02/12/20: Turner Sports plans for All-Star week

TNT mapped out its plans for NBA All-Star 2020 in Chicago, serving up more than 24 hours of NBA All-Star programming that will culminate with the 69th NBA All-Star Game presented by Kia on Sunday at 8p. Marv Albert will be behind the mic alongside analysts Reggie Miller and Chris Webber and reporter Allie LaForce. TBS, meanwhile, will offer simulcast coverage of the game. In addition, Turner Sports will deliver a full-court press of fan-friendly attractions and performances in Chicago, including the previously announced NBA on TNT American Express Road Show, featuring musical performances by artists Anderson .Paak and Maroon 5 and more. Bleacher Report will celebrate the arrival of NBA All Star 2020 in Chicago with a B/R CHI fan event at one of the most exciting venues in the city – Saffron Rails. B/R CHI will be a public event featuring hoops action, art and style activations, along with a dual-level “crystal court” conceptualized in partnership with Victor Solomon, which will serve as a transparent performance stage for all the action, culminating with a headline performance by megastar music artist – Quavo.


Reactions to the news that MLB is mulling a significant restructuring of its playoff format took center stage yesterday with once scenario seeing that the postseason would begin with a dramatic live television show where two teams from each league would have the ability to select their first-round opponents. The proposed format would see the total number of playoff teams in each league increase from five to seven, with the Wild Card round expanding from a one-game playoff to a best-of-three series and potentially go into effect as early as the 2022 season. The league’s potential plan was first reported by the New York Post. The best-of-three format in the Wild Card round would set up the potential for as many as 18 first-round games, 12 of which could be elimination games.

FOX Sports reports that its 2020 FOX NASCAR season opened up with gains of 7% for the Busch Clash on FS1 over the weekend. Sunday’s action drew 2.455 million viewers to rank as the largest Busch Clash audience on the channel since 2014.

Sunday sees ESPN and ABC commemorate the 40th anniversary of the ‘Miracle on Ice’ – when the United States hockey team defeated the heavily favored then Soviet Union on February 22, 1980, in their run to a gold medal. Special programming across ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 will air throughout the day including a one-hour SportsCenter Special: Miracle on Ice at 40, Walt Disney Pictures’ Miracle and more. To relive all the history-making moments and define the legacy as it stands today, Jeremy Schaap will host SportsCenter Special: Miracle on Ice at 40 at 2p on ABC and sit down with players from the team including Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig and Mark Johnson.

FloSports launched FloBaseball, an all-new platform dedicated to collegiate and youth baseball. The outlet will feature over 700 games on the broadcast schedule featuring top ranked NCAA teams competing in leading collegiate tournaments including the Frisco Classic, Round Rock Classic, Kleberg Invitational, Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic, Snowbird Classic and more. The new platform will also present extensive high school and youth baseball programming not previously available anywhere as well as news, exclusive interviews and original content highlighting the next generation of baseball’s rising stars.

FOX Sports announced that WBC Super Middleweight Champion David Benavidez will serve as an analyst with host Kate Abdo for the FOX PBC Weigh-In on FS2 on Friday at 1:30p. Saturday then sees FOX PBC Fight Night at 8p. Inside PBC Boxing follows Saturday’s fights on FOX at 11p, featuring host Abdo and analysts Shawn Porter and Abner Mares as they preview the highly anticipated championship rematch between unbeaten heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and undefeated lineal champion Tyson Fury and interview both fighters.

Five new episodes of The Boardroom, produced by Thirty Five Ventures and ESPN+, will be available today with two live episodes planned for next month’s MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Cambridge., and South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin. Season 2 of The Boardroom addresses topics that include athlete/entertainer stereotypes, women in sports, building an athlete’s brand, player empowerment and more.

MSG Networks delivers The Sweat presented by DraftKings with the 30-minute show running every Tuesday-Friday through the end of the NBA and NHL seasons. Starting in August, the show will then air five days a week, Monday-Friday. DraftKings’ talent, Jessie Coffield, Adam Kaufman and Brendan Glasheen will host the shows and variety of additional contributors including editors and analysts will provide viewers with an in-depth look at the sports betting landscape each day.

Sports Innovation Lab today shared its latest report, The Fluid Fan Is Here, defining key trends, leading technologies, and behaviors of the modern sports fan. Research led Sports Innovation Lab to create a series of new rules for brands to consider as they interact with Fluid Fans.
· Redefine “fan engagement,” design for behaviors: stop talking about “engagement” as a catchall and recognize that “fan engagement” is when a fan actively performs an intended behavior and moves with purpose among related activities. Sports Innovation Lab identifies three core behaviors in the sports industry: Go, Watch, and Play. Every business begins with a core behavior, but they need to understand adjacent behaviors like “Bet,” “Learn,” “Create,” and “Share,” to effectively engage Fluid Fans.
· Enable fluid tech: brands should understand technology is the driving force that enables fans to move between modes of engagement; decision-makers should bear the aforementioned core and tangential behaviors in mind when speaking to fans.
· Organize for agility: the sports industry needs to begin to think about how to support their fans as they move from one behavior to another. Brands that effectively enable and support fans across core and adjacent behaviors — in the attention economy — will win.

The Pac-12 announced that the Conference’s sustainability platform, Pac-12 Team Green, extended its efforts with Copia through the 2019-20 academic season, ensuring all remaining Conference championships in 2020 will be zero-food-waste events. In addition, the extension has already helped the 2019 Pac-12 Football Championship Game recover over 600 lbs. of food from Levi’s Stadium and will also ensure that the upcoming 2020 Pac-12 Sustainability Conference at the University of Utah will be a zero-food-waste event.


NBC Olympics and NowThis, a mobile-first video news outlet, are partnering for the upcoming Olympics by spotlighting US Olympic and Paralympic athletes in the lead up to the 2020 Games in Tokyo. Intel Extreme Masters returns to the Australia in August, headlining the Melbourne Esports Open, the IEM tournament that see sixteen teams compete for a $250,000 prize pool on Aug. 22 and 23.
