IN THE NEWS

Tucker Carlson will take over the Fox News timeslot left open as Megyn Kelly decamps for NBC. With Tucker Carlson Tonight’s move to 9p, Martha MacAllum lands in the 7p slot covering Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office. MacAllum will also anchor the cable news net’s Inauguration Day coverage on January 20 alongside Bret Baier. Carlson’s show just launched in November after Greta Van Susteren’s exit, finishing in December as the number 2 cable news program among A25-54.

Meanwhile, Van Susteren has joined MSNBC, taking over the 6p timeslot. For the Record with Greta will air weeknights beginning Monday, January 9, in place of With All Due Respect, canceled last month. “The network is the right destination for the smart news and analysis I hope to deliver every day,” said Van Susteren of her new cable news home.

Back to Fox News: monthly Watter’s World specials, hosted by Jesse Watters, will go weekly starting Saturday, January 7. The hour-long programs are extensions of Watters’ interview segments on The O’Reilly Factor.

LAST CALL! Ticket prices increase tonight (after midnight) for our Ratings Master Class on Wednesday, January 25 in NYC. Get the latest intel and insights on TV measurement from experts from Nielsen, Turner, Freeform, McBeard, CIMM, Samba TV, Animal Planet, Media Rating Council, Deep Root Analytics and more – agenda and registration is here.

Disney canceled Girl Meets World, sequel to 1993-2000 series Boy Meets World, after three seasons. Series finale airs tonight at 6p. Yesterday, the coming-of-age show was nominated for a PGA Award for Outstanding Children’s Program.

ESPN anchor Chris Berman, with the sports net since 1979, will have a greatly reduced role after his contract expires. Berman will no longer host Sunday NFL Countdown, NFL PrimeTime or Monday Night Countdown, but will make appearances in a different capacity. “The whole experience has been a dream come true,” said Berman. “When we started in 1979, I was just 24. Nobody knew if ESPN would make it, or, for that matter, if cable TV would make it.”

Is TBS’s Conan is moving from a daily format to a weekly? That’s what Turner CEO John Martin told TheWrap at CES. The Conan O’Brien starrer averaged 638,000 total viewers in Live+3 in 4Q16, with ratings bumps for shows done on location.

Travel Channel event,“The Trip: 2017,” features a $100,000 adventure giveaway of trips to Miami and Palm Beach, FL and Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The online sweepstakes runs from through March 24, complemented by a one-hour special premiering Tuesday, February 21 at 8p featuring the beach locales. Sponsors for 2017 include presenting sponsor National Mortgage Lender Quicken Loans and destination sponsor Secrets Resorts & Spas. ’The Trip: 2017’ is a beach lover’s dream come true,” Courtney White, SVP, programming and development, tells Cynopsis. “And hopefully all the water-themed ‘Dive In’ programming airing this month will inspire our fans to enter this sweepstakes. As the temperature outside dips, we’re all fantasizing about a tropical escape!”

Tupelo-Honey Raycom and WebStream Sports are combining resources, and will henceforth to be known as Tupelo Raycom. Tupelo-Honey Founder Cary Glotzer will serve as CEO of Tupelo Raycom with WebStream Founder John Servizzi and Greg Weitekamp acting as executive vice presidents. “From the moment Raycom Media acquired WebStream fifteen months ago,it was clear that bringing these two groups together made tremendous sense,” said Glotzer. “The sports and entertainment markets have embraced their efficient production model and blending our talented staffs and resources allows us to deliver quality production at every level.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The CW ordered a script for a reboot of Charmed, the Aaron Spelling series that aired on The WB from 1998-2006, from Jane the Virgin creator/exec producer Jennie Snyder Urman, EP Ben Silverman, writers/co-EPs Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, Brad Silberling and CBS Television Studios.

truTV picked up a third season of its first scripted series, Those Who Can’t. The 13-episode season is slated for late 2017.

Fuse greenlit season 3 of Fluffy Breaks Even, renamed Fluffy’s Food Adventures, and is adding three shortform companion series for its digital and social platforms. “Fluffy cannot be contained on one screen,” explained Fluffy’s Gabriel Iglesias

A special episode of Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins ventures into the Hundred Acre Wood on Wednesday, January 18 at 7:30p  National Winnie the Pooh Day. “Christopher Robin is the original human famous for talking to his stuffed animals and toys,” said creator and executive producer Chris Nee. “This episode is an homage to the original Disney animation and storytelling styles.”

Should Bernie Sanders be the next Celebrity Apprentice boss (our idea, not NBC’s)? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/

Speaking of bosses, the real thing is coming to AXS TV. The net is premiering 2003 concert film Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Live in Barcelona on Sunday, January 15 at 8p. The event was the first time a complete Springsteen show was given and official video release, and the broadcast will be the concert’s first in HD.

