TelevisaUnivision unveiled plans for ViX, its much-touted global streaming service created specifically for the Spanish-speaking world. ViX will offer more than 50,000 hours of Spanish-language content across genres including original series and movies, live sports, live news and current Televisa and Univision hits. The service is debuting in stages. The free AVOD product arrives in the US, Mexico and most of Latin America on Thursday, March 31 with 100 EPG channels and VOD experience. The SVOD option, ViX+, which adds premium content including “ViX+ Originals” and exclusive soccer, is slated to launch in the second half of 2022. The company’s existing streaming options, including PrendeTV, Blim TV and the legacy VIX AVOD service acquired in 2021, will be incorporated into the new ViX platform in the coming months. V
Sixty-eight percent of CTV viewers use at least one live TV streaming service, and 44 percent of cable TV subscribers said they would cancel cable within the next six months if they could access live sports through streaming, according to Magnite’s new report “CTV Live Streaming: TV’s Next Big Moment.” Other insights: Live sports streamers are likely to watch multiple ad-supported services with an average of 3.6 sports apps, and advertising is a key part of the live sports viewing experience, with 49 percent of live sports streamers agreeing with the statement “TV ads are an important part of my TV watching experience.” “Anecdotally, we know that live TV, especially live sports, is unparalleled in its ability to get people engaged and we commissioned this study to better understand how people access and interact with this content,” said Sean Buckley, chief revenue officer at Magnite. “One of the findings from this study is that engagement with live content extends to the advertising that airs alongside it.”

Hollywood’s Covid safety protocols are extended to April 30 and updated to redefine “fully vaccinated” to include booster shots,” effective March 15, according to a new agreement between the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers and entertainment industry unions. WarnerMedia aims to expand the presence of diverse beauty professionals on its TV and film productions via a new partnership Black Beauty Roster, a platform for hair and makeup education, talent and advocacy. Black Beauty Roster, which educates about the nuances of working with textured hair and darker complexions and how to be better advocates for talent of color, will provide hair and makeup staffing support for WarnerMedia productions.
A whole new world: Disney is erecting planned full-time living communities, called “Storyliving,” as a way to connect fans even more closely with its brands. First community, Cotino, will be developed in Palm Springs, with other sites under exploration. Each locale will be built with input from Disney Imagineers and feature retail, dining, club and other Disney-centric experiences.

