It’s a date: Late Show with Stephen Colbert premieres Tuesday, September 8 at 11:35p, from the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC. Nina Tassler offered scant details at TCA: “We’re sitting back and waiting for him to come to us and say what he has in mind,” said the chairman of CBS Entertainment. Colbert’s take? “I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby,” said the Comedy Central alum. “So, first I should find out how to make a baby.” David Letterman, who announced his intention to retire last April, hosts his final broadcast Wednesday, May 20.
CBS newbies NCIS: New Orleans, Madam Secretary and Scorpion all scored renewals for the 2015-16 season. “These freshman dramas have each made a big impact on key nights of the week,” said Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment. “Creatively distinctive, the series are backed by strong showrunners with amazingly talented casts, and have resonated with a big, broad audience.” NCIS: New Orleans is averaging 18.1 million total viewers, Madam Secretary 14.9 million and Scorpion 14.5 million. All are produced by CBS Television Studios. Fellow freshman Stalker and The McCarthys could still make the cut, said Tassler at TCA.
As for warhorse CSI, now in its 15th season, CBS “hasn’t determined what’s going to happen,” said Tassler. “The show continues to be a strong performer.” Two and a Half Men, however, is wrapping as scheduled after 12 seasons, on Thursday, February 19 at 9p – and may or not feature an appearance by Charlie Sheen, who had a bitter public breakup with the show. All Tassler would say was series creator Chuck Lorre promised to deliver a “mystery sandwich.”
Just hours after her Golden Globes win for Boyhood, Patricia Arquette was focused on her upcoming CBS series, CSI: Cyber, at TCA Monday. “We need to start asking questions like, do we need our phones to be Wifi-enabled? Do our coffeemakers need to be Wifi-enabled? We need to keep ourselves as low-tech as possible to avoid these unnecessary moments,” said Arquette, whose series premieres Wednesday, March 4 at 10p.
CNN reached an agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration that will allow the net to use drones in its newsgathering and reporting. “Unmanned aircraft offer news organizations significant opportunities,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. “We hope this agreement with CNN and the work we are doing with other news organizations and associations will help safely integrate unmanned newsgathering technology and operating procedures into the National Airspace System.”
Original cast member Steven R. McQueen is leaving his role as The Vampire Diaries’ Jeremy. “We felt like it was time for [Jeremy] to go out on his own and start a fresh life – with a twist,” exec producer Julie Plec told the Hollywood Reporter. CW drama airs Thursdays at 8p.
Al Jazeera America is cutting morning news programming, canceling its morning news report and Consider This with Antonio Mora, as well as its 4p news hour. What gives? “We are always looking at our scheduling calendar,” said a net spokesperson. “Increasingly we’re finding that viewers are coming to us for in-depth reporting and analysis of domestic and global news events, and our goal is to offer that around the clock.” Net president Kate O’Brian warned in an April email to staff that “resources will be recalibrated.”
What prompted Friends alum Matthew Perry take another crack at a sitcom? “I’m doing The Odd Couple because my attempt at being a movie star failed,” joked the actor at TCA. His CBS reboot, premiering Thursday, February 19 at 8:30p, puts Perry in front of an audience again, something he didn’t have in his previous series efforts. “It’s really fun,” Perry told reporters. “I hadn’t done that since 2004.”
Veteran So You Think You Can Dance judge Mary Murphy is leaving the Fox competition. “Mary has been a huge part ofSo You Think You Can Dance, from mentoring the dancers as a choreographer to inspiring fans as a judge,” said the network and producers dick clark productions and 19 Entertainment. “She will always be part of our Dance family, and we wish her continued success.”
The Teamsters Local 399 voted to strike the television commercial industry if the Association of Independent Commercial Producers doesn’t pony up. Responded the AICP, “We are disappointed that the members of 399 did not give full consideration to the positive impact that the terms of the mutually agreed to deal would have on the industry …. Furthermore, the mere mention of a strike, ashas been posted on their website, is a detriment to the industry and to the production infrastructure of Los Angeles.” Contract expires January 31….
Did Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hit the mark or go too far as Golden Globes hosts? Vote in our poll at Cynopsis.com.

A new study from Nielsen, “Must See TV: How Twitter Activity Ahead of Fall Season Premieres Could Indicate Success,” analyzed 42 broadcast and cable premieres for four-week periods, and found tweet activity about programs before launch could help predict the size of a show’s eventual audience – info that would help agencies and networks decide where to place their bets. “Our current and recent research efforts increasingly indicate that Twitter TV activity and reach data can help networks and agencies make superior, data-driven advertising and program marketing decisions,” said Nielsen.
CNN All Screen, using both in-home and out-of-home TV viewing data culled from Nielsen samples, got the okay from the Media Ratings Council. “We look forward to using the MRC’s evaluation to implement changes to improve All Screen, and to Nielsen’s efforts to build upon this methodology and create a syndicated service that includes all out-of-home viewership in national television measurement,” said Howard Shimmel, chief research officer of Turner Broadcasting System.
