurance signed on to become Presenting Sponsor of the Series in the new season. “Given our affiliation with the game of golf and the Farmers Insurance Open®, joining as presenting sponsor was an organic fit for us,” said Leesa Eichberger, head of brand marketing for Farmers Insurance. “Working with Feherty will give Farmers® further opportunities to connect with golf enthusiasts.”
ESPN announced plans to deliver more than 600 college softball games across its slate with over 65 games airing on television showcasing a team that is currently ranked. The regular season slate concludes with a triple header of conference championship games aired on ESPN (May 13) American, ACC and SEC. ESPNU and SEC Network will televise the earlier rounds of the SEC Championship while ACC Network Extra will carry the early rounds of the ACC tournament. ESPN3 is also expected to carry a number of conference championships with that schedule announced later. Of course, the company will also be home of the NCAA Division I Softball Championship beginning with the selection show on May 14 on ESPNU.
In lacrosse, ESPN’s coverage of the 2017 men’s college lacrosse season sees more than 25 televised games in the lineup, beginning Feb. 7 with Navy/Johns Hopkins. ESPNU will be the home of four conference championships, including the ACC, America East, Ivy League and MAAC, as well as the entire NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Every matchup on the slate features a ranked team.
National Signing Day today sees BTN dedicating eight hours of programming to the event, with a lineup that includes the B1G Football & Beyond Signing Day Special at 9a. Mike Hall will handle hosting duties with analysts Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith, and the trio will be joined by Midwest Football Recruiting Manager for Scout.com, Allen Trieu.
Meanwhile, National Signing Day will also see Pac-12 Networks counter with 4.5 hours of coverage live at noon PT with Inside Pac-12 Football: Signing Day Special on its channels. Mike Yam, Yogi Roth, and Anthony Herron will examine this incoming class of football student-athletes and analyze the projected impact tomorrow’s stars may have on their programs.
ESPN reports that weekday debate show First Take is averaging 515,000 viewers per live episode since its move to ESPN on Jan. 3. That marks a 14% increase in viewership compared to the same time period in 2016 when the show was on ESPN2.
Trouble in paradise for the Raiders potential move to Las Vegas as Yahoo Finance reports that following the move by Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson to withdraw from plans to help finance a new $1.9 billion stadium in Las Vegas for team, plan “B” in Goldman Sachs is now out as well.

FC Bayern Munich has a new partner, with Apple Music signing on as a new sponsor of the team. The deal will see the service offer exclusive playlists and other content to fans of the team and serve as the club’s official music service. In addition, Beats by Dr. Dre will continue to be the official sound partner of FC Bayern Munich providing the club with premium headphones and speakers.
Black History Month will see MLB focus on youth-related initiatives this year, with activities set to include the launch with two Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life visits by Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson, as well as a collegiate baseball tournament designed to promote Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the 10th annual Urban Invitational in New Orleans. Meanwhile, MLB’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities program will host its biennial RBI Institute, a training conference for coaches and league administrators within RBI affiliations from throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Curacao. In addition to other club activities, MLB Network will honor some of the greatest African-American players in Major League Baseball history, including Hank Aaron, Rod Carew, Ken Griffey Jr., Willie Mays, Frank Robinson and Jackie Robinson during its celebration of Black History Month with daily vignettes about each player’s life and career on MLB Network’s Hot Stove and MLB Tonight.
MP & Silva was retained by the New York Red Bulls to sell the naming rights for the team’s home, Red Bull Arena. Gillette became the latest non-endemic brand to plug into esports. The company announced yesterday that it had entered into as global partnership with ESL as Sponsor of the League of Legends Intel Extreme Masters World Championship Katowice 2017, and also named League of Legends Player Enrique “xPeke” Cedeno as New Global Brand Ambassador for the company. “It’s been exciting and eye-opening as we’ve immersed ourselves in the gaming community and discovered that both professional and amateur gamers have a lot in common with other premier athletes and sports fanatics. Gamers at all levels recognize the importance of precision split seconds and minute movements make big differences. Former San Jose Sharks co-owner Stratton Sclavos is reportedly a new partner at Echo Fox. ESPN reports that Sclavos’s investment helped team founder Rick Fox add a slew of top fighting game players in the world in Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Super Smash Bros.
IDC/Games & Turtle Entertainment, founder and organizer of the ESL, announced today that Zula Europe would be included to the list of games in the ESL. Contests will take the classic ESL format, like OPEN & Go4 and a Ladder 5v5, and have weekly & monthly format, with to-be-announced prizes. The first competition takes place on Feb. 4.
