IN THE NEWS

Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday reached an average 30.6 million viewers, down from the 37.7 million who tuned in for President Obama’s 2009 swearing in (an event eclipsed only by the 41.8 million who tuned into see Ronald Reagan take the oath of office in 1981). This year’s inauguration ranked fifth overall among total viewers, after Regan, Obama, Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon. Fox News drew the most viewers, and was the only network to see a rise from 2009. The viewer slip was a switch from the campaign, when self-described “ratings machine” Trump helped drive debates to record highs. Of the 6.6 million viewers across Fox News, CNN and MSNBC for the Inauguration Eve concert, 4.5 million went to FNC.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer drew fire on Saturday for a prepared statement chastising reporters for coverage of attendance at Trump’s inauguration. “This was the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period,” said Spicer, despite data to the contrary. “I’ve run out of adjectives,” tweeted Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd, whose contentious interview with counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway on Sunday (“alternative facts are not facts, they’re falsehoods”) was another indication that tension between the administration and the press hasn’t abated since Trump’s move to the White House.

Sony is considering selling its film and television business, according to a story in the New York Post. The paper reports bankers have been “pushing pitches” to Sony Corp.’s Tokyo office. Word that Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton was leaving for Snapchat parent Snap Inc. came out earlier this month.

The national board of SAG-AFTRA approved a “meaningful package of proposals” for negotiations for a new film and TV contract, reported Gabrielle Carteris. The union president also announced, regarding the strike against certain video game companies, that a rally will be held on February 2.

The percentage of U.S. homes getting live TV channels through antenna has nearly doubled since 2013, to 15 percent of homes in 2016, according to Parks & Associates. Several factors contributed to the decline of pay-TV subs, said Brett Sappington, senior director of research for Park Associates, “including the growth in the OTT video market, increasing costs for pay-TV services and consumer awareness of available online alternatives.” The report noted 63 percent of U.S. broadband households subscribe to at least one OTT service.

Adele will perform at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, airing Sunday, February 12 at 8p on CBS. The singer is a current nominee and 10-time winner.

It was a very good year for Scripps Networks Interactive. What was the company’s biggest success story of 2016? Jon Steinlauf, president of ad sales and marketing, tells Cynopsis, It was an amazing year for all our networks, with Travel Channel ratings up 11 percent, and the best ratings year ever for both DIY Network and Cooking Channel. And what a banner year for HGTV, which ranked 3rd in cable in total adults, its best finish ever. In addition, HGTV’s ad sales exceeded $1 billion, becoming one of the first non-sports cable networks to do so.” And Scripps is off to a great start in 2017, too with finalists in numerous categories in the Cynopsis TV Awards, taking place February 7 in NYC. If you want to be in the room for the celebration, go here.

The Outdoor Sportsman Awards were handed out last week, honoring programming and production talent on Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel. Michael Bane and his show The Best Defense picked up two of the 20 golden moose trophies, in the “Best General Interest” and “Best Sound Design” categories.
