IN THE NEWS
The number of scripted original series in 2021 hit a record high 559 in 2021, according to FX Content Research estimates. That’s 13% higher than Covid-impacted 2020, and 5% higher than 2019, but the production shutdown clouds the figures, as some shows planned for 2020 were pushed to 2021. The tally includes broadcast, cable and streaming shows for adults.
“Next Level Chef” scored the post-NFC Championship game timeslot on Fox, Sunday, January 30. Drama “Monarch,” which had been slated to make its grand premiere after the game, has been moved to the 2022-2023 season.
DirecTV is dropping right-wing cable news channel One America News Network, owned by Herring Networks. “Following a routine internal review, we do not plan to enter into a new contract when our current agreement expires,” said a spokesperson for DirecTV, which is OAN’s largest carrier. A source of false claims about the 2020 election and Covid vaccines, the network is being sued for defamation by two election technology companies. DirecTV also plans drop a second channel owned by the Herrings, lifestyle-focused AWE.
The ANA and IAB are among 15 organizations asking the Federal Trade Commission to pass a single, national privacy law. “A growing patchwork of state laws are emerging which threaten innovation and create consumer and business confusion,” said the groups in a letter sent to Congress.
The season six midseason return of The CW’s “Riverdale,” originally scheduled for Sunday, March 6, has been postponed until March 20. The change was made to accommodate the network’s broadcast (with TBS) of the Critics Choice Awards, bumped from January 9 to March 13 due to the Omicron surge.
Peacock renewed YA drama “One of Us Is Lying” for a second season. “The fandom behind the series is incredibly passionate and we can’t wait to deliver more twists and turns that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats,” said Lisa Katz, President Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming.
It’s the last gasp for “The Last Man,” canceled by FX on Hulu in October. While a search for new distribution had been underway, “Sadly, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen,” tweeted showrunner/executive producer Eliza Clark. “It is always incredibly difficult to move a show, and in recent years, it has only gotten harder.”
