After nearly 50 years as a host and play-by-play commentator, Brent Musburger is walking away from the microphone and announcing the end to long-running career. His last assignments will be to call two more men’s college basketball games, with his final telecast set for Jan. 31 at 9p on ESPN with Georgia/Kentucky. Musburger, who is 77, told media that he’s leaving active his role to help his family launch a sports handicapping business here in Las Vegas
“What a wonderful journey I have traveled with CBS and the Disney company,” Musburger said. “A love of sports allows me to live a life of endless pleasure. And make no mistake, I will miss the arenas and stadiums dearly. Most of all, I will miss the folks I have met along the trail.”
ESPN President John Skipper added, “Brent’s presence and delivery have come to symbolize big time sports for multiple generations of fans. When he opens with his signature ‘You are looking live,’ you sit up straight in your chair because you know something important is about to happen. Brent’s catalog of big events is unmatched, and he has skillfully guided us through some of the most dramatic and memorable moments in sports with his authentic and distinctive style. He is one of the best story-tellers to ever grace a sports booth. We and the fans will miss him.”
ESPN detailed plans for this year’s NFL Pro Bowl on Sunday at 7:50p from Camping World Stadium in Orlando with programming set to include the first Skills Showdown, reports from team practices, and live telecasts of ESPN studio shows from Pro Bowl events at Walt Disney World Resort, including Mike and Mike, NFL Live and segments of SportsCenter. ESPN’s Monday Night Football team of Sean McDonough, Jon Gruden and reporter Lisa Salters will call the game while the Spanish-language telecast on ESPN Deportes will see Eduardo Varela, Pablo Viruega and reporter John Sutcliffe. Chris Berman hosts a special Postseason NFL Countdown pregame show at 6p.
CBS Sports tees off on its 2017 golf coverage this weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open beginning Saturday at 3p. Jim Nantz serves as anchor of the telecasts with Nick Faldo returning as lead analyst alongside Nantz in the 18th tower. Ian Baker-Finch calls the action at the 17th hole with Gary McCord at #16. Golf coverage this year will include 20 PGA TOUR events, along with The Masters and the PGA Championship. Production this year will see the network’s the return of SwingVision and Smartcart, which will now be offered on every PGA TOUR event.
Speaking of golf, Golf Channel lined up three televised events this year for its 2017 World Long Drive slate, expanding coverage to include two additional televised events airing on the network in June and July in addition to its two nights of World Long Drive Championship programming in September. For the first time ever, the Women’s Division will be live on TV, airing on Golf Channel at each of the three televised events, and marks the first time in 13 years that the Women’s Division will be represented at scheduled Long Drive sanctioned events.

ESPN announced its game selection for the May 21 edition of Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell, locking in the Rangers/Tigers at 8p on the network. Dan Shulman will provide commentary with analysts Jessica Mendoza and Aaron Boone and reporter Buster Olney.
Snoop Dogg opens the 2017 Coors Light NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Saturday at STAPLES Center behind the turntables as DJ Snoopadelic, performing a set on the ice during player introductions before the All-Stars showcase their hockey talents in six events. The 2017 Coors Light NHL All-Star Skills Competition and DJ Snoopadelic performance will broadcast live on NBCSN on Saturday at 7p.

ESPN rolled out its sponsors for X Games Aspen 2017, running Jan. 26-29, with live coverage on ESPN and ABC. This year’s event sees GEICO jump on-board as the competition’s music sponsor alongside returning official sponsors America’s Navy, AT&T, Coors Light, GoPro, Harley-Davidson, Jeep brand, LifeProof and Monster Energy. Polaris returns as an additional sponsor. GEICO will support the GEICO Music Stage, which will feature musical performances by Bassnectar, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, The Chainsmokers and G-Eazy. Other activations include America’s Navy serving as the title sponsor of the Men’s Snowboard Big Air competition, while Coors Light hosts the Coors Light Chalet.
Tennis Channel is partnering with Billboard for the Australian Open, announcing the All-Time Top 25 Songs by Australian Acts on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart and the All-Time Top 10 Australian Acts on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Songs Chart. The lists were chosen based on the best performing Australian artists and songs to appear on Billboard’s Hot 100 music charts over the years. Top song Physical by Olivia Newton John. Beginning with the first week of the season’s initial Grand Slam, the channel’s on-air team gave viewers new songs from the top 25 list as they counted down to the all-time number one.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment announced the Baltimore Brigade as the new name for the Baltimore Arena Football League franchise. The Brigade moniker “represents the city of Baltimore’s rich military history and symbolizes the strength of the city and the team playing as a unified force on the field.” MedStar Health is the presenting partner of the Baltimore Brigade’s debut season in 2017 and is the official medical partner.
Head of the Super Bowl, Yahoo is teaming up with Pizza Hut to launch Squares Pick’em, allowing fans to sign up and fill out their grids through the Yahoo Fantasy app and desktop experience. After signing up, users can invite friends to pick Pizza Hut-themed boxes on a 10×10 grid. Each square equals a possible score at the end of every quarter of the football game.
ONE Championship renewed its partnership with the largest mobile prepaid service provider in Malaysia – Tune Talk. In partnership with Tune Talk, ONE Championship returns to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 10 February to hold ONE: Throne of Tigers and the two companies will be launching a 24-episode original web series, featuring Jason Lo and the ONE Ring Girls touring Kuala Lumpur.
The Grand Prix Association of Long Beach locked in a multi-year agreement with K1 Speed to join the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach as Official Go-Kart Track Operator. K1 Speed will continue to run the popular Go-Kart Challenge track for Grand Prix fans atop the Long Beach Arena parking garage, as well as receive signage around the world-famous, 1.97-mile track.
The PGA TOUR and its tournaments reports that they donated more than $166 million to charitable causes in 2016, marking a record-breaking total for the organizations. The announcement brings the all-time total generated for charity by the PGA TOUR to $2.46 billion since the first-ever charitable contribution of $10,000 was made by the 1938 Palm Beach Invitational. “The record-breaking charitable donations are due to the hard work and selfless efforts of many and will ensure that numerous lives continue to be positively impacted in the communities where we play,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “PGA TOUR fans, tournaments, players, sponsors and volunteers together all helped make this possible.”
