Cynopsis

07/05/06

Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, July 5, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC Sports and the Arena Football League (AFL) have parted ways amicably as both organizations did not reach an agreement to extend their broadcasting contract. The AFL will begin immediate talks with other entities to find a new broadcasting home.

Tonight’s Premiere:
CBS:    Rock Star at 8p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Donald Trump is getting fully into the television business with the news that he is launching his own LA-based production company – name not yet finalized.  According to Variety, the prod house will be headed by former Apprentice competitor Andy Litinsky who has been biding his Trump time in the real estate development business these last couple of years.  First project to come out of the new shingle is likely to be the Monopoly-based show being developed by RJ Cutler and Trump.

A couple of programming notes from ABC:  The fall Tuesday 9p series has been retitled from Let’s Rob…. to Knights of Prosperity.  And as of Wednesday, July 26, ABC will add a second edition of Primetime to the primetime schedule, this one dubbed Primetime: Medical Mysteries, and running for at least five weeks.

TV One will air a premiere episode of Living It Up With Patti LaBelle on July 16 at 1030p, airing regularly thereafter on Saturdays at 11a and Sundays at 230p.  The episode will take a behind-the-scenes look of a historic reunion of the 1970s girl group Labelle, the trio of Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx. Leading up to the premiere, TV One will air a classic episode of It’s Showtime at the Apollo with Patti LaBelle, Kashif and host Sinbad as well as a mini-marathon of season two episodes of the Patti show.

Who do you think should be the fifth chatter on ABC’s The View replacing Star Jones?  The majority of your votes went to – in rank order – Gayle King, Kathie Griffin, Aisha Tyler and Connie Chung.  And on the guy side – two possibilities came up more than a few times – Tony Danza, Mario Cantone and Harvey Fierstein.

In other news – Murray Janofsky, better known to audiences as comedian and game show host Jan Murray, passed away on Sunday at the age of 89.  Murray’s television career began in the early 1950s as a game show host on Sing it Again, Treasure Hunt and Jan Murray Time, among others. He made numerous guest appearances on shows including Dr. Kildare, TheMan from U.N.C.L.E., all the way up to more recent shows such as It’s a Living and My Two Dads in 1989, and as a popular participant in celebrity hosts.  He is survived by his wife Toni, their son Warren and two daughters Diane and Celia.

And an update on Roger Ebert who was taken in for emergency surgery on Saturday evening.  He is in critical condition but stable, and according to his wife, the doctors say he is responding well.  Ebert had undergone surgery in mid-June to remove a non-life threatening cancerous growth. It was a complication from that surgery which required emergency attention this past weekend.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

Morgan Fairchild will join the cast of MyNetworkTV’s drama series Fashion House opposite Bo Derek. The series, about corruption and greed in the fashion industry, will debut on the new primetime general entertainment network September 5 at 9p. Fairchild’s character is the long-time enemy of Derek’s character, and the two plot revenge on each other at every turn.

CBS has ordered up a pilot with executive producer Ben Stiller and starring Stiller’s wife Christine Taylor. Stiller will also appear from time to time on the show in a recurring role. The show will be based on Taylor’s life as a small town girl who made it big in Hollywood.

NBC has also just given the go-ahead for a new pilot from Dan Fogelman, writer of the feature film Cars. Per Hollywood Reporter, the comedy is called Lipshitz Saves the World about a teenage guy named Adam Lipshitz, who may not be the coolest guy in school, but he feels he is destined to save the world.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Mitch Feinman has been upped to SVP/Fox Mobile Entertainment, where he will identify and create new distribution channels for the company’s content worldwide. Since the company’s inception in January 2005, Mitch, in his previous position as VP/Digital Content, was responsible for coining the term Mobisode – short episodes created exclusively for mobile phones – and produced a series of them surrounding the show 24. Mitch reports directly to Lucy Hood, President/Fox Mobile Entertainment.
