|Sunday’s NFL action continued to drive network numbers. FOX Sports reports that the Packers’ win over the Seahawks in the NFC Divisional game delivered 38.039 million viewers across FOX, FOX Deportes and streaming platforms. That, according to FOX Sports, projects to be the most-watched event of the weekend, and took home records as the network’s most-streamed NFL Playoff game ever as well as the most-watched divisional game in Spanish cable history, with an average of 156,0000 viewers on FOX Deportes.
Around the dial, The NFL on CBS’ broadcast of the AFC Divisional Playoff game saw the Chiefs’ comeback rank as the network’s most-watched Sunday AFC Divisional Playoff game broadcast in four years. The Houston-Kansas City game was seen by an average viewership of 35.396 million viewers, up 21% from last year’s 29.344. The game also earned a 20.3/44 average fast national household rating/share, up +19% from last year’s 17.1/38.
The NFL stated that the overall 2020 Divisional round average across the four games hit 33.2 million viewers, up +2% versus last year’s 2019 Divisional round average and ranking as the most-watched Divisional round average in three years.
ESPN is serving up over 100 hours of live TV coverage of the Australian Open, with overall coverage slated for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+ and ESPN3 starting Jan. 19. Daily marathon telecasts from Melbourne, totaling more than 100 hours of television plus 1,400 hours streaming, will culminate with the Women’s and Men’s Championships on February 1 and 2, respectively, both at 3:30a. New for 2020 is coverage of qualifying on ESPN, followed on ESPN+, ESPN2 with daily, marathon, prime-time and overnight telecasts from Melbourne at 7p the first night, thereafter at 9p.
Meanwhile, Tennis Channel will return to the Australian Open from Jan. 19 to Feb. 2, again offering 13 consecutive days of live matches in Melbourne, with more than 30 live hours in all. Including daily encore matches and lead-in shows, the network will provide nearly 150 hours from the year’s first major. Jan. 20 will see the first of 10 days of live, primetime match play, staring at 7p. Tennis Channel has shown all five of the event’s finals – men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles – since its first Australian Open in 2008. Lead-in show Tennis Channel Live at the Australian Open begins Jan. 19, at 6p.
E.J. Johnston teamed with Hockey Hall of Famer, Craig Patrick, to launch 3ICE, a new independent three-on-three professional ice hockey league in North America slated to begin play in June of 2021. The new league inked deals with CBS Sports, TSN and RDS where 3ICE Games will air exclusively in the United States on CBS Sports Network, with the Championship Game airing on CBS. TSN and RDS serve as the official Canadian media partners. The inaugural 3ICE season tour will take place during the summer of 2021. The league will consist of eight teams with each team consisting of seven players (including one goalie) and a head coach. Overall each season will see 60 games per season, culminating in a final league championship game.
GOLF Channel celebrates its 25th anniversary on Friday. when in 1995 it launched as the first single-sport cable network, co-founded by Arnold Palmer and cable entrepreneur Joe Gibbs. Anniversary celebrations this week include special content on Morning Drive while Golf Central will set up The Approach, the first show ever to appear on the network back in 1995.

