A White House petition prompted by a Netflix documentary, calling for the pardon of convicts Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, has collected over the 100,000 signatures needed to get a response from the White House. “Based on the evidence in the Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer, the justice system embarrassingly failed both men, completely ruining their lives,” says the petition. The men were convicted of killing photographer Teresa Halbach in 2005. Complication: because the men were convicted of a crime against the state of Wisconsin, not the U.S., only the governor has the power to pardon. And Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker told Fox, “I am not going to override a system that is already put in place.”

First up: deranged spiritual dictator Jim Jones. “We want to focus on the undeniable magnetism of zealots and the danger of that kind of charisma,” said Gyllenhaal, “a notion not only pertinent to cult leaders but to the geo-political climate of today.” Gylenhaal will exec produce with Riva Marker (Beasts of No Nation).
Nat Geo had plenty to share at TCA on Wednesday. The net and Scott Rudin Productions have optioned the rights to upcoming Annie Proulx novel Barkskins, about the taking down of the world’s forest. The deal is part of Rudin’s three-year first-look development and production pact with Fox Networks Group. Also in the works: a documentary event from best-selling author Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm) focused on the war in Syria and Iraq. And Nat Geo signed a development deal with DNA Films & TV (Ex Machina) and FX Productions for its first scripted series, Blood Ivory (wt), a thriller tracing the global web of contraband animals and ivory.
A little sex, a little space. Nat Geo also announced the commissioning, from World of Wonder, of Original Sin: How Sex Changed the World (wt), investigating how the sexual revolution over the past 50 years has impacted society. And the net is teaming with Protozoa Pictures (Black Swan) and Jane Root (America: The Story of Us) and Arif Nurmohamed (How to Build a Planet) and Peter Lovering (The 90s: The Last Great Decade) of Nutopia, for One Strange Rock. Documentary follows incarcerated young people who get a chance to trade prison for a harsh but effective rehabilitation program. “I’m always drawn to stories of redemption and second chances,” EP and 44 Blue president Rasha Drachkovitch (Lockup) tells Cynopsis. “Rock and a Hard Place hits those themes and offers a powerful and uplifting story of corrections in America today.”
It’s all about feel-good TV for UP, with upcoming shows like The McGhee Family (wt) and movies including Love Finds You in Valentine and The Game of Love. What’s the game plan? Amy Winter, net GM and EVP, said at TCA on Tuesday, “At a time when other networks are either walking away from family entertainment or are ‘family networks’ in name only, UP is doubling down and refining what that means.”To inspire real-life positive action, UP will continue to release videos each quarter as part of its pro-social initiative, “Uplift Someone.” The effort has so far generated over 132 million views.

