IN THE NEWS

Scratch that: AMC has reversed the season two renewal of “Soulmates.” The sci-fi anthology series from Will Bridges and Brett Goldstein had been renewed in August 2020, two months ahead of the show’s premiere.

Warner Bros. Discovery is suing Paramount Global over streaming rights to new episodes of Comedy Central’s “South Park.” In a lawsuit filed on Friday, WBD said it paid $500 million for exclusive streaming rights to new and existing episodes of the animated comedy for HBO Max until 2025. While new episodes were held up in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, two specials were produced, and were added to Paramount+ in 2021, a move WBD maintains amounts to breach of contract. A Paramount spokesperson said the claims are without merit.

Jeff Titus, the subject of ID docuseries “Killer in Question,” was exonerated and released from prison on Friday after spending 21 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. Sentenced to a life sentence for the alleged murder of two deer hunters in 1990, Titus’ case drew the attention of a TV producer and a podcaster who uncovered evidence, aired on the ID show, that questioned the conviction. “This is a perfect example of the power and purpose of what we can do as a leader in the true crime genre,” said Jason Sarlanis, President, Turner Networks, ID and HLN, Linear & Streaming. “At our best, Investigation Discovery’s content can right injustices in the world and allow for actual impact on our justice system.”

“Saturday Night Live” drew fire for host Woody Harrelson’s opening monologue, during which the “True Detective” star implied there was a conspiracy to promote Covid-19 vaccines. Harrelson talked about a script in which, “The biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes. And people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over.” But not everyone objected to the reference. “So based,” tweeted Elon Musk. “Nice work.”

Top TV winners at the PGA Awards over the weekend included HBO’s “The White Lotus” and “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” FX’s “The Bear,” Hulu’s “The Dropout,” CNN’s “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and Prime Video’s “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrls.”

WNBA player Britney Griner made her first public appearance since returning from Russia at the NAACP Image Awards. “I want to thank everyone, and let’s keep fighting to bring home every American detained overseas,” said the basketball star, who was held in Russia for ten months. Angela Bassett was named Entertainer of the Year, and ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and Starz’ “P-Valley” added awards for Outstanding Comedy and Outstanding Drama Series, respectively, to their trophy hauls.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

ID has renewed “The Playboy Murders” and “Death By Fame for second seasons, noting that the two true crime docuseries helped the net reach the top spot for non-sports cable networks with women 25-54 last month. “This year, ID has seen incredible momentum in the true crime space delivering an unparalleled combination of top returning series and new hit shows both on cable and streaming,” said Jason Sarlanis.

HGTV ordered spinoff “Windy City Rehab: Alison’s Dream Home” (working title), documenting renovation expert Alison Victoria’s transformation of her Chicago warehouse. The eight-episode season is slated to premiere in summer 2023.

Docuseries “FBI True” starts streaming tomorrow, February 28 on Paramount+. Through surveillance video, interrogation and personal photos, the 10-parter from “FBI” co-creator Craig Turk will focus on the experiences of the FBI agents who inspired the original CBS series. FBI special agent Anne Beagan, CBS’ See It Now Films and Efran Films Canada have partnered with Turk on the series.

“The Mandalorian” director Jon Favreau said the series does not have a planned ending. “I think the beauty of this is that it’s a middle chapter of a much larger story,” Favreau told Total Film. “Though we’ll have resolution over time with these characters…it’s not like there’s a finale that we’re building to that I have in mind. Quite the contrary, I love for these stories to go on and on.” Season three debuts March 1 on Disney+.

Prodigy® Cultural Arts Program will receive $10,000 through the 2022-2023 Stand For The Arts Awards, a partnership with Spectrum and Ovation TV that recognizes local arts, cultural and educational organizations and programs. Since the initiative started in 2017, Ovation TV and Spectrum have given out 60 awards totaling $600,000 towards arts education.

Casting notes: Eric Stonestreet (“Modern Family”) has joined the season two cast of Disney+ series “The Santa Clauses,” a spinoff of the “Santa Clause” films. Stonestreet will play the Mad Santa, who tries to reclaim the North Pole….Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”), Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”) and David Cross (“Station Eleven”) have boarded Netflix superhero series “The Umbrella Academy.”… Marc John Jefferies, Dorien Wilson and Gerard Cordeo will star in “Demonico.” The scripted series follows a hitman who, with the help of his daughter, seeks revenge on the employers who double-crossed him.

NEW SERIES

The Cooking Channel is set to reveal the “Secrets of Spain.” Following George and Gioconda Scott through southern Spain’s Andalucia region, the new series will dig into everything from gourmet fare to gas station delicacies. Premiere date: Monday, March 20 at 10p.

Nat Geo is getting busy in the kitchen, too, with “Restaurants at the End of the World.” The series focuses on chef Kristen Kish as she explores the world’s most remote eateries, starting March 21 in Panama.

COMING UP

Tom Cruise will appear with James Corden on “The Last Last Late Late Show” on April 27. Ahead of Corden’s final episode of CBS’ “The Late Late Show” later that night, Cruise and Corden will be featured in a “The Lion King” segment filmed at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood.

An episode of ABC’s “American Idol” will air Sunday, March 12 following the 95th Oscars. In the audition episode, the hunt will be on for future superstars in New Orleans, Las Vegas and Nashville.

Actress and singer Sofia Carson, accompanied by songwriter Diane Warren, will perform the Oscar-nominated song “Applause” from “Tell It like a Woman” at the Oscars.

“Wanda Sykes: I’m An Entertainer” is coming to Netflix. Sykes’ second hour-long standup special on the streamer, tackling current topics with social commentary, was filmed earlier this month and will premiere globally on May 23.

Canela Media is celebrating International Women’s History Month with special programming across its platforms. “We celebrate women all year long at Canela Media, but International Women’s History Month gives us a moment to pause and highlight many of our Latina trailblazers and future leaders across our content verticals: entertainment, music, kids and sports,” said Isabel Rafferty Zavala, founder and CEO of Canela Media.