Keri Russell (“The Americans”) is in for the lead role in “The Diplomat,” the Netflix drama series created by Debora Cahn. Russell also will exec produce the series, which has an eight-ep order, alongside Cahn and Janice Williams. Action follows a career diplomat who lands a high-profile job she’s not suited for in the middle of an international crisis.
Warner Bros. Television Group signed an exclusive, multiyear deal with exec producer/writer/showrunner Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”). Yockey will develop, create and produce original programming to be produced by Warner Bros. Television for all platforms.
Hulu is developing Adrian McKinty’s upcoming novel The Island as a limited series after it acquired rights to the the book. McKinty will exec-produce the project, a thriller about a family trip that turns into a living hell after a tragic accident finds a family being hunted by locals in harsh bushland, with Shane Salerno and The Story Factory.
A+E Networks announced a marketing partnership with Ancestry to create a custom branded miniseries that tells the stories of formerly enslaved African Americans. The Ancestry branded content series will be featured on digital and social platforms and make its broadcast premiere Sunday, February 20, during the broadcast of The History Channel’s documentary “Abraham Lincoln.”
Will Smith and David Oyelowo will produce Netflix’s film adaptation of Tola Okogwu’s upcoming children’s book Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun. The first in a series of children’s books from the author, journalist and hair care educator, follows a teenager who learns she has powers, travels to Nigeria to learn more about her origins and discovers a threat to her newfound magical community. Ola Shokunbi (“Satellite”) will pen the script.
“The Prince” has been dethroned. HBO Max is passing on a renewal of Gary Janetti’s animated comedy series, a biting parody of the British royals through the eyes of their youngest heir Prince George, for a second season. Also on the block is “In Treatment,” which is coming to a close after four seasons… On the flip side, after its strong launch in January, “Peacemaker” will return to HBO Max, with all eps written and directed by James Gunn.
Chelsea and Cole DeBoer of “Teen Mom 2” are heading to HGTV. The network greenlighted six-ep reno and design series “Farmhouse Fabulous” (working title), which will feature the couple as they help families upgrade their homes in South Dakota. A spring 2023 premiere is planned.
Cineflix Productions has begun development on a crime series based on Sam Wiebe’s Wakeland novels Invisible Dead, Cut You Down, and Hell and Gone. The mysteries feature Wakeland, a 29-year-old ex-cop turned P.I., as a modern-day Marlowe.
OWN is under way on its first franchise spinoff with “Love & Marriage: D.C.” The network greenlit the series, which is slated for a spring debut and follows “Love & Marriage: Huntsville,” which returns with new eps Saturday, March 19. The series, produced by Carlos King’s Kingdom Reign Entertainment, will follow power couples including “The Real Housewives of Potomac” alumni Monique and Chris Samuels, as they navigate both their business and personal lives in the D.M.V.
Mindy Kaling is teaming with Amazon to launch a boutique story studio that will publish books selected by Kaling, and which she will look to adapt into films housed at Amazon Studios. Mindy’s Book Studio titles will be available across subscription programs. Kaling is working in concert with Amazon Publishing’s publisher Julia Sommerfeld and Amazon Studios’ head of IP & literary acquisitions Lauren O’Connor on this new Mindy project.
Entertainment One and Forbes Entertainment are at work on two projects focused on the bitcoin money laundering scandal following the recent arrest of so-called “crypto couple,” Heather Morgan and Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein. A scripted project is being co-produced by eOne, Forbes Entertainment and Tucker Tooley Entertainment; a documentary hails from eOne’s Blackfin and Forbes Entertainment.
Comedy Central’s “Tha God’s Honest Truth with Charlamagne Tha God” will be back for a second season. Created and hosted by Lenard “Charlamagne” McKelvey and exec-produced by Stephen Colbert and Aaron McGruder, the new season will be preceded by a batch of exclusive interviews conducted by Charlamagne featuring notable names in entertainment, politics, comedy and publishing.
Showtime and Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment snagged US distribution rights from STX to “The Contractor,” directed by Tarik Saleh. Starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster, the action film will see a limited theatrical release in the US by Paramount and head to Showtime and Paramount+ later in 2022. Paramount+ will be integrating Showtime content this summer with an in-app upgrade to the pay-TV channel’s programming.
HBO Max picked up FiGa Films’ “Nudo Mixteco.” The streamer is planning a May debut for the film, FiGa’s first indigenous project.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Livestreaming platform 17Live, which has 55 million users worldwide, will distribute LiveOne’s original series “Plus One.” The eight-episode first season of the live dating show, hosted by comedian and writer Ify Nwadiwe (“Grand Crew”) will begin airing February 17 at 7p.
Animal Planet will air new episodes of “Mysterious Creatures With Forrest Galante” beginning Saturday, February 19 at 9p. The lens is on wildlife biologist Galante as he travels the globe to investigate reports of strange sightings, and mysterious encounters between humans and wildlife
“Heavy Rescue: 401” is back for a sixth season on The Weather Channel. The men and women who fight to keep traffic moving on North America’s busiest highway are again in the spotlight in the series, which returns Sunday, February 20 at 9p.
The eight-part fourth and final season of “Killing Eve” will debut Sunday, February 27 at 8p on BBC America and AMC+.
“Fuller House” has a new home. The series, which ran for five seasons on Netflix, heads to GAC Family beginning Monday, February 28. The network’s deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television, marks the linear TV debut for the show, which continues the adventures from “Full House” with OG cast including Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber. John Stamos is a producer and makes guest appearances along with Bob Saget as Danny Tanner and other original cast members.
Pirate comedy “Our Flag Means Death” is sailing toward a Thursday, March 3 debut on HBO Max. Starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, the series from creator and showrunner David Jenkins and executive producer Waititi is loosely based on the true adventures of an 18th century pirate who traded his life as a gentleman for one of a swashbuckler.
Amazon dropped a look—err, make that eight looks—of its upcoming “The Boys” universe animated spinoff “The Boys Presents: Diabolical.” Debuting Friday, March 4 the series features eight 12- to 14-minute eps that each boast their own animation style and will reveal unseen stories within the universe featuring talent including Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Ilana Glazer, Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg and Aisha Tyler.
Inspired by the food icon, Food Network’s new “The Julia Child Challenge” gives eight home cooks the chance to win a three-month trip to cooking school in Paris. The series, which bows Monday, March 14 at 9p and also on discovery+, features all Julia Child superfans, who share stories about their hero and cook in a kitchen recreated in the likeness of where Child herself cooked.
The latest iteration of “Below Deck”is headed to Australia as “Below Deck Down Under,” premiering Thursday, March 17 on Peacock. Viewers can expect more complex, often explosive dynamics of the crew and a rotating group of demanding charter guests who step aboard Captain Jason Chambers’ vessel.
Three-part docuseries “Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed,” premieres Thursday, March 24 on discovery+. Doc features interviews with Hillsong insiders, megachurch experts and Ranin Karim, the woman whose five-month affair with celebrity senior pastor Carl Lentz led to his downfall.
Four new hip hop couples are headed for “Marriage Boot Camp: Hip Hop Edition,” premiering Thursday, March 31 at 9p on WE tv. The new season features K. Michelle and Kastan, Rich Dollaz and Mariahlynn, and more headed to see resident counselor Dr. Ish Major.
“The Big Conn,” a new true crime docuseries and podcast from Apple TV+, are set for a Friday, May 6 debut. From FunMeter, the team behind “McMillion$,” “The Big Conn” tells the tale larger-than-life attorney Eric C. Conn, who defrauded the government more than half a billion dollars in the largest Social Security fraud case in history.
COMING UP
Reelz original documentary“America’s Deadliest Rock Concert: The Guest List” hits the screen Sunday, February 20 at 8p. The special presents stories of survivors, victims and their families who were impacted by the 2003 Station nightclub fire, and premieres on the 19th anniversary of the tragedy.
Inspired by David Blight’s biography“Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom” and exec-produced by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., HBO doc “Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches” debuts Wednesday, February 23 at 9p. Project brings to life Douglass’ words from the mouths of actors Nicole Beharie, Colman Domingo, Jonathan Majors, Denzel Whitaker and Jeffrey Wright.
HBO’s two-part “The Larry David Story” debuts Tuesday, March 1 at 10p. The doc finds the 74-year-old writer/producer/comedian sitting down with his pal Larry Charles and getting candid—shocker—about his personal and professional highs and lows from humble beginnings to series “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Longtime MSNBC and NBC News legal analyst Katie Phang will host a weekend show on MSNBC from 7-8a, beginning Saturday, April 9, as well as a live one-hour show on Peacock’s “The Choice from MSNBC” on Thursdays and Fridays beginning April 14 at 2p.
Viva! “The Billboard Music Awards”are returning to Las Vegas this year, with the event slated to air live on NBC on Sunday, May 15 at 8p.

