This may be the era of “peak TV,” with sumptuously-produced dramas grabbing the spotlight, but high profile scripted series often aren’t what’s driving network performance. “When we factor in the price point/economic model for these scripted series… the value of reality is borne out,” says INE Entertainment Managing Partner Eric Day in the new Cynsiders. For more from Day on the value of TV genres, as well as emerging platforms and integrations between telecoms and content providers, go here.

A technical issue caused a Facebook and Instagram outage for many users around the world yesterday around 1:16p ET, including parts of the U.S., central Mexico, South America and Europe, among other areas. If broadband companies want to be in business with state agencies in New York, they will not be able to block, throttle or prioritize content, or charge consumers different rates to access specific types of content or applications. The net neutrality rules were ordered by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, effective March 1. “The FCC’s dangerous ruling goes against the core values of our democracy, and New York will do everything in our power to protect net neutrality and the free exchange of ideas,” Cuomo said Wednesday.
Hulu and IFC Films inked a multi-year output deal that will bring current and future non-documentary, narrative films released by IFC Films and sister labels IFC Midnight and Sundance Selects to the streamer, exclusively after their in-theater runs. ADVERTISING
Ad agencies are using their own space as sites for clients’ pop-up experiences, reports Digiday. The arrangement saves on real estate costs, and lets the agency show off their experiential marketing prowess. Digital agency Grow and Hawke Media are 2 examples cited of agencies offering space where brands can experiment. “Our intent is not to make money off this,” Drew Ungvarsky, CEO and creative director at Grow, told Digiday. “We’re thinking of it as a space where our partners can innovate.”
In a new survey, 38% of industry pros chose experiential marketing as the most successful marketing tactic. Over 80% reported gaining valuable data from events, according to AgencyEA research. “In our always-on digital world, consumer attention is fractured, ever-shrinking and in high demand. Which means it’s increasingly challenging for brands to break through in any meaningful way,” says Scott Lachut, President Research & Strategy, PSFK. “Even with their connected lifestyles (and perhaps because of them) people place greater value on real-world experiences due to their ability to engage the senses and emotions, build community and create both shared and shareable moments.”
Adds Lachut, a panelist in the January 30 webinar, Getting Maximum Impact from Experiential Marketing, “By bringing their story to life offline, brands can not only generate quality engagement, but also capture valuable data and insights that can amplify online impact with related content.” For insights and strategies on how to execute experiences that supercharge your story, go here.
Adtaxi announced its digital advertising predictions for 2018. Among them: with the increasing popularity of Amazon Alexa-enabled devices and Google Home, advertisers will begin tapping into new territory with voice advertising. Also, given the controversies surrounding content on YouTube and their commitment to ensuring consumer and brand safety, safety ratings for videos will exist by the end of 2018.
CASTING
Michael Shannon (The Shape of Warner) was tapped to star in BBC/AMC mini-series, The Little Drummer Girl… Kenneth Branagh and Lily Cole (St. Trinian) joined the third season cast of BBC comedy Upstart Crow… Joanne Whalley (Wolf Hall) was added to the Season 2 cast of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix.
KID STUFF
Federation Kids & Family, Cottonwood Media and Planeta Junior partnered to develop, distribute and license premium kids and family programs worldwide. “To succeed in the industry, today, it is essential not only to create high-quality programs, but ensure their strategic placement in a constantly evolving tv and licensing market. Our partnership with Planeta Junior will make way for this success,” said David Michel, Managing Director, Federation Kids & Family, and President, Cottonwood Media.
GOING GLOBAL
British broadcaster ITV renewed Dancing on Ice for another season and is eying a deal in the U.S. The rebooted reality series, which features celebrities competing in skating challenges, garnered some 8 million viewers over its first three episodes.
Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Malachi Kirby (Roots) are attached to eight-part Sky drama, Curfew. The British broadcasters’s latest programming announcement tells the story of ordinary people competing in the world’s fastest, illegal nighttime street race.