Fuse.tv series Sole Searching makes its TV broadcast debut on Thursday, January 12 at 11p on FM. The multi-platform net will offer sneaker fans a look at musicians and their kicks collaborations.

Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw narrates Discovery feature doc Rancher, Farmer Fisherman, premiering at the Sundance Film Festival and airing on the network in 3Q17. Film tells the story of conservation heroes who cross political and other divides to protect land and sea.

Telemundo and NBC UNIVERSO will simulcast The Best FIFA Football Awards on Monday, January 9 at 12:30p. Telemundo Deportes presenters Andres Cantor, Miguel Gurwitz and Ana Jurka will lead the Spanish-language broadcast of the event, which will be hosted by Eva Longoria and Marco Schreyl

ADVERTISING

Turner took the opportunity at CES to introduce a one-stop shop for its sports advertising. Turner Ignite Sports will “deliver enhanced value and solutions directly to brands, mitigating the waste of working across multiple properties and agencies,” said Turner Sports EVP of Sales and Sponsorships Will Funk in a blog post. “We believe in creating powerful, long-term marketing partnerships rather than being confined by transactional relationships that stop and go because a sport’s season, event or show ends.”

AOL unveiled a new initiative at CES, BrandBuilder, aimed at encouraging consumers not to go the ad-blocking route. “Less intrusive ad experiences like Player Up and DataPerks will give viewers the experience they desire, and we anticipate seeing higher engagement numbers as a result,” said Spencer Sloe, VP of advertising product and strategy for AOL Content and Strategy. “If consumers are receiving value from the ads they see, it’s likely that they won’t feel compelled to use ad blockers.” One gambit: the Verizon-owned company will reward consumers for taking an action like taking a survey with more data applied to their Verizon phone bill.

2016 was a big year for media M&A deals. Among media, communications and technology companies, Dentsu topped the list with 37 transactions, according to JEGl, followed by WPP Group (33), Alphabet/Google (18), j2Global (13), Accenture (12) and Salesforce (11). While the number of deals dipped from 2,342 to 2,157, value grew from $152.3 million go $218.9 million.

CASTING

Gerald McRaney (This Is Us) has joined Fox reboot 24: Legacy as a series regular, as the father of a presidential candidate played by Jimmy Smits. Series premieres Sunday, February 5, post-Super Bowl.

Gilmore Girl Alexis Bledsel will recur on upcoming Hulu drama The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the novel by Margaret Atwood and slated to arrive April 26.

Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) guest stars as the love interest of Christy, played by his real-life wife Anna Faris, on CBS’s Mom on Thursday, January 19 at 9p.

DIGITAL DATA

Smithsonian Channel announced yesterday it will become the first U.S. network to offer a dedicated 4K on demand model, with programs refreshed each quarter. The 4K stories and documentaries will be available to Smithsonian Channel service subscribers through their existing MVPDs at no additional charge; the net is working with cable, satellite and telco distributors to finalize launch plans for 2Q17. “With programming genres including air and space, history, nature, wildlife and travel at its finest, our new 4K model is sure to enhance the viewing experience,” said network president Tom Hayden. “Coming off the holiday season, we want to capitalize on the growing number of customers with 4K TVs.”

What will OTT success look like for CBS All Access? CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone told The Hollywood Reporter, “The most successful version would be one that hits 4 million subscribers by 2020, has a healthy amount of usage and supports our overall strategy of being multiplatform.” As for the platform’s acquisition of live NFL games amid recent football ratings fumbles, “It’s unclear whether those are anomalies or not. We’re always concerned about who’s watching our shows, but nobody was in panic mode over them. You did have the election, you did have Tom Brady suspended the first four games. There were a lot of things that could have been coming into play, but we’ve had some of our best-rated games ever the past few weeks.”

Speaking at CES, Chris Ripley, president and CEO of Sinclair Broadcast Group, noted that the ongoing adoption of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 standard, which merges over-the-air and Internet-delivered content in future mobile and home devices, “future-proofs” the broadcast industry. “To prosper and thrive in this new IP world, there is no choice besides ATSC 3.0,” said Ripley. “ATSC 3.0 remains on track to be completed as a finished standard later this spring, with technologies moving through the standardization process as planned,” said ATSC president Mark Richer.

People/Entertainment Weekly Network tapped pop culture guru Lola Ogunnaike to host the streaming network’s weekly EW: The Show. Ogunnaike should feel right at home  she began her journalism career as an intern at Entertainment Weekly.

TV vet and writer Jim McKairnes, fed up with life lived in 140 characters or less, offers tweeted predictions about the media – or “The New Abnoramal” – in the latest Cynsiders.
