NBC’s first airing of the Golden Globes since 2021 delivered 6.3 million total viewers, down from 6.9 million last time around and 18.3 million viewers in 2020. Among A18-49, the telecast had a 1.1 rating, versus 1.5 in 2021. This year’s show aired on a Tuesday night instead of the usual awards show perch of Sunday.

“The Bear,” “Severance” and “Better Call Saul” scored the most WGA Awards nominations. Each show received three nods; winners will be honored at the annual ceremony on March 5.

Fox News correspondent Rick Leventhal was hospitalized following a car accident. The former reporter and husband of Kelly Dodd, former cast member of “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” shared in a video on Instagram that he suffered four broken ribs, a fractured bone in his right foot and “wounded pride.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Class will remain in session for “Abbott Elementary.” The day after it won three Golden Globe awards, it was announced that the hit comedy will have a third season on ABC.

Freeform has renewed “grown-ish” for season six. The series returns for the second half of its fifth season on January 18 at 10:30p.

“Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” aren’t going anywhere, either. Disney has committed to renewing the two most-watched game shows in syndication through the 2027-2028 season.

ABC will bring back three unscripted series and a “Jeopardy!” spinoff. “Claim to Fame,” hosted by Kevin and Frankie Jonas; “Celebrity Family Feud,” hosted by Steve Harvey; and “Press Your Luck,” hosted by Elizabeth Banks, will return for new seasons. The network also ordered the primetime spinoff series “Jeopardy! Masters,” with all-star contestants facing off.

“The Jennifer Hudson Show” was greenlit for season 2. The one-hour daytime program from Warner Bros. Discovery will return to Fox this fall.

“All American” made it to season six on The CW. Season five of the network’s top-ranked linear series among adults 18-49 will debut on January 23.

Fox renewed “Sherri” through 2025. “I launched this show with the mission to give daytime viewers a ‘good time,’ just like my theme song says,” said host Sherri Shepherd..

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“Mayor of Kingstown” season two will premiere on Sunday, January 15. Set in the wake of the Kingstown Prison riot, chaos ensues in the tented city. The Paramount+ series will release new episodes weekly, with two debuting for the premiere.

Freeform’s unscripted dating show “Love Trip: Paris” premieres Tuesday, February 14 at 9p with a two-episode debut, and will then air weekly at 10p.

COMING UP

“General Hospital” will honor the late Sonya Eddy, the actor behind the character Epiphany Johnson, as the soap marks its 60th year on the air. Anniversary programming will begin in late March.

“Schoolhouse Rock! 50th Anniversary Singalong” will premiere on ABC on February 1. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the fifth installment of the franchise special will celebrate animated and educational songs, featuring the Black Eyed Peas, Derek Hough and Shaquille O’Neal.

STREAMING

While streamers are expected to spend over $6 billion on livestream sporting events rights in 2023, according to TMT Predictions from Deloitte Global, Amazon will offer advertisers refunds or alternate ad inventory after audiences for the “Thursday Night Football” 2022 season fell approximately 25% short of preseason viewership estimates. According to Nielsen data, viewership exceeded 10 million more than six times last year, and peak viewership over 15 games averaged 11.3 million, but the overall season average hovered around 9.58 million.

ViX+ reality series “La Loca de los Perros” debuts tonight, January 12. The eight-episode original series hosted by influencer, model, TV personality and “La Loca de los Perros” (“crazy dog lady”) Erika Fernández will follow her workday rescuing dogs through her foundation Amor sin Raza (Love Without Race).

The SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix in 2024. Under a new multi-year partnership, the event will be available on the streamer globally beginning next year. This year’s ceremony will broadcast online on February 26 at 8p, and stream on Netflix’s YouTube channel.

CASTING

Diego Boneta, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Belinda will lead an Amazon Original miniseries. The untitled project inspired by assassinated TV entertainer Paco Stanley will also feature Zuria Vega, El Chá, Bárbara López, Roberto Duarte and Jorge Zárate.

GOING GLOBAL

All3Media International will handle the global distribution rights for “The Kardashians: A Billion Dollar Dynasty.” The independent distributor partnered with Optomen on the two-part docuseries that launched last week, lifting the lid on how the Kardashian family made its fortune – “From Kim’s sex tape all the way to the White House,” according to Optomen CEO Nick Hornby.

Three BBC news anchors quit ahead of a reorg. As the network plans to integrate its international and domestic news channels, combining the UK 24-hour news service with BBC World News, David Eades, Joanna Gosling and Tim Willcox announced their departures after decades at the corporation.

Portugal’s TVI acquired the format rights to “Let’s Make a Deal.” The program will broadcast daily, with a launch date to be announced soon.

RATINGS

Hallmark Channel was the most-watched entertainment cable network of 2022. Thanks to its holiday stunt “Countdown to Christmas,” which rose to the top in the fourth quarter, the network marked its ninth consecutive year as number one on the charts.

“The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” had its largest audience in over two years, courtesy of a guest appearance by Prince Harry. Tuesday night’s episode with the Duke of Sussex averaged 3.15 million total viewers, the most on a weeknight since former President Barack Obama sat opposite Colbert in November 2020, according to Nielsen.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Noah Oppenheim will depart from his role as NBC News president to take a production deal with NBCUniversal. The network also hired Rebecca Blumenstein, New York Times deputy managing editor, as president of editorial. Blumenstein will oversee editorial, news gathering, bureaus, field operations, booking, “Meet the Press,” “Dateline” and NBC News Studios. Libby Leist and Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News executives, were also elevated into new roles.

CBS Studios’ Meg Liberman will retire after 47 years in casting. The Emmy-winning EVP and head of casting who oversaw “The Good Wife,” “Jane the Virgin,” “NCIS” and more announced her retirement “to embark on [her] next adventure,” according to Liberman’s farewell note to staff. Deborah Aquila, head of casting for PTVS, will serve as head of casting for both CBS Studios and Paramount TV Studios, and will take on responsibilities previously held by Liberman.

Mark G. Parker replaced Susan Arnold as chairman on the Disney Board. The succession reduces the Board size to 11 members, as Parker, director and executive chairman of Nike, takes a seat. Nelson Peltz was also nominated to the board by investor Trian Group, though Disney said in a statement, “The Board does not endorse the Trian Group nominee, and recommends that shareholders not support its nominee, and instead vote FOR all the Company’s nominees.”

NBCUniversal’s Will Gonzalez, EVP and chief data office, has been handed oversight of the company’s newly-created Television & Streaming unit, merging research and decision sciences teams.

LA-based production company Apploff Entertainment promoted Danielle Peress to VP of current and development. Peress will report to President and CEO Jeff Apploff.

Actor Ben Masters has died at 75. The “Passions” star died Wednesday after a battle with dementia and a recent bout of Covid. Masters is survived by his sister and nieces.
