In the most recent Cynopsis Workplace poll, 50% of respondents said they have a good relationship with their manager. That’s a pretty positive result. As for the 30% who said they don’t feel their manager appreciates what they contribute, and 20% who said the relationship is okay, but they wish it was better, Bruce Tulgan, an expert on young people in the workplace and founder of management training and consulting firm Rainmaker Thinking, has some advice.
“Aside from money, the number one factor that makes a company’s employees feel valued is a good, supportive working relationship with their immediate leader, manager, or supervisor,” says Tulgan. Three things managers can do to accomplish this are:
  1. “Provide clear expectations and sufficient resources to set people up for success.”
  2. “Recognize performance, especially exceptional performance over and above expectations.”
  3. “Tie rewards directly to performance and don’t tolerate low performance.”

“Overall, creating an environment where accountability and flexibility go hand in hand is what makes employees feel that their work really matters,” says Tulgan.