AMC Networks reported 9 million streaming subscribers as of the end of 2021, as the company beat the Street’s estimates for Q4 with earnings in at 54 cents a share and revenue up 3 percent to $803.7 million. Its niche streaming services, including AMC+, Acorn TV, ALLBLCK and Shudder, is on track to reach company projections of 20 million to 25 million subscribers. For the full year 2021, AMC Networks reported record revenue of $3.1 billion, up 9 percent from 2020.
Fox News International, Fox News Media’s global streaming service, will expand distribution into Africa beginning today (February 17). The move adds Egypt, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Zambia, and increases its reach to 44 countries worldwide.
Topic, the streaming service from First Look Entertainment, is now available in the US on Comcast entertainment platforms including Xfinity X1, Xfinity Flex and XClass TV, as an add-on subscription priced at $5.99 per month.
Demand Africa, the global streaming service that hosts original and acquired content from the African Diaspora, launched as a F.A.S.T. channel on the Roku Channel.

Spotify’s having a big week, with the acquisition of two firms in the podcasting space. Podsights, a podcast advertising measurement service, and Chartable, a podcast analytics platform for publishers, are both Spotify companies now.

Frank Pesce—an actor whose television and film credits span “Matlock and “Kojak,” “Beverly Hills Cop and “Top Gun”—died February 6 of complications associated with dementia. He was 75. Pesce began his screen career in the mid-‘70s, guesting on series including “Police Story” and “Kojak.” He worked in film and TV steadily into the 2010s, with guest roles on series including “Cagney & Lacey,” “Knight Rider,” “Miami Vice” and “The Greatest American Hero.”
