The NFL postseason continued the regular season’s gains, led by “The NFL on CBS” on Saturday, which saw the Titans’ upset of the Patriots rank as with the most-watched AFC Wild Card game in primetime in nine years. The matchup was seen by an average of 31.418 million viewers, for a rise of 23% over last year’s Chargers/Ravens game and up 7% over last year’s equitable matchup in primetime.

PROGRAMMING

ESPN/ABC also surged with the OT contest between the Bills and Texans, reporting an average of 26,409,000 viewers across ABC, ESPN and ESPN Deportes, according to Nielsen. That marks a rise of 14% over last year and tanks as the most-viewed Saturday afternoon NFL Wild Card game since 2014 and the most-viewed NFL Wild Card Game ever on ESPN and ABC.

Speaking of ESPN, the network is touting that in 2019, fourth quarter and in December, the network maintained its leadership position among cable networks in the young male audience carrying cable’s biggest 10 audiences and 13 of the top 14 in 2019. In Total Day, ESPN ranked as the top full-time cable network among Men and Adults 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54. For the month of December, ESPN was up 1% among total viewers, and up 5% in prime time.

Around the dial, NBC Sports will broadcast and stream more than 400 hours of coverage in the United States from the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, IMSA Prototype Challenge, Porsche GT3 Cup USA by Yokohama and Lamborghini Super Trofeo during the IMSA season, highlighted by 59 hours of the WeatherTech Championship on NBC, NBCSN and CNBC which features nine hours of coverage on the NBC network beginning Jan. 25, at 1:30p with the first hour of the 58th Rolex 24 At Daytona, followed by a two-hour live telecast of the race finish on Jan. 26 at noon on NBC. The 2020 season also marks the debut of TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold which will be the exclusive streaming home to all IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and IMSA Prototype Challenge races.

The 2021 NHL Winter Classic will be hosted by the Minnesota Wild at Target Field, the home stadium of the MLB’s Twins next year. Minnesota’s opponent for the next New Year’s Day game will be determined later. The event will mark the first Winter Classic for the Wild, and their second outdoor game.

The NHL also selected the head coaches for the Jan. 25 All-Star Game at St. Louis, with Todd Reirden of the Washington Capitals, Bruce Cassidy of the Boston Bruins, Craig Berube of the Blues and Gerard Gallant of the Vegas Golden Knights getting selected due to their points percentage in their respective divisions.

ISM Raceway is changing its name back to Phoenix Raceway, which will host the season finales for Cup, Xfinity and the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series in November. The venue had been known as ISM Raceway since 2018, but ISM Connect opted to change course two years into the deal. “Phoenix Raceway and ISM Connect have mutually agreed to restructure their relationship and will discontinue its naming rights partnership. We look forward to transitioning back to Phoenix Raceway, a brand that has built a strong affinity across the racing community since our opening in 1964,” read a statement on the matter.

The NFL detailed plans for the final #NFL100 Experiences of a Lifetime contest, opening the door for one lucky fan to become part of the action and– as a first-ever prize in Super Bowl history– have the opportunity to start the post-game celebration by launching the confetti cannon at the end of the game. The winner and a guest will also receive VIP access to the 9th Annual NFL Honors on Feb. 1 at the Adriene Arsht Center.

Lucas Oil Products will continue its partnership with the Professional Bull Riders for the 2020 season, starting with the Unleash the Beast Tour. The multi-year extension guarantees Lucas Oil will remain the “exclusive motor oil/additive and lubricant car care products manufacturer” of the PBR for the 10th year.

Speaking of which, PBR is forecasting a 25% bump in sponsorship revenue this season, according to Bloomberg, including deals with new partners that include Union Home Mortgage Corp., K&N Air Filters, the all-terrain vehicle company Can-Am and the Palladium Hotel Group.

DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

Amid the CES fanfare this week, hundreds of attendees will be heading to the VSiN Sports Betting Summit Presented by SeventySix Capital on Wednesday starting a noon at VSiN Studio at South Point Hotel Casino & Spa. The summit will feature panels of industry-leading sports betting, media and advertising executives discussing the landscape of sports betting in broadcasting including monetization, advertising, subscriptions, regionalization, and data analytics. Lenovo is bringing Legion to the new Apex Legends Global Series, announcing a deal with Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment for Lenovo Legion as to become the exclusive PC and monitor for the esports program. The deal will see Lenovo provide more than 200 high-performance Lenovo Legion desktops and monitors for all Apex Legends Global Series Majors this year. In addition, Lenovo will also be providing Lenovo Legion laptops for the caster’s desks to spectate and commentate on the live performance. The exclusive partnership will kick off at the first Apex Legends Global Series Major on March 13-15 in Arlington.

PUBG Mobile unveiled plans for the PUBG Mobile Club Open Spring Split to kick off the 2020 season, which offers a prize pool of $1 million divided across the Spring and Fall. The PMCO will lead to the first PUBG Mobile World Championship 2020 later this year with contenders from a bevy of new regions this year.

More talent changes for Overwatch League’s third season, with Brennon “Bren” Hook and Josh “Sideshow” Wilkinson shifting from the desk and into casting during the 2020 season. The pair spent the first two seasons on the analysis desk, providing in-depth coverage before, during, and after matches.

Esports merchandising company We Are Nations entered a long-term, global licensing agreement with Ultimate Media Ventures, per Esports Insider. The deal, which also includes a marketing partnership, will see We Are Nations license the ULT brand and IP to build its presence in North America, Europe, and further regions while Ultimate Media Ventures will also become We Are Nations’ marketing agency of record, working on ULT and other projects that the company has undertaken.
