02/14/19: The Cubs and partnering with Sinclair to launch a new RSN

The Chicago Cubs unveiled plans to team with Sinclair Broadcast Group for a regional sports network that will launch next spring, the Marquee Sports Network. The network will also provide extensive pregame and postgame coverage, original Cubs-related content and other live sports programming, in addition to games. “We are excited to better serve our fans with expanded and exclusive programming showcasing our remarkable players, beloved ballpark and storied past,” Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney said in a press release, “Our dedicated ‘Cubs-centric’ network will carry all available Cubs games and feature uncompromising, in-depth and behind-the-scenes coverage.”
 
“This partnership brings together one of the most iconic sports franchises in the country with one of the largest television broadcasting companies,” Sinclair president and CEO Chris Ripley said in a release. “It is hard to imagine any content that is more unique and valuable than the live sports entertainment the Cubs have been delivering to their fans for more than a century.
 
 
PROGRAMMING

Poker Central and ESPN detailed the preliminary live coverage schedule for the 50th annual World Series of Poker, which includes start to finish everyday coverage of the WSOP Main Event from July 3-16. PokerGO will also offer exclusive WSOP Main Event coverage that is not broadcast during ESPN windows. Overall, ESPN will telecast at least 40 hours of live WSOP coverage, plus an additional 90 hours of originally produced episodes. “For the third straight year, Poker Central and ESPN will deliver expansive coverage of the WSOP Main Event to a continually growing audience across multiple platforms,” said JR McCabe, chief digital officer of Poker Central. “We again look forward to bringing poker’s pinnacle event to fans around the world.”
 
In ratings numbers, Sunday’s PBA Tournament of Champions on FOX scored 1.131 million viewers, for a markup of 75% over the previous year, according to Nielsen, to rank as the most-watched non-NFL adjacent bowling telecast since 2010.
 
The NBA’s complementary live stream experience on Twitter, launching this weekend during TNT’s presentation of the 2019 NBA All-Star Game, will allow fans to vote from among four players for the athlete they want the iso-cam to follow in the second half. Players will include LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry and James Harden. This week will be announced by Taylor Rooks, Candace Parker, and B. Dot (Brandon Armstrong) with special guests Rob Perez and others.
 
PGA of America President Suzy Whaley will captain the United States Team that will compete in the inaugural Women’s PGA Cup – a first-of-its-kind team competition for women PGA Members from around the world. The event runs Oct. 22-26, at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa, in Austin. Representatives from six PGA governing bodies are anticipated in the Women’s PGA Cup field: Australia, Canada, Great Britain & Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. The field will compete in a 54-hole, stroke-play format, with each team’s lowest three scores counted after each round. The winning country will be the team with the lowest 54-hole aggregate total.
 
Meanwhile, PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan announced that the Genesis Open will receive elevated status on TOUR with the implementation of several key enhancements, beginning in 2020.Announcements include that the Genesis Open will move to invitational qualifying status and reduce its field from 144 players to 120; the champion will receive a three-year PGA TOUR exemption, an increase by one year over the standard winner’s exemption on TOUR; and the purse will grow to $9.3 million.

  • Sunoco will host a number of fan-focused activities to get fans in on the action at their Sunoco injector throughout the weekend.
  • Toyota will have two Supras on display at the Toyota injector for fans to get a closer look at the new car.
 
The National Basketball Association and PUMA entered into a new multiyear partnership that will make the international sports brand an official marketing partner of the NBA that will see PUMA now be able to feature athletes in their respective NBA uniforms and team logos. Additionally, the brand will be able to curate authentic and original content that will allow better story telling of the company and their athletes.

Major League Soccer formally announced its multi-year partnership with Kellogg. running through 2020, with Cheez-It and Pringles remaining the league’s official snacks and Eggo now the official waffle. Kellogg’s will also become a core partner of eMLS with Cheez-It and Pringles becoming presenting partners of the eMLS Player Lounge and the presenting partners of the 2019 eMLS Player Profiles, a digital series highlighting competitor’s personal stories.
 
 
DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

Rotoworld.com will debut its own video platform for the first time as part of a site overhaul that will feature expanded content across all sports. In addition, Rotoworld’s player news will see improved filters while navigation and player pages will provide better statistics and relevant information. The new site also features direct access to Rotoworld’s premium products, allowing users to navigate draft guides, season passes and daily fantasy sports (DFS) toolkits for the NFL, NBA, NHL, and most recently, MLB.