NFL Network delivers live coverage of three collegiate all-star games this month beginning Saturday, with the East-West Shrine Bowl at 3p and the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at 7p in addition to Jan. 25 with the Reese’s Senior Bowl at 2:30p. For the East-West Shrine Bowl from Tropicana Field, play-by-play announcer Andrew Siciliano is joined in the booth by analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis, while Kimberly Jones provides reports from the sidelines.The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl welcomes play-by-play announcer Rhett Lewis, analysts Bucky Brooks and Marc Ross, with Omar Ruiz providing reports from the sidelines. For the Reese’s Senior Bowl Siciliano is joined in the booth by Jeremiah and Davis, while Brooks provides analysis from the field and Tom Pelissero provides reports from the sidelines.
The National Hockey League and the Buffalo Sabres announced that the NHL Scouting Combine will remain in Buffalo through 2022, with each of the next three events being held at KeyBank Center and LECOM Harborcenter. The NHL Scouting Combine has been held in Buffalo since 2015.
In radio news, Westwood One will present live play-by-play coverage this weekend of NFL Championship Sunday as the AFC and NFC contenders battle it out for a berth at Super Bowl LIV. Sunday at 2p sees Kevin Harlan (play-by-play), Tony Boselli (analyst), and Laura Okmin (sidelines) call the AFC Championship Game, while Kevin Kugler (play-by-play), Kurt Warner (analyst), Ross Tucker (sidelines) handle microphone duties for the NFC Championship game.
SiriusXM announced that PGA TOUR pro Colt Knost signed a new multi-year deal that will increase his role on the SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio channel. Gravy and the Sleeze, which he co-hosts with Drew Stoltz, will expand its schedule from one to three days a week most weeks (Monday-Wednesday). During weeks when there is no tournament play-by-play on SiriusXM, their show will air all five weekdays.

Super Bowl viewers will see a Boston-themed spot from Hyundai with the 60-second comedic ad running in the first quarter of the game and featuring a cast of Boston celebrities including Chris Evans, John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch and David Ortiz. The final ad will make its world premiere during the Super Bowl Greatest Commercials 2020 special on CBS on Jan. 27 from 9-10, which will also include an exclusive behind-the-scenes segment on the making of the spot. “Casting is such a critically important part of the ad, and we found four celebrities who worked perfectly together and made our creative concept come to life brilliantly,” said Angela Zepeda, CMO, Hyundai Motor America. “Combine that talent with our director Bryan Buckley and the team at our ad agency INNOCEAN, and we think we have another winner on our hands. Last night during the College Football Playoff National Championship, ESPN debuted a new spot highlighting some of the upcoming storytelling features that will appear across the enterprise. The spot, with the tagline “The Best Storytelling in Sports,” highlights previously unannounced forthcoming documentaries about Bruce Lee, the Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa home run race, and Lance Armstrong. It also teases a new 30 for 30 Podcast series about Gymnastic coaches Bela and Marta Karolyi and included footage from the previously announced documentary about NBA icon Dwyane Wade, debuting in late February, and scenes from “The Last Dance,” the 10-part project on Michael Jordan and the 1990’s Chicago Bulls slated for June.
Reebok unveiled Zig Kinetica and is slating its biggest shoe drop of 2020 with their partner Conor McGregor ahead of his return to the Octagon. Conor will serve as the face of the Zig campaign as he embarks on his journey to regain the lightweight title. The announcement marks the next phase in Reebok’s “Sport the Unexpected” campaign, celebrating “bold risk takers who reshape culture by being anything but expected.”

The three content creators boast over 21 million subscribers. LazarBeam (12.3M subscribers) has the eighth most viewed channel on YouTube with over 2B views in 2019; Muselk (8.15M subscribers) whose boundless excitement for gaming has driven him to gain 7.8M subscribers over the last two years; and Valkyrae, a key live streamer on the verge of breaking 1M subs on YouTube. Muselk, in coordination with Click Management and LazarBeam, will host a 12 hour charity livestream with the goal to raise $1M AUD for the Australian Bushfire Crisis. Lannan (LazarBeam) is one of the world’s biggest content creators, with over 12 million subscribers.
DreamHack detailed plans for its US West Coast debut via DreamHack Anaheim from Feb. 21-23. Events will include live music concerts in addition to The Dreamies, an awards show slated for Feb. 23. DreamHack will also launch a new charity initiative in 2020, entitled “Pause for a Cause” to impact the local communities in each U.S. city where a DreamHack festival is located. Beginning with DreamHack Anaheim, DreamHack will pick three local communities. Tournaments are set to feature Fortnite, CS:GO, Magic The Gathering Arena, Halo, as well as fighting game, collegiate and high school tournaments.
