IN THE NEWS

NBCUniversal’s broadcast television revenue rose 14 percent during 4Q16, to $2.8 billion, with big assists from Thursday Night Football and political ads. But even without football and politics, “advertising increased modestly as strong pricing from the upfront outpaced ratings declines,” said Comcast senior EVP-CFO Michael J. Cavanaugh during an earnings conference. The company’s cable nets were up 4 percent, to $2.5 billion for the quarter.

Comcast Chairman-CEO Brian Roberts was bullish: “This Is Us is the year’s breakout new series and a wonderful show. SNL is having its most-watched season in 20 years and we continue to rank No. 1 across dayparts in broadcast ranging from The Today Show, to Nightly News all the way through to Late Night. Telemundo beat Univision on many nights for the first time in its history.”

“The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country,” chief White House strategist Steve Bannon told the New York Times. Plus, the media “should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while.” Is Bannon way off base, or does he have a point? Findings in “Ads You Can Feel: The New Mobile Experience” were based on feedback from spots for BMW, Royal Caribbean, Arby’s and Truvia using technology developed by Immersion Corp.

Cynopsis will be honoring today’s top advertising talent at the Buyers & Planners Awards celebration in NYC on February 7. Who are our all-star nominees? Meet Jen Blohm, supervisor, media planning, IMM.

Cynopsis: What is the biggest challenge facing the advertising community today?
Jen Blohm:
The greatest obstacle, that has equal in importance and the impact it will have if we cannot overcome it is privacy. We’ve all been so obsessed with the concept of the Internet of Things and its implications on immersive advertising, that we haven’t spent nearly enough time considering how we will overcome privacy issues and consumer’s negative attitudes towards advertising ‘stalking’ them.

Cynopsis: What kind of education or experience helped prepare you for a job in media planning?
Blohm:
The University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em!) has an amazing advertising program, and allowed me to have a specialty in media planning. I also made it a priority to get an integrated media planning position as my first full-time agency job to make certain that I was well-versed in both linear and digital media.

Cynopsis: What do you find most rewarding about your job at IMM?
Blohm:
Entrepreneurship is a core value at IMM, allowing everyone to have influence on company decisions. It has created a culture where we all have skin in the game and are in this together, which carries over to our relationships with our clients.

Cynopsis: What are you wearing to the Cynopsis Awards?
Blohm:
Coming from Boulder, Colorado, I’ll be wearing one of our traditional outfits: hemp yoga pants, a vegan leather vest, and a blouse made from recycled cat fur. That or a Rachel Zoe dress, I haven’t quite decided.
For questions about the event, which will also include the inaugural TV Awards, please email [email protected].

DIGITAL DATA

U.S. immigrants worried about President Trump’s hard-line stance on immigration will get a hand from an interactive digital tool from Univision News. If they input a zip code or address, users will get a list of nonprofit groups in the area that can assist them, including explaining their rights and options.

The penetration of Internet-connected TVs among US broadband households has increased nearly 50% since 2013, from 50 percent to 74 percent at year-end 2016, according to new research from The Diffusion Group. And that puts penetration “in the Late Mainstream of its trajectory,” said Michael Greeson, TDG president and director of research. “Barring any major disruption in TV technology or market condition, growth will slow each year as the solution reaches saturation.”

TNT and TBS are turning up the digital dial for their live simulcast of the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Awards on Sunday, January 29. The event will include two different red carpet pre-shows: People, EW & TNT’s SAG Awards Red Carpet Live, and new Carpet Diem (ha!) from TBS and Refinery29. Both editions will feature interviews with nominees, presenters, past recipients and other attendees as they head into the ceremony.

Six-part digital doc Legacy: Bob Hurley, focused on the potential final season for the Hall of Fame basketball coach, debuts on Sho.com and the Showtime Sports YouTube channel on Monday, February 20. Hurley has led the Jersey City boys’ basketball team to 28 state championships in his nearly 50 years as coach.

The 2017 Makers Conference, featuring Eva Longoria, Debra Messing, Octavia Spencer, Lilly Singh and more, will livestream on Makers.com February 6-8.
