Good morning. It’s Thursday January 4, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Olympics opened the books to its set designs for NBC’s primetime, daytime and late night studios for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, which will be housed inside and on the rooftop of the International Broadcast Center in the Taebaek Mountains of PyeongChang, South Korea. Primetime and late night studio coverage will originate from a 3,500 square-foot geodesic dome set, designed to appear carved out of the PyeongChang mountainside and feature a 40-foot by 16-foot LED wall, complemented by 18 55-inch high-definition monitors. The facility will see a main anchor desk, interview areas, a news update desk, and more than 15 different stand up locations for host Mike Tirico. In addition, on the rooftop of the International Broadcast Center, NBC Olympics will have a 1,000 square-foot winter lodge set with windows overlooking the ski jumping venue at Alpensia Ski Resort and the views of the Taebaek Mountains.

ON THE AIR

Speaking of NBC, the network’s coverage of the NFL Playoffs kicks off on Saturday with the Falcons/Rams and a special edition of Football Night in America opening the action at 7:30p. The game will actually mark Al Michaels’ first-ever NFL game assignment in Los Angeles (although he has called six NFL games in Anaheim) and marks NBC’s first NFL telecast in the Los Angeles Coliseum since Dick Enberg and Bob Trumpy called Chiefs-Raiders on Dec. 24, 1994.
 
Meanwhile, ESPN’s coverage plans for the NFL Playoffs will see the network open the 2018 NFL Wild Card Weekend on Saturday at 4:20p with the Titans/Chiefs; The AFC matchup will air on ESPN and be simulcast on ABC. Monday Night Football’s Sean McDonough and Jon Gruden will call the game with reporters Lisa Salters (covering the Chiefs) and Adam Schefter (Titans) from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Meanwhile, the ESPN Deportes team includes Eduardo Varela, Pablo Viruega and reporter John Sutcliffe. Suzy Kolber will host a special Postseason NFL Countdown at 3p with analysts Matt Hasselbeck, Randy Moss Steve Young and Charles Woodson.
 
Professional Bull Riders and CBS Sports announced an expanded, 2018 television schedule for the 2018 PBR 25th Anniversary Tour where CBS and CBS Sports Network will air 52 total premier series telecasts this season. The season opens on Saturday sat noon on CBS with the first PBR 15/15 Bucking Battle from Madison Square Garden in New York City. CBS Sports Network will then televise the Monster Energy Bucking Battle at 10:30p. CBS Sports’ schedule is highlighted by televising all four PBR Majors, including the WinStar World Casino and Resort Iron Cowboy from AT&T Stadium starting Feb. 24, the Last Cowboy Standing in Las Vegas beginning May 4, and the Music City Knockout in Nashville on August 17.
 
ESPN reports that its 2017 viewership in prime time and in total day rose vs. 2016, averaging 2,058,000 viewers in prime time across TV and streaming, marking an uptick of 7% over 2016. The company also reports that its total day viewership rose 1%. In the fourth quarter, ESPN grew its audience 13% in prime to 3,052,000 viewers across TV and streaming. The company also reports that First Take recorded its most-viewed year ever with 449,000 viewers and up 25% over last year.
 
Golf Channel named journalist Jaime Diaz to the network’s editorial staff. Diaz will serve up his editorial coverage across Golf Channel Digital platforms, in addition to making regular appearances on Morning Drive and Golf Central. Diaz also will contribute to Golf Channel’s Golf Central Live From programming.