Consumer Technology Assn. chief Gary Shapiro opened this year’s CES with a typically not-subtle call for less government intervention and greater freedom for market innovation. “What we’re up against is old rules that impede innovation,” he said. “Our job at CTA is to defend disruptive industries. We need governments to let the marketplace work.” Shapiro said the consumer technology industry – expected to hit $287 billion in US sales this year will advance innovations drones, self-driving cars and facial recognition only if regulators balance the need for privacy with enterprise stimulation. “There are always those who only see how the bad guys use technology to threaten our privacy. Of course there will always be bad guys, but I believe technology can help us fight back and protect us.”
CES attendees got a sneak peek of the conference at The Tech Futures Suite, hosted by Cynopsis, GK Digital Media, and MyersBizNet. Michael Wolf, founder of NextMarket Insights, told the packed penthouse, “The smart home hub is on its way. Samsung’s SmartThings integration signals a huge strategic investment.” Also look for innovation in the kitchen specifically, featuring everything from robotic mixology to smart meat thermometers. While gesture control was big in the tech space last year, momentum this year has shifted to voice control. The other big buzz centered around Augmented and Virtual Reality. Noted NextVR Executive Chairman Brad Allen, “Mobile VR will be massive.” The Coca-Cola company, acknowledged Ariff Quli, Blippar’s North American Chief Commercial Officer, is a brand that really gets the capabilities of VR. “We had a Coke can turn into a jukebox, with a daily playlist.” Still, said Mike Bloxham of Frank R. Magid Associates, “We have not had that aha moment, where everyone says, “’That’s how it should be done.’” Audience members included execs from Showtime, Nielsen, Hulu and Pizza Hut.
Aside from turning on its service in an additional 130 countries, including India, Nigeria, Russia, South Korea and Vietnam during its CES keynote, Netflix execs Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos pulled back the curtain with first looks at two new 2016 dramas: Queen Elizabeth II saga The Crown reunites Peter Morgan (The Queen) with director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) and Andy Harries (The Queen). Series stars Claire Foy as QEII, Matt Smith, John Lithgow and Victoria Hamilton. Baz Lurhmann’s The Get Down fuses hip-hop, disco and punk as the backdrop to a coming of age story set in NY. Declaring that “the technology is here. It’s the business models that stand in the way. That’s the reason we decided to do original programming,” Sarandos said customers can expect 600-plus hours of original programming this year. “We love stories of all sorts – highbrow, lowbrow, funny. We have that luxury to explore them thanks to the Internet,” he said. “We can commit to publishing books rather than chapters.” Fast fact from Hastings: During Q415, people watched 12 billion hours of Netflix, up from 8.25 billion in 4Q14.
Dish announced the Hopper 3, a TV receiver that can record 16 shows at once with room to store 500 hours of high-definition video, as well as portable HopperGo, a battery-powered device that can hold 100 hours of programming. Also on the menu: Sling TV’s rollout of a new interface, MyTV, that predicts what programming would appeal to a viewer based on past viewing.
Scripps loves its millennials. Chris McCown, VP, video product management, Scripps Networks Interactive, said at CES the company’s recent launch of the millennials-focused Scripps Lifestyle Studios sprouted largely from the success of its Food Network content partnership with Snapchat. “Millennials are a huge focus for us,” he said. “The crossover is already happening. Bobby Flay and his daughter did a piece on Snapchat Discovery Channel, and Alton Brown did a takeover of the channel for a day.”
Nat Geo’s upcoming Story of God, starring Morgan Freeman addressing religion around the world, will debut with complementary digital programming aimed at both pushing viewers to living room viewing and serving as stand-alone content. The digital sidebar features “a bunch of people in a bar-like setting talking about concepts and that’s something you can watch on the small screen,” said Brad Dancer, EVP, research & programming planning. “You don’t have to watch the actual show and can still get a good sense of it.”
Sober Up: In case there was anyone still wearing rose-colored glasses about financial margins in today’s digital market, Laura Martin, managing director at Needham & Co., offered some sobering numbers. Speaking about her client WWE, Martin noted the programmer to date has drawn 7 billion digital views, the majority of it shortform content on YouTube, and for the last year has earned $7 million from digital. “There’s no money in digital,” she said. “Unless you have the powerful economic machine of television, you’re losing money today.”
Trade group The Television Bureau of Advertising issued programmatic TV guidelines to “supplement and improve compliance with initiatives within the various industry forums and committees.” Goals include positioning broadcast TV to better compete in a landscape increasingly based on data, maintaining transparency in the marketplace and encouraging the accessibility of appropriate data for buyers and sellers. The effort, in partnership with a Pearl TV-led task force, is “open to input.”

Atlanta-based SunTrust Bank will run its first Super Bowl spot next month. And it’ll cost a pretty penny – CBS is fetching upwards of $5 million for a 30-second spot for the February 7 game.

R&B group Boyz II Men will play Teen Angel on Grease: Live. Fox event airs Sunday, January 31 at 7p.
Canada’s Corus Entertainment secured international broadcast deals for unscripted lifestyle series Buying the View and Masters of Flip. View has been sold to Digicast RCS MediaGroup‘s Dove Channel, while Flip has been picked up by Nine Entertainment Co. for digital multichannel 9Life in Australia.
