IN THE NEWS

Brian Williams is back in the primetime news anchor seat, co-anchoring coverage of the Iowa caucuses with Rachel Maddow on Monday, February 1 for MSNBC. Hardball host Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd will be stationed in Des Moines.

BET didn’t take kindly to Stacey Dash’s comment on Fox & Friends last week that, “If we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards…where you’re only awarded if you’re black.” Responded BET Networks chairman and CEO Debra L. Lee, “African American contributions to American culture are countless and we cannot and should not wait for anyone to acknowledge them – we have to do it ourselves and we are proud that we can do our part.” But the network had its fun, too, posting music videos over the weekend featuring Dash with hashtags including #WeStillLoveYou, #YoureOneOfUs and #EvenIfYouDontWantToBe.

The CW picked up season three of Mortal Kombat X: Machinima’s Chasing the Cup. The first five episodes of the eSports documentary series will be distributed online at CW Seed, with the finale airing as a one-hour special on Monday, February 15 at 8p.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will present the lifetime achievement award to Carol Burnett at the 22nd Annual SAG Awards, simulcast on TNT and TBS on Saturday, January 30 at 8p. Burnett is the 52 recipient of the honor.

Which will draw more laughs: Tina and Amy’s presentation at the SAG Awards, or Carol Burnett’s acceptance speech? Tell us what you think in the new Cynopsis poll.

Weird Al Yankovic is replacing departing bandleader and co-host Kid Cudi on IFC talk/sketch comedy series Comedy Bang! Bang!. New season launches this spring.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

An event series focused on Watergate is in early development at ABC, reports TheWrap. Entertainment One and Bob Cooper will produce and Jon Maas (The Last Debate) will write the show, partially based on the book The Nixon Defense: What He Knew and When He Knew It, by former White House counsel John Dean.

OWN ordered eight more episodes of docu-series Livin’ Lozada, following reality star Evelyn Lozada (Basketball Wives), and ordered season two of Flex & Shanice, centered on actor Flex Alexander (One on One) and singer Shanice. The premiere season of Lozada was the highest-rated freshman season ever for an OWN docu-series among W25-54, while the second cycle of Flex was up 22 percent in W25-54 versus its first cycle.

Next generation actors in the film include Eden Brolin (daughter of Josh), Greer Grammer (daughter of Kelsey) and Christian Madsen (son of Michael).

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

The ad market ended on a high note, according to Standard Media Index, with total bookings up 9 percent year over year in 4Q15, and robust spending in the scatter (up 28 percent) and upfront (up 6 percent) markets. On the down side: a 4 percent December national ad spend dip YoY for cable. “Tertiary general entertainment networks are having a tough time competing in this golden era of ‘television’ – the definition of which is changing by the day,” Paul Kim, CEO Pivotal Analytics, tells Cynopsis. “In addition, niche networks targeting young demos are also secularly challenged given the intense competition for their entertainment consumption time. This pressure is not going to abate any time soon.” The outlook for 2016: Choppy, predicts Kim. “SMI’s data trends reinforce that the macroeconomic environment is uncertain, as is the changing viewing habits of consumers, which seems to have hit an inflection point.”

TV ad researcher iSpot.tv launched a tool to determine how many people are watching ads in real time across live national/local TV, VOD and OTT platforms. “Brands are becoming more sophisticated in their assessment and optimization of media buys,” said Sean Muller, founder and CEO of iSPot.tv. “Having real-time, holistic measurement for TV ads is at the center of that.”

The IAB on Monday unveiled its Digital Video Advertising Glossary, a compilation of definitions for over 200 video industry terms (addressability, waterfall, content distribution network) deemed potentially confusing. “It is the hope of IAB and its members that this glossary will serve to facilitate better understanding and communication throughout the industry,” said Anna Bager, SVP and GM, mobile and video. Have a quibble with a definition? “New terms will be added and others updated within this living document, ” assured Bager. Glossary is here.

Animal Planet and Lionsgate have partnered to acquire the rights in the U.S., Canada and the UK to documentary film Million Dollar Duck.Animal Planet has TV rights to the film while Lionsgate will distribute it on a limited basis theatrically and on digital home entertainment and packaged media.
