IN THE NEWS

Al Roker made a heartfelt return to NBC’s “Today.” After being hospitalized in November for multiple blood clots and later suffering complications related to internal bleeding, the weather anchor accompanied Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie – and a “weepy” crew, according to Kotb – onto set at the top of Friday’s show. “I went in for one operation, and I got four free,” said Roker. “My heart is just bursting. I’m just so thrilled to see all of you and all of the crew. Right now, I’m running on adrenaline.”

AMC cancellations continue. The comedy sci-fi series “Demascus” from Tearrance Arvelle Chilsholm and Mark Johnson was the latest show cut due to the network’s programming write-down, joining “Moonhaven,” “Invitation to a Bonfire” and more. “Demascus” showrunner Kirk A. Moore tweeted, “Welcome to the business. This sucks. But it’s happening EVERYWHERE.”

Suzanne Malveaux will exit CNN after two decades. In a note to staffers, the anchor and correspondent wrote that she “made the heartfelt decision to put myself and my family first and to pursue my long-desired professional passions: using storytelling to promote wellness, resiliency and social justice.”

Jen Shah of “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” was sentenced to prison. In season 2 of the series, the FBI arrived on set, prompting Shah to flee before getting arrested for a telemarketing fraud scheme. The Bravo star was sentenced to 6.5 years, with an additional 5 years of supervised release.

Dolly Parton honored Leslie Jordan in a “Call Me Kat” surprise guest appearance. The country music star gave a pre-recorded, direct message to Jordan before playing a memorial montage of his series appearances. The episode also revealed the fate of Jordan’s character, Phil: he moves to Tahiti.

Cox Media Group struck a deal with Charter Spectrum TV. Under the carriage agreement, CMG stations will remain on Spectrum’s lineup.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

An “8 Mile” TV adaptation is in the works. Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson will develop a series based on the 2002 film about Eminem’s life, in collaboration with the rapper. Jackson is also expanding the “BMF” universe – at the premiere of the show’s second season on January 5, Jackson announced three new spinoffs that will add to “BMF Immortal.”

“Wednesday” was renewed for a second season. Netflix greenlit the Tim Burton hit starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams. The series broke viewership records and quickly became the second most-viewed series on the streamer ever, ranking only behind “Stranger Things” season four.

What you’ve seen of Colin Farrell as The Penguin is only “the tip of the iceberg.” The Irish actor will continue in the role in an upcoming “The Batman” spinoff series on HBO Max. Farrell said, “The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to.” Filming for the series will begin in February.

“Fire Country” will have a second season on CBS. Averaging 8 million viewers per episode and live +35-day multiplatform viewing, the drama series was the top new broadcast series of the season, with a combined 10 million viewers across linear and streaming.

ABC has a workplace comedy in the works. From Claudia Lonow, the creator behind ABC “How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life),” “Boss” will be a single-camera sitcom inspired by Lonow’s real-life experiences.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 15 episodes were cut to 60 minutes. Previously 90 minutes from Season 10 to Season 14, upcoming episodes of the MTV reality competition series will be shortened following its “supersized” two-episode premiere.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“That ‘90s Show” will debut on January 19. Jumping decades, the Formans will return to the screen when Eric and Donna’s daughter, Leia, visits her grandparents in the summer of 1995. Netflix teased, “Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll never dies, it just changes clothes.”

COMING UP

Aubrey Plaza will host “SNL” on January 21. With Sam Smith as the musical guest, it will be the “Parks and Recreation” and “The White Lotus” star’s first time hosting the late-night sketch comedy show. Michael B. Jordan is up next, with Lil Baby as the musical guest, on January 28.

“The Resident” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” were pushed back a week in a series of Fox scheduling changes. Fans will have to wait another week to find out what happens in the series’ finale and premiere, with the chance that “The Resident” finale could be its last. The two-part episode will be split into two weeks, on January 10 and January 17, and “9-1-1: Lone Star” will premiere on January 17.

STREAMING

HBO Max teen series “Generation” is now on Tubi. After being cut by the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer in August of 2022 following their merger with discovery+, all 16 episodes of the first season will now be available on Tubi beginning February 1.

SPORTS

Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football” dropped 41% for the season. Averaging 9.6 million viewers, the streamer’s first season since acquiring the exclusive rights was the lowest viewer performance since the NFL started selling the rights in 2014. Despite the drop from an average of 16.2 million viewers in 2021 when shared by Fox, the NFL, Amazon and local broadcasters, and 14 million viewers in 2020, there was a silver lining: the median age for the ticket viewer was 47 this season, seven years younger than that of the rest of the NFL’s TV rights packages.

Damar Hamlin continues to improve. The 24-year-old Buffalo Bills player is now breathing on his own and “his neurologic function remains intact and he has been able to talk to his family and care team,” according to a statement by the Bills on Twitter. In a FaceTime with the team, Hamlin told them, “Love you boys.” Hamlin has since posted on Instagram to say, “When you put love out into the world it comes back to you 3x’s as much.”

Al Iraqiya will broadcast Iraq’s Arab Gulf Cup. For the first time since 1979, eight national teams will compete in Basra, Iraq, in the 25th edition of the competition.

Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League partnered with tech company LiveLike. The partnership aimed at the digital experience will allow fans to connect on matchday and interact with their favorite clubs, offering brand sponsors an interactive opportunity.
