CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

05/04/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 4, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

“This is a truly bold step forward in the struggle to help more than 35 million American young people live healthier lives.”  So said President Clinton yesterday in announcing that the three biggest carbonated beverage companies in the US will alter what beverages they supply to school vending machines and cafeterias nationwide.  The initiative was crafted by The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative of the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association, and Cadbury Schweppes, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and the American Beverage Association, and established a new set of guidelines that limit portion sizes and a reducing the number of calories available to kids during the school day.  Under the agreement, the beverage industry will spread the new guidelines to 75% of schools prior to the start of the 2008-2009 school year, with plans to have full implementation by the start of the 2009-2010 school year.  These new guidelines include not just the traditional school day but also apply to after-school programs (e.g. clubs, yearbook, band/choir, student government, and drama etc.).

According to the new guidelines, which reportedly will also apply to private and parochial schools are as follows:

  • Elementary schools will only sell water, and 8 oz., calorie-capped servings of certain juices with no added sweeteners and servings of fat free and low fat regular and flavored milks.
  • Middle schools will follow the same plan as elementary schools with portion sizes increased slightly to 10 oz.
  • High schools will sell the same line-up as the lower/middle schools as well as no calorie and low calorie drinks, such as bottled water, diet and unsweetened teas, diet sodas, fitness water, low calorie sports drinks, flavored water, and seltzers; and 12 oz. containers of light juices and sports drinks.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The off again on again live action movie version of Hannah Barbera’s classic cartoon, The Jetsons, is on again according to Variety.  Warner Bros. has tapped Adam F. Goldberg (Fanboys) to pen the script for the movie, and Donald De Line (The Italian Job) to produce.

PBS Kids Sprout has picked up a second season of The Good Night Show, the nightly (6-9p) programming block featuring original wrap around segments.  The new segments of The Good Night Show block debut this July 2006, the host Melanie will introduce Star, a new sidekick and extended craft segments, yoga for kids, Spanish and sign language.

Tokyopop will launch Pop Fiction a new line of serialized young adult novels in the US this fall 2006.  Pop Fiction aims to bring popular stories from different cultures and genres from around the world that as Tokyopop Publisher Mike Kiley puts it stories, “…embody the messiness off life.”  The first titles to be published under Pop Fiction banner this October 2006 include:

  • Magic Moon, the bestselling fantasy story from the noted German husband and wife team Wolfgang and Heike Hohlbein, author and illustrator respectively, which has sold 2 million copies globally and been translated into 20 languages.  Magic Moon follows the adventures of a young man in a mysterious world where he battles monsters and fantastical beings in his effort to unravel the secret that keeps his sister trapped in a coma.  The series is slated to include three volumes.
  • Scrapped Princess, written by Ichiro Sakaki and based on the anime series Scrapped Princess: A Tale of Destiny is a thirteen volume series about of a young girl princess.  Upon her birth it was prophesized that she would trigger the end of the world if she lived until her 16th birthday.
  • Kino no Tabi: Book One of The Beautiful World, a Japanese bestseller, from Keiichi Sigsawa.  The eight volume series follows the adventures of Kino a girl who sets out to explore the world on her talking motorcycle remaining in each country for just three days at time.
  • Witches’ Forest: The Adventures of Duan Surk  the story is based on a popular Fortune Quest property that includes comics, videogames, role-playing-games, and a TV series.  This four volume series from Mishio Fukazawa is the story of a 16yr-old amateur fighter who winds up lost in the Witches’ Forest where he meets two other adventurers, and together they embark on a quest.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has changed the initial rating given to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, from T (Teen 13+) to M (Mature 17+).  The ESRB explained the content responsible for the change in rating, “…involves more detailed depictions of blood and gore than were considered in the original rating, as well as the presence of a locked-out art file or “skin” that if accessed through a modification in the PC version of the game, allows the user to play with topless versions of female characters.

According to a new survey conducted by Sperling’s BestPlaces, Seattle is the top video gaming city in the US.  The report is based on the number of video game systems owned per household, the number of games purchased, rented and frequency of online game-play, among other factors.  The top 15 US gaming cities are:  Seattle, Minneapolis-St. Paul,  Atlanta,  Detroit, Phoenix, Washington DC, St. Louis, Boston, San Diego, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, and New York.

Buena Vista International (BVI), is making its way into Vietnam, beginning by distributing Pixar/Disney’s new movie Cars through MegaStar Joint Venture Company Limited.  MegaStar is a joint venture between Envoy Media Partners headed by Ted Shugrue and Phuong Nam Corporation.  MegaStar has offices in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and will be run in Vietnam by Lim Eng Hee and overseen by Tony Manne, who is based in the US.  MegaStar, which opens an eight-screen multiplex in Vietnam, will also distribute Disney and Touchstone movies there including Eight Below, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 2 — Dead Man’s Chest.  Additionally, as part of its expansion into the region Disney has inked a licensing agreement with Eastern Media Holdings to sell toys, consumer products and apparel in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has signed a deal with Eidos Interactive for the North American and European distribution of Justice League Heroes, the new video game based on the DC Comics’ team of super heroes, which will be released this fall 2006.  Eidos will handle marketing the game in Europe, while Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will oversee marketing in North America.  Justice League Heroes is developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Activision Inc. has obtained the rights to develop and publish interactive games based on the James Bond license through 2014, from MGM Interactive and EON Productions Ltd.  Under the deal Activision has the worldwide rights to create video games for all current and next generation consoles, PC and hand-held platforms, which includes games based on the Bond movies as well as non-movie based games.  Activision takes over from Electronic Arts that previously developed and published games based on the Bond franchise.

Alliance Atlantis has inked licensing deals for its preschool animated property, Lunar Jim in Canada with Adorable Kids Inc. and Calego International.  Under the deals Adorable Kids Inc. will develop sleepwear and underwear and Calego International will develop a line of bags, backpacks and other accessories all based on Lunar Jim.  Fisher Price holds the master toy license for Lunar Jim and plans to launch the first line of products in Canada this fall 2006.  The series is co-produced by The Halifax Film Company and Alliance Atlantis.

Fisher-Price, Inc., will release its new electronics products Kid-Tough FP3 Player and Kid-Tough Digital Camera this summer.  Designed specifically for preschoolers, both the Kid-Tough FP3 Player and Digital Camera products are real working electronics.  While the FP3 player comes preloaded with age appropriate songs and stories, additional content can be added by uploading music onto the player, or by using the Fisher-Price Song & Story Online Store where adults can buy songs and stories.  Protected within a rubberized shell, the digital camera features includes a color screen for previewing pictures, 640 x 480 resolution, 8 MB of memory, SD card slot for additional storage, as well as dual handle grips, two-eye viewing and an auto flash.
